BMI and breast size?

Is it just me or is BMI not that accurate when you consider that someone could have large boobs and be big boned?

Now I know I am overweight but I am also fairly muscular and I have fairly big boobs (Es).

An interesting one, I'm a 34G and am overweight but never lose weight from my boobs. I am heavy - 12 stone 12 and an easy 14, sometimes a 12. My BMI is 29.5 I think so almost obese!

HaveIGotPoosForYou · 09/08/2013 22:59

I'm not quite that big!

36E and 11 stone / wear size 14 clothes at the moment, but nearly down to a 12. I'm not sure if my size makes a difference, but I simply think that due to their being fairly heavy, that's adding at least a couple of extra pounds onto my weight, surely?

If BMI is supposed to be a proxy for unhealthy size, I don't see that big boobs make you more unhealthy so I agree with you.

I've put on weight recently (annoying) but before I did I had a BMI of about 25.5. If I'd had a boob reduction it would probably have been about 24.5 - but I wouldn't have been magically healthier.

teaforthree · 11/08/2013 16:18

Mine says I'm obese, but my bra size is 32j and I'm 5'2". I'm not skinny, I am overweight, but wouldn't say I was clinically obese like the calculator tells me!

enderwoman · 11/08/2013 16:21

Makes sense.
On a similar topic I have a very flat arse. If I had one that was more womanly and pert that would add a few pounds to me and not make me any more or less healthy.

meditrina · 11/08/2013 16:28

Healthy BMI is a range, and yes you can have enormous boobs and still be comfortably within the healthy range.

Even if they were massive, and your weight was 'meant' to be at/towards the top of the healthy range (ie large frame as well), it would only tip you over just into 'overweight', not somewhere verging on the "obese" category.

Yes, you do get outliers on BMI, where is is not a good indicator. But most of us aren't top flight athletes.

VeryDullNameChange · 11/08/2013 16:36

This is one reason why waist measurement is such a good guide - it's unaffected by breast size. Is your waist measurement within the healthy range OP?

Relaxedandhappyperson · 11/08/2013 21:58

Wow - according to Wikipedia's table my boobs weight 11lb combined.

That really makes a difference.

TheWookiesWife · 11/08/2013 22:51

Oh wow - I'm so going to check out my boob weight on wiki now !! Teehee !!

TheWookiesWife · 11/08/2013 22:55

4.6lbs !! Whoop whoop !!

Nicknamegrief · 11/08/2013 22:57

Me too.

I wear a size 8/10 and have 30J boobs (currently breast feeding though- usually a 30H).

Still need to stop eating crap though.

WifeofGru · 11/08/2013 23:00

The skeletons of obese individuals are same size as non-obese, taking into consideration age, height and sex. Google CT images of an obese patient.
The bones are not making the individual big.

5madthings · 11/08/2013 23:02

Where can you find out how much your boobs weigh?! Link? I once tried to weigh my boobs on an electronic scale, it didn't really work.

My bmi is about 25. I have a 29 inch waist and am 5 2 I can wear a size ten on my bottom half but have massive boobs.

meditrina · 11/08/2013 23:25

Online tables vary enormously, depending on which you're looking at.

If you want to work it out for your own particular contours, you need to use the eureka method. Dip each breast into a container brimming with water, and with that container standing in another to catch the overflow. Measure that in metric for the volume. You can't know the exact density of your individual breasts (mixture of tissue and fat, both of which are lighter than water), so you have to use a rule of thumb - the one I saw suggested multiplying by 0.9 to give weight.

You can't just knock it off your weight, though, as BMI for women already allows for breasts. And for most of us, excess weight may be stored in breasts as well as elsewhere in the body.

RawCoconutMacaroon · 11/08/2013 23:30

I wear a 12 on my bottom half an 18 on top. I have broad shoulders and enormous boobs 34H according to a MN recent bra intervention although I have been unable to find a bra that size (but a 36G works fairly well).

I am overweight yes, but I do think the boobs must be worth a couple of extra BMI points at least! Shock.

Even when I was a teen and slim, they were very large- I'm pretty sure people think I've had Californian style implants!!!

Because of the mismatch between my top and bottom half, I have to be careful to wear fitted or stretch tops with long slim body to show my waist off - otherwise my waist/hips are swamped by tent-like shirts and I gain an instant couple of stones Sad.

meditrina · 11/08/2013 23:41

I've just been playing with the wiki breast weight chart, and a BMI calculator. Taking the weight from my (properly fitted) current G cups, knocking off wiki's 'average' weight (on the assumption that much at least has already been allowed for on a female weight chart) then working BMI before and after allowing for breasts, the BMI difference was 0.6.

ouryve · 11/08/2013 23:45

I don't know. I am at the top of my healthy weight range at 10st7 and size 14. Boobs are 32FF but they're not the first place that comes to mind for wanting to lose a few pounds. They are by no means out ofroportion to the rest of me.

RawCoconutMacaroon · 11/08/2013 23:49

0.6? Disappointing!

RawCoconutMacaroon · 11/08/2013 23:50

Unless that's per boob?

meditrina · 11/08/2013 23:57

Nope, that was for both (sorry!) but as you can see from my earlier posts, I'm a bit sceptical about there being much boob impact on BMI anyhow.

Once you are over a J cup, though, the weight does seem to go up quite a lot, so the difference might be greater. But not enough to take you from a healthy 18-25 all the way to an obese 30+

RNJ3007 · 11/08/2013 23:57

If I take my breast weight off, my BMI drops 2.4 points...haha!

My BMI is total rubbish. To get to the overweight/obese borderline I would have to drop muscle or bone mass, or amputate a limb! My consultant agrees it is stupid.

Relaxedandhappyperson · 12/08/2013 06:47

Meditrina

For me BMI including boobs is 25.5. BMI excluding boobs is 23.9.
That's a significant difference in my book - from overweight to comfortably within range. Even adding back in the average total breast weight of 2lb, gives a BMI of 24.0.

So while you may be correct that for the average woman breast weight makes little difference to BMI that's certainly not true for those of us with sizeable ones.

Going back to what I said above, if the BMI is a proxy for healthy weight storage then it's not clear to me how storing fat in breasts is particularly unhealthy given that in theory I could lose 1.5 BMI points under the knife and yet have exactly the same amount of fat on the tummy/internal organs.

Lanamarie · 02/05/2020 15:42

So I’m a 34GG and an athlete, I’m fairly slim but my BMI says I’m overweight ? I don’t look it and feel like my chest pushes me over ?

Jackie230594 · 21/07/2024 20:01

Well I am a 32JJ (UK) and a dress size 16, waist size 36", height 5ft8 and my bmi is 29.5. So I am borderline obese, but apparently that size boobs can weigh 4kg.
