How long does it take to lose the sugar craving if you cut out sweet stuff?

Hi all,
I'm just wondering how to get off the sugar roller-coaster? I have not always craved sweeter things, but since having kids (now 7 and 3) I am more hungry generally, and find that I eat stuff I didn't used to, which then makes me want more of it etc etc.
I have never needed to diet before, but I'm putting on weight and it's staying there now, so I want to over-haul my approach. I just eat too much - full stop. Both healthy food and not so healthy. What's the best way to turn this around, and would a few days of veg and salad help cut the cravings? What food fills you up best?
Bit of a novice here!!

Try and cut down gradually is the best way, I think.

Or you can substitute with fruit- which does still have quite a lot of sugar in the form of fructose, but also has vitamins and fibre and things that biscuits don't have!

It would also take you a long time to eat the equivalent amount of sugar in a chocolate bar just through eating bananas, for example.

Or you can do a fast day if you want to kickstart things- I find that generally resets my tastebuds.
