Help! Addicted to sugar

How do I get the willpower to stop eating sugar. I eat chocolate, cakes, biscuits etc and can't stop.

It has made me overweight, bad skin and is bad for my teeth but I still can't stop eating the stuff.

What has anyone else done to kick this bad habit at the moment I worry that my dc will think its normal to eat so much junk and I don't want them growing up like me.

Just go cold turkey.
Its the only way unfortunately.

I stopped eating all processed sugary stuff and just had sugar from fruit (1-2 portions a day)

Eat regular and proper meals which contain protein, veg and complex carbs and only snack if you really need to. Drink lots of water. After a few days of this, you will start to feel better.

Have you had a look at the Zoe Harcombe plan? She gives a plan on her website which helps you to kick foods that are bad for us. I followed it a few years back. It was very effective and I lost 5lbs in a week. You don't have to pay or anything. It's worth having a look.

Sugar (other than intrinsic sugar in fruit and veg) is the one food group that you can totally do without.
Stop buying ANYTHING with sugar / fructose / dextrose / aspartame / saccharine - any sweetener on the list of ingredients.

Keep buying fruit so that the kids still get "afters"

but NOTHING with added sugar comes into your house or passes your lips

after a month you'll wonder what you were worrying about.

Thank you both for the tips. I will look at that website I have never seen it.

We always have goodies in the cupboard so that doesn't help me so I will need to not buy any. That is easier said then done but I really need to put a stop to this so I have thought I will always write a shopping list and only buy what's on it to avoid buying it.

Neither you, nor the kids need "goodies"

A large glass of milk and some fruit is an ideal after school snack if they are too small to last through to supper.
But the really important rule to get all of you used to for long term health is no snacking
because if you stop buying 'snack foods' you are half way there
outside of meal times the kitchen is closed
its an old fashioned way of eating but it works
Good Luck. You'll do just fine.

Im the same - ive wondered if i should go to a hypnotist. Setimes
Im like a woman possessed frantically searching the cupboards.

My friends
Have no sugar in there house - we get theough two bags a week!

holidayseeker · 20/11/2013 08:15

Thanks talk, plum I have also thought about hypnotherapy but then think it's ridiculous as I should be able to stop myself. I am also dubious about if it would work.

I wish it was as easy as others make it sound - I think it's a really hard thing to give up and I've wanted to do it myself several times. Have you read Potatoes not Prozac? She gives a step-by-step plan to quitting.

plum100 · 20/11/2013 20:52

I will order that from the library i think

Beryl
Yup, its hard. But its worth it for dozens of health reasons.
It comes down to what sort of parent and grandparent you hope to be.

Do not try to do it alone. Get support, both virtual on here and real life.

plum
go for it.

Sugar is HIGHLY addictive. Apparently sugar lights up the same pathways in the brain as cocaine!

I've lost 31kg in the last 14 months and one very interesting thing I have observed is that if I have chocolate (my drug of choice), I just want more and more of it, I feel I NEED it and really struggle with my eating over the next couple of days.

Recently I had a couple of glasses of wine, (lots of sugar) which is very rare for me. I then had a sleepless night and the next day I wanted to eat everything that wasn't nailed down.

So basically my long winded way of saying you need to stop feeding your addiction to sugar.

holidayseeker · 21/11/2013 00:07

Thanks beryl I'll check that out.

Talk your right I want to be full of health when older and really know now I have to make the change before it never happens.
