Ideas for High Protein Breakfasts (no eggs please)

Octopus37 · 12/01/2014 17:27

Hi, trying to lose half a stone at the moment, hate diets but one thing I have sussed out if that eating more protein keeps me fuller for longer. Was wondering if anyone had any ideas for high protein breakfasts. Unfortunately, I really cannot stand eggs and also don't like porridge (hate milk). Best I can come up with is a yoghurt and maybe some nuts, but not convinced that would fill me up. Also on a money diet as well (fun not) so cannot be affording to buy loads of fish and meat.

Beans and grilled tomato/ mushrooms? Should keep you full for a while!

capsium · 13/01/2014 18:25

If you liquidise yoghurt, cottage cheese together with berry fruits, it makes a delicious smoothly.

The cottage cheese adds protein, which fills you up.

capsium · 13/01/2014 18:26

^smoothy. Auto correct fail!

HoratiaDrelincourt · 13/01/2014 18:26

You can make porridge with water instead.

Picturesinthefirelight · 13/01/2014 18:27

I find this is true but fortunately I love eggs. Scrambled egg & lean bacon on bagel is a favourite.

How about bacon & beans on toast.

Nettee · 13/01/2014 18:29

Upbeat. Protein milkshake (I know the people who make it so biased). It is based on milk so might not suit you but is fruit flavoured (fruit juice and purée) and has 20g of protein in it.

Hot dogs and beans ?
Big shake of Apple juice , cucumber, celery , ginger & lime

Tofu. Make scrambled tofu, like eggs but not exactly, with a bit of turmeric for yellow and whatever herbs and spices you enjoy. Really filling.

I'd make porridge with water and eat with a bit of soya milk and some cinnamon on top.

Beans on toast.

Muesli is really filling too. Like porridge (which is of course a carb, not protein) it's low GI, so keeps you full for a long time, as protein does.

AndiMac · 13/01/2014 18:34

I never make porridge with milk, always water. You can then used honey nuts, fresh or dried fruit to jazz it up.

Cataline · 13/01/2014 18:35

Quinoa and bulgur wheat- cook in water then add to chopped fruit (I use apple, pear, grapes and blueberries)
It's like a milk-free porridge (free on SW). Very tasty and ridiculously filling! You can add a sprinkle of brown sugar and cinnamon to make it even tastier too.

Cataline · 13/01/2014 18:36

Oh and I usually add a few smashed up walnuts or pecans too!

AndiMac · 13/01/2014 18:36

Tinned fish is relatively cheap and half a can on toast would be loads of protein.

lottiegarbanzo · 13/01/2014 18:38

Also, do watch out for too many fast-processed sugars, in 'healthy' fruit, smoothies etc. They make you feel hungry again quickly. I guess you know that, since you're focusing on protein.

RedundantExpat · 13/01/2014 18:52

don't know if cooked ham is out of your price range: roll up some cream cheese in slices of ham.

If you like spicy things you could also try to hide the flavor of eggs with spices. I hate eggs myself, especially first thing in the morning, so have done various experiments to take that eggy taste out of them (vinegar, soy sauce, and/or chilli work for me)

ouryve · 13/01/2014 19:01

Fish fingers! Cheap, easy to prepare, high protein (I'm assuming you're not completely avoiding carbs)

No reason why you can't have for breakfast what you'd have as a light meal at any other time in the day, so long as you can stomach it. I made a mild veggie chilli with butternut squash and black beans, once. Got up in the morning to find that DH had already polished off the last portion for breakfast and thoroughly enjoyed it!

ouryve · 13/01/2014 19:02

And I make my porridge with unsweetened soya milk - more protein in it, that way.

RedundantExpat · 13/01/2014 19:08

cheese in general. and lots of peanut butter (with celery sticks to dip or spread on lettuce) when I was low-carbing as well.

WhyIRayLiotta · 13/01/2014 19:08

I am trying to low carb at the minute. And I really dislike eggs, but I found a recipe for breakfast muffins and they are delicious!
I use chorizo, shallots, broccoli and chillies. Stick whatever ingredients you like into a mini muffin tin - beat together 3 eggs, add salt and pepper and pour over other ingredients. I press loads some cheddar cheese on top. Bake for 15 mins. They last well in the fridge - and I have 2 in the morning (microwave for 30 secs and eat in the car on the way to work!)
I had them this morning and wasn't hungry until midday - I started work at 5am.

Octopus37 · 14/01/2014 17:07

Thanks for ideas, unfortunately beans, bacon and beans are more worse hated foods. However the quinoa and bulgar wheat porridge think sounds like a good idea, also might try porridge made with water. Also, muffin idea sounds good. Not low carbing, quite active in my day to day life, but am less carbing if that makes sense.

I'm the same as you Octopus in that I hate eggs and milk. I make porridge with almond or hazelnut milk. It's very low in calories and tastes really nice.

Beechview · 15/01/2014 18:16

I mean fairly low.

FlirtingFail · 15/01/2014 18:20

Avocado on toast. Buy the value avocados and ripen them at home.

Lidl do cheap and tasty smoked fish (trout, mackerel) if you can get to one.

I find oat porridge makes me starving and irritable by 10.30 am.

This is yummy, especially in the warmer months:

(Walnuts are cheap in Aldi....)

Chopstheduck · 15/01/2014 18:21

I eat high protein - fav is fish (salmon, trout, kippers, anything I find for cheap!) and eggs for breakfast, sometimes with mushrooms and tomatoes. Mushrooms are high in protein too for a veg. It would be fine without the eggs.

I get my carbs at breakfast from a smoothie. Veg smoothies have less sugar.

You can make up protein shakes with fruit and milk instead of water and they are quite filling.
