How do you stop eating?

I don't mean altogether.

But does anyone have any tricks when they are about to reach for that bag of crisps?

How do you stop yourself?

I try to stop and think about what I'm about to eat and whether I really "need" it. I think it's called conscious eating or summat. As I maintain my weight mainly through exercise I also try to equate the unnecessary food with how long I would need to run/cycle etc to burn it off. If I decide I "need" it and will work the extra calories off I eat it! Often I decide I don't want whatever it is that much.

GrimmaTheNome · 28/08/2013 16:30

If you're doing something like the 5:2 you do it by reminding yourself you can have the crisps tomorrow.

Some people find that saying that Kate Moss (IIRC) thing helps something like 'nothing tastes as good as slim feels''

The other way of course is to stop buying crisps.

Fifi2406 · 28/08/2013 21:52

I have just avoided eating a whole pack of biscuits by throwing them out the window into the back garden (i'll get them tomorrow and put them in the bin) and going to bed! Confused I literally have no will power! I also try to imagine what my head would loon like on the body I want! It's harder if everyone else in your house eats all that stuff and you can't!

Sleepyhead33 · 31/08/2013 22:37

Planning. I know I will want a treat in the evening so I make sure I have low cal versions in so it won't hurt if I do reach for them - frozen yoghurt, ice lollies, hot chocolate etc
Don't have them in the house then you can't be tempted.

if its not there you cannot eat it

When the meal is over, the kitchen is closed.

Look after yourself in other ways - exercise, get a good haircut, buy nice clothes (even if you're intending to lose weight!). I find if I feel good about myself I am far less likely to binge.

Lizzylou · 04/09/2013 09:51

Plan!
Don't buy the stuff in the first place.
Go on Myfitnesspal and log all of your food.
Also, if you exercise you tend to think "why would I want to undo my hard work by eating that cake/bag of crisps/chocolate bar"

VisualiseAHorse · 04/09/2013 12:10

I agree, just don't buy it in the first place. I treat myself in the evening by having one 'nice' thing, maybe two scoops of ice cream, a bit of Baileys or a cider or an ice lolly. I find that having a proper treat time in the evening once the baby is in bed, gives me something to focus on all day. One I've got through the day and have done everything that needs to be done (washing up etc) I can actually sit down and properly enjoy my treat, and feel as if I have earned it.

Water. I've come to realise that pretty much every time I think 'Ooh, I quite fancy a smackerel of something', it's actually thirst. I drink a lot of water these days, and I can say I happily eat three reasonable meals a day, and don't snack. I'm still fat though Grin

biryani · 04/09/2013 18:11

Extra strong mints (just one or two mind....) They seem to kill the appetite.

CaptainSweatPants · 04/09/2013 18:13

I clean my teeth straight after dinner

Seems to curb the cravings

CaptainSweatPants · 04/09/2013 18:13

I also try not to drink at home to stop the munchies

TheTruffleHunter · 04/09/2013 18:15

I'm with CreamCheese - if I fancy a packet of crisps I'll have a glass of water and wait 15 mins... doesn't always work but usually does - and if I have the crisps at least I'm better hydrated! Smile

IcedTeaOneSugar · 04/09/2013 18:15

I do slimming world and agree that planning is key, including planning treats, knowing I'm having a kit Kat later really helped my say no when everyone else had a takeaway earlier.

Bowlersarm · 04/09/2013 18:20

What worked for me was eating properly for three meals and just not snacking.

Literally nothing between meals, apart from drinks. And no justifying ie 'I.ll have to eat that cake because my friend made it' or 'I can eat fruit because that is good for me'. Just say no. It really isn't long to hold out between meals. And then eat more or less what you want, but healthily, for three meals.

And once your stomach starts to shrink it gets easier.

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 04/09/2013 18:22

Go and clean your teeth immediately. I can't bear to eat when my teeth are clean.

Lost over 2 stone that way Smile

Yonihadtoask · 04/09/2013 18:26

Great tips here.

The constant water drinking is my fall back.

However, am struggling at the moment. Boredom snacking.
Fifi- that made me laugh out loud at throwing the biscuits out of the window Grin

Talkinpeace · 04/09/2013 18:37

NO SNACKING
The kitchen is closed.
Have a cup of tea or a pint of water but NOTHING with calories in until the next meal time.
And nothing at all after supper. Ever.

specialsubject · 05/09/2013 18:34

if you are really hungry, have some real food, sandwich etc. Crisps are just fat and air.

there are a lot of people to take tips from, but druggie fashion models are not among them.

BsshBossh · 05/09/2013 20:20

Paul McKenna has a good tip of visualising your favourite binge food (eg crisps) as being smothered with something you find disgusting (eg maggots). You have to keep practising the visualisation but apparently it works.

I just impose a no snacking rule so crisps etc have to be eaten with a meal. It means I'm too full from the main meal to eat many crisps or much ice cream but I still get to eat a little bit.

I agree with the DRINK WATER FIRST suggestions.
