meal replacement shakes

Hey all. I've recently had major back surgery and it has meant no exercise till at least beginning of next year. So I have unfortunately eaten to make the feeling of depression ease but of course this hasn't worked cos I have now put on so much weight im the heaviest ive ever been and I feel disgusting. I have tried weight watchers, cutting down, no snacking but nothing is working and I guess its because I can't even walk a short distance at the moment. So I wondered if these meal replacement shakes are any good? ? Anyone have experience with them? I understand that if I started and then suddenly stopped id prob put weight back on but can u do this long term?
Any help or advice would be great. X

Are you considering totally replacing your meals with shakes or just replacing a couple of meals with shakes?

birchykel · 04/08/2013 16:29

Just a couple. I love food so it will be hard but I need to do something.

I had success a few years ago with Slim Fast. Replaced 2 meals and had a healthy meal in the evening. But i was also walking 5 miles a day. I managed to lose 3 stone and i liked it. But then i got into a new relationship and healthy eating kind of went out of the window and i put some of my weight back on. But that's not the products fault, its mine. Compared with some meal replacements i thought the chocolate and strawberry actually tasted good.

Years ago I lost a lot of weight on the Slimfast plan (although I was able to exercise as well). If you are disciplined it works well. Yes you are hungry to begin with but it gets you used to eating less and you just have to be careful not to return to all your bad eating habits. I think its not a very good idea to do it too long term though as your body will just get used to a very low calorie diet and go into starvation mode.

birchykel · 04/08/2013 20:17

This is the problem I cant exercise and walking is limited. My partner is a health freak loves the gym and eats great but I just haven't got his willpower or motivation. I know it's cos I am low alot due to my situation. I wana try shakes but is it gona help stop my cravings? How do I stop this? So difficult.

Well done u guys on ur weight loss tho. Xx

It is a tough one. As Ponks has said, you are hungry to begin with but you do get used to it. The shakes won't stop your cravings but my cravings did lessen over time. Have you considered a hypnosis CD/therapy to see if that might help your cravings?

I understand how you feel at the moment. I'm unable to exercise like i used to and frankly if its not nailed to the ground i want to eat it. This last week i've eaten so much its triggered me to look again at my diet. I don't want to go back to where i was and it would be so easy to do so.

You can do it. It'll just be hard at first.

birchykel · 10/08/2013 20:04

Thanks Queen I am exactly as you are, I just want to eat everything. It's so hard. I have decided not to turn to shakes for now but I've bought so green tea and I try to have one of those when I feel a craving come on. It was working past few days but today I've been bad, had a big galaxy bar, three weetabix with sugar and that was after I had eaten dinner!

I went to see my doctor and once again not taken seriously, she said to see the nurse (as I had to have blood test too) but went for blood test and nurse said nothing even though I booked in for a double appointment and it had on screen that I was there for blood and weight. So instead of saying anything I just had test and walked out.

Haven't tried hypnosis/cd or anything like that. I've always thought it wouldn't work?

I'm sorry about your nurses appointment. But you had a good few days before you started on the over eating so that's progress. I've had to stop buying certain things at the moment because i just can't be trusted with them. If they're not in i can't eat them and i certainly won't go out and buy them. I'm just too lazy at the moment.

Hypnosis might not work for you but you've nothing to lose by giving it a go. There is a thread for people using the Paul Mckenna I Can Make You Thin system. I'm just getting back into this as it worked well when i was listening to the CD every night but then i got sloppy, stopped listening, stopped following the golden rules and as a result i've gained half of the weight i lost. There are lots of other hypnosis cd's on amazon and probably some apps for your mobile phone as well.

It's just about finding what will work for you in the long term. I've tried every quick fix going and now i'm going to have to accept that it won't come off overnight. You can do it. Don't be to hard on yourself and take it one day at a time.

birchykel · 11/08/2013 21:42

Thank u for the good advice, I will give it ago. I just don't know what or where I can get support, like proper support.

I hope u manage to get back on track.

I did Cambridge - lost 6 stone, 5 - 6 dress sizes. 3 shakes plus small salad. Oodles of water. Was easy and I have STRUGGLED for years before then. Kept weight off now for 2 years.

QueenOfHalloween · 14/08/2013 22:58

Celebrity Slim are on sale in Superdrug. If you go to their website it shows you the various items you can buy. It's just over 30 quid for a starter kit and then £24.99 for a 7 day supply of the various flavours.

birchykel · 25/08/2013 12:43

Oh wow looster well done!
Isn't Cambridge diet expensive? I don't want to spend too much as money is tight.
My other half isn't keen on me doing it as he thinks I should just try and eat healthy and cut out bad food....easier said than done.

www.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/mp-max-elle-true-diet/10530508.html - I have this one as it is more of a protein shake than the others that are full of sugar.

NannyR · 25/08/2013 13:56

Why not try making your own shakes? At the moment, I make a smoothie every morning for breakfast - one banana, a handful of frozen blueberries, 15g oats, 5g ground almonds and 5g ground linseed mixture and 150 ml semi skim milk, stick it all in the blender. It's delicious and keeps me going till lunch. It comes in at around 290cals which is similar to slim fast but cheaper and healthier.

birchykel · 27/08/2013 23:00

Thanks nannyr may give it a go. Im struggling big time I tell ya. I look In the mirror and can't believe the change.

Hi all
im new and was just wondering if anybody has tried tescos ultra slim shakes?

im starting mine tomorrow :-)

ilovepowerhoop · 09/09/2013 18:52

I have but they are very sugary

ilovepowerhoop · 09/09/2013 18:56

just checked the nutritional info and one serving has 25g of sugar!

maniccats · 10/09/2013 18:31

Always look at the sugar content. Slimfast is very high in sugar too. If you have these, you will be feeding your sugar and carb addiction, and will get cravings when you try to do without. You need a high protein shake, with low carbs and no sugar. The ones I use (2 shakes per day and one proper meal and 2 proper snacks) are gluten free and lactose free too, and taste wonderful.
