Is my baby belly a lost cause?

I would love some thoughts on my situation. After my son was born I got back in shape through running, the gym, videos like shred and by going to a boot camp. After my daughter was born I was just getting back into these things when I became very unwell, I was off work for six months with post viral fatigue.

Recently I have been trying to get back to my old exercise routine but each time felt very unwell for days afterwards until my dr told me I needed to rethink for the time being if I want to fully recover. She suggested yoga which I am loving actually and I now do some every day. I certainly notice a difference in flexibility and just in how I feel mood wise now I can at least be a bit active again however I am about half stone heavier than I want to be and I still have a big baby belly.

I avoid calorie counting as I have history of eating disorders and I don't want to go there again, but have really relied on high impact workouts to stay in shape. I don't think my diet is too bad. I don't drink or eat wheat as it triggers my ibs. I usually have a greens smoothie for breakfast, some kind of salad based thing for lunch - with eggs, tuna or avocado for example. Tea we might have fish or risotto. My one vice is dark chocolate, I usually have a couple of squares a day (4 on a bad day!). I snack on oatcakes, peanut butter, green peas or carrots.

I would love to look a bit less pregnant but is there a way to do this without running, high impact stuff? Or is my diet need needing a change?

I should add I am still in the healthy weight range but I am only five foot two so just feel I am better of a few pounds lighter than I am now.

Your diet sounds healthy. I like yoga but not sure its the best exercise for weight loss. How about long walks or bike rides? Not as strenuous as running but will burn more calories than yoga. But keep up the yoga as well!

Talkinpeace · 03/12/2013 13:09

Pilates

icepole · 03/12/2013 13:10

Yes I could do walking. Don't own a bike at the moment. That is my worry about the yoga, it won't be enough.

Oh someone just lent me a Pilates video, will try it out today!

How would Pilates be better? Interested as I've never done it and always thought it was a gentler version of yoga?

icepole · 03/12/2013 13:18

No idea! Is it the core work maybe?

OP posts:
VivaLeBeaver · 03/12/2013 13:21

But yoga works your core.

Talkinpeace · 03/12/2013 13:23

Nope.
I do both and they are very different.
Pilates has elements of yoga but it focuses much more on the core (from hips to shoulders)
Joseph Pilates was an interesting man en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Pilates
and the current versions of Pilates en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilates
are great for improving posture, core strength and slimming down muscles
Yoga is better for flexibility and upper body strength

That is my worry about the yoga, it won't be enough.
That depends on the type of yoga
the Vinyasa flow classes I'm doing at the moment are killer - 55 minutes constantly in and out of up dog, down dog, warrior 1 / 2 / 3, planks etc etc - love it

BodyBalance is great if you can get to a class

icepole · 03/12/2013 13:27

Is it very high impact? Sounds great! I have to watch not to push too hard though. Do you think a combination of Pilates and yoga would help?

VivaLeBeaver · 03/12/2013 13:31

I have found some great weight loss yoga videos on YouTube which are more hard work.

Talkinpeace · 03/12/2013 13:31

Bodybalance = no impact (TiP has mangled knees!)

I do a plank every day, just for 2 minutes and my stomach is back to what it was pre-baby. It's a great, efficient exercise and you don't have to join a class or go to the gym.

icepole · 03/12/2013 13:52

Yeah I can't really get to a class beyond the once a week at yoga. It has to be DVD, you tube etc. I feel a bit more hopeful now, just need to learn some new tricks!

What about swimming? If you bought a float and did a few lengths of butterfly kick it would hit your stomach muscles.

jammiedonut · 11/12/2013 18:37

i bought weightloss pilates for dummies, its great.

pimplywrinkle · 14/12/2013 06:52

Minboggles. Is that a 2 minute plank just once a day? I ve just started and can only do a minute

Turquoiseblue · 14/12/2013 07:49

Pilates or swimming are great for core and tummy
