It should be easy but why isn't it?

I'm 5'6 and currently weigh 12st7.
This is the most I have ever weighed except whilst pg. I have DC of 4yo and 18mo and am really struggling to lose weight.

I keep beating myself up and feeling bad as I know it's as simple as eat less, move more and is entirely within my control but I still struggle. I tried to lose weight a year ago by changing some basic habits and I got down to 11st5 but since being back at work (v sedentary and lots of meetings in Costa Hmm ) I've just put it all back on.

Things I struggle with are:

  • exercise as I just don't know where people find time with ft job and 2DC
  • DH is even more overweight and doesn't seem bothered
  • I have an under active thyroid and should take 150mcg thyroxine a day but often forget.
  • I've tried changing habits like I did last year but the weight is just not shifting
  • no time for breakfast before leaving the house at 7.30am and getting DC ready

Surely if it was important to me as it feels, I'd have broken through these barriers by now?

Can anyone help?

You can do it!

BIWI · 28/01/2014 13:55

The thing is, this is about you. Surely you have to be important enough to look after yourself properly? You are worth it!

Tip: i take it you brush yor teeth each morning? Put your pills next to your toothbrush and leave a beaker next to it, that way, brush, rinse, then pills. Job done.

5 days in. Missed thyroxine one day and took it late one day. Not great but better. Coincidentally GP called and said I was due a blood test so will book that.

I know it's not normally best to weigh yourself daily but I find it helping my motivation to see it clearly each morning that I'm over weight. Only question I have is that I know weight fluctuates with your cycle but I didn't realise mine did so much. At the start of the week I was 12st7 / 12st6 but yesterday morning CD1 and suddenly 12st11! This morning back down to 12st8. Is that much of a change normal?

Yes it is, especially around your period. All kinds of things can affect your weight. But if you're weighing daily you'll be able to see what kind of pattern your body has.

Try cutting out sugar (check ingredients on food packaging, it is hidden in lots of things), cut out bread and cake, cut down on pasta, rice, potatoes a bit. When you go to Costa have peppermint tea or black coffee, no cake. You shouldn't need to increase your exercise to lose weight if you cut out those things. Drink lots of water Smile

coonmups
my weight fluctuates by 3-4 pounds during the week and there's not much of me!

CoonMups · 01/02/2014 13:59

Thanks - good to know. I just didn't realise it could fluctuate that much!

Interesting about sugar. There's been loads in the media about cutting out sugar rather than fat and I think that's right. Obviously fat in moderation. I think the public have been fooled for too long though about low fat products being good for you when really they pack them full of sugar instead.

I also need to drink more water still. I might give peppermint tea a go.

There's actually nothing wrong with fat (apart from transfats which are evil).

But sugar is definitely worth cutting out. Oh, and the body treats pasta/rice/bread/potatoes in exactly the same way as sugar, by the way ...

I think it's worth advising your GP that until recently, you've been forgetful with your pills (although you've turned over a new leaf now Grin ). GP might recommend leaving it a little longer before the test. Otherwise you might be prescribed a higher dosage for the wrong reasons.
