Is there a rough guide to how many pounds per dress size?

I am currently a size 18-20. I'm 18 in jeans, trousers etc and a 20 on top. I would really like to be a 12. I am 5ft 8 and last time I checked (about 10 days ago) 16st 8lb.

I don't really have a weight in mind, Maybe 11/12st. I think I should be about 11st.

But I do know that I really want to be a 12. I am trying to work out a weight to aim for that will mean I will be a 12.

Any ideas?

10-11 stone.

BIWI · 29/12/2013 16:15

Surely it must depend on all manner of things, e.g. your height and/or your level of fitness/how muscular you are?

Plus, of course, the fact that all the shops seem to make clothes in different sizes - a size 10 in M&S isn't even the same across all their ranges!

But to give you a rough idea, I'm 5 ft 2, and generally weigh around 9 stone 3-8lbs, and would automatically to for a size 10 if trying on new clothes. Some of my clothes are size 8 and some of them are size 12.

17leftfeet · 29/12/2013 16:22

when I was losing weight the first size drop seemed to take forever, and then I admitted to myself I'd been squeezing into clothes a size too small!

please don't aim for a size or you will be disappointed as there is no standard uk sizing

aim for a healthy weight and once you reach that tweek your ideal weight -I look terrible at the lower end of a healthy BMI for my height so I stick at the top end -which for me is achievable

I went from an average of 24 to a 14 which at 6ft tall I feel very comfortable with but I own clothes from a 12-16 and if the 16 is too small I refuse to buy bigger Grin

juneybean · 29/12/2013 16:27

It very much depends on shape, I'm 15st7 (well maybe not after Christmas) and I wear 18 bottoms and 16-18 top.

spookyskeleton · 29/12/2013 16:29

In my experience, it seems to be just over a stone per dress size (very approximate guide).

I am 5ft 8, currently a size 16 and probably weigh 14 and a half stone. I also want to be a size 12 and to do that, I need to be 12 stone (I am quite muscly so I do seem to weigh more than your average person Hmm )

If I could get down to 11 stone (too far a target to face at the mo) I would be a 10-12 which would be amazing Grin

TalkinPeace · 29/12/2013 17:05

clothes sizes are so utterly erratic nowadays that the sizes really mean nothing.
also a size 12 5'1" person is a rather different shape than a size 12 5'11" person
and everybody's frame is different ....

the best targets are ones that are clearly measurable.

Go to your favourite shop, look at a dress you like and with a tape measure, see how big it is around the hips, waist and bust.
THAT is your target.

spookyskeleton · 29/12/2013 17:15

Yep, I have 4 size 14 dresses in my wardrobe but they are clingy so I think I need to be a size 12 for them to look good. I know I will be near my target when I can wear these comfortably and they look good Grin

Mckayz · 29/12/2013 17:25

I hate dresses. I am hoping once I lose a bit of weight I will like wearing them. I spent the summer in jeans and baggy tops and was boiling.

Thanks everyone. I think I will aim for 11st 7lb and see how it goes.

in that case pick a nice pair of trousers and measure them - the tape measure does not lie
clothes labels are less consistent Smile

uptheanty · 29/12/2013 18:39

I'm 5.7 and 11 stone. I wear a size 12 on bottom and a 10/12 on top.

I must confess to a bit of a muffin top Sad but I'm working on it!

I think a truly comfortable 12 on bottom would be 10.10 for me!

I really need to lose that elusive 6 pounds!!

acrabadabra · 29/12/2013 18:43

I'm roughly the same height as you and at 12 stone I was just about to fit into a 14. I am "big boned" though in that I'm heavier than I look.

I think 10 and a half would've been me at a size 12. Never got there though (damn you ds!!!)

specialsubject · 29/12/2013 19:48

no, there's no guide. Reasonable weight for your height is between 10 and 11.5 stone-ish.

worrying about the label in your knickers is really a school thing, not for adults.

EBearhug · 29/12/2013 19:55

It won't work like that - although I know for myself that it's roughly a stone per dress size, that's me with my build and my height. And even then, it's not that simple - about 15 years ago (really? Where's my life gone?) I did some voluntary work overseas for a few months, which was basically labouring in the hot sun. I came back exactly the same weight as when I went, but my clothes were decidedly looser, and I was fitter and more toned, so the weight was muscle rather than fat.

cantthinkofagoodone · 29/12/2013 19:59

I'm 5.6 and 10.10 and a 12 pretty much everywhere except next.

JemimaMuddledUp · 29/12/2013 20:08

I am shorter than you (5'6") but I found I roughly went down a dress size every stone. I started at 15st and a size 20. I am now 9st 3 and an 8 or a 10 depending on the shop. So, for me:

15st - size 20
14st - size 18
13st - size 16
12st - size 14
11st - size 12
10st - size 10
9st - size 8.

madamecake · 29/12/2013 20:15

I'm 5'9" and usually 11st 3 and a comfortable size 12. Have put 3-4 pounds on can still get in my jeans but they're a bit snugsnug.

I was 13st 5 and a size 16 a couple years ago, so roughly a stone a dress is about right for me.

capsium · 01/01/2014 13:45

I sometimes try and visualise a pound of fat as about two packs of lard.

But then it depends where it is deposited as to how it affects your dress size.

This is fat as well, some of your body weight will be water and muscle.

capsium · 01/01/2014 13:47

If you have fat measuring scales you can work out how much fat you want to lose and visualise that in terms of packs of lard to give an idea of volume.

capsium · 01/01/2014 13:48

Some fat is also internal. It lies around the organs.

BananaNotPeelingWell · 01/01/2014 13:49

For me, I seem to work out at a stone between sizes. That's a very rough guide and I guess probably different for others.

capsium · 01/01/2014 13:51

www.cockeyed.com/photos/bodies/heightweight.html

This charts has images of people's weight at a certain height. They do vary.

Trills · 01/01/2014 13:56

I agree with BIWI.

When we have threads saying "hoe tall are you, what do you weigh, and what dress size do you wear?" it all comes out VERY different.

It's probably best if you don't aim for a wight at all but aim for a size, or for a waist measurement.

Marks and Spencer say for a size 12 you should be aiming for a 29 inch waist and 39 inch hips

This also means that if you do a lot of exercise and gain muscle (getting slimmer but not necessarily lighter) you'll still feel the progress in your chosen measurement.

Cheesyslice · 01/01/2014 19:49

In answer to the question in your thread title, I'm doing LighterLife lite and they reckon approx 10lbs = one dress size. But obviously, as other wise owls here have said, this will vary from person to person. Good luck Smile

Cherieeepow · 04/02/2022 04:00

I know this is an old post and u probably won't even see it but reading ur question and the non answers u had I felt I had to reply. So I'm 6ft1, probably 6ft now age is creeping up on me but at 11st I was a size 8 and swinging on me (before the days of 6 and 4s etc) but iv also been 18st 10 and size 20, busting out I might add! 3 kids later and "apparently " one inch shorter what Iv learned is don't worry about weight, don't worry about what size u wear, as long as ur comfortable in ur clothes and happy then that's all that matters xx
