Holy CRAP. I just got weighed and I need help!

Hello.

I am in shock. I just got weighed. I have been avoiding the scales since DC2 was born 18 months ago. I knew I was big. I feel big and my clothes look awful on me. I am 16 stone!!! How the hell did this happen??? Sad .

I am 5ft 9" so SHOULD apparently weigh somewhere between 10 to 11.5 stone. Such a long way to go.

I need to do something about this. I feel crap. I get out of breath when playing with the kids. I try and avoid most of the physical activities with them and manage to 'volunteer' DH for it. That's bad is't it? They'll grow up knowing their mummy is fat and lazy. I can't let them think that. I need to change this starting NOW!

I have suffered with postnatal depression after the bith of both our children and when I'm depressed I eat. Problem is, I don't eat healthy food. I crave KFC, chocolate, fizzy drinks. I do take the kids swimming once a week or so but with a 5 year old and an 18 month old, I do very little actual swimming, more just splashing about and keeping them safe. I also do walk a lot. I don't drive so I walk everywhere but should really make more of an effort.

I am so out of proportion. My waist could probably pass for a size 14- 16 which I don't mind but then my bum and my hips are measuring about a size 20! Consequently nothing fits nicely. It's either faaaar too tight around my bum and legs or fits OK around my bum but drooping and gaping around my waist.

I need to fix this. Any tips? My friend recently lost 4.5 stone on slimming world but it seems fairly complicated. I'm not the best cook and DC2 is still fairly young and needs a lot of supervision so I don't get a lot of time to faff about in the kitchen.

Another one of my friends has lost 4 stone on Weight Watchers. This might work for me. I need to stick at whatever I choose though. I can't carry on getting bigger each year.

So this is me. I am 29 yrs old, married, 2 kids....and nearly 6 stone over weight! Anyone else out there?

I am aiming to get down to 10 stone 5 and I'm not too worried how long it takes. I want to be healthy.

I have 79lbs to lose! Blush Anyone want to join me?

Does anyone know if losing this much is possible without surgery? Will I have loads of excess skin left over? Is it do-able?

Thanks x

You'd be more than welcome to join the chiefs too hiccup.

We've all 'friended' each other on MFP so we can see each other's diaries. Trust me, there's a lot of cake for dinner entries.

My most memorable day so far has consisted pretty much solely of hula hoops and cider.

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 28/07/2013 11:44

Ha, ha, Randall...I've just skim read part of a chiefs thread to try to work out want randalling is but I think I'd need to go even further back to figure it out!

Thanks for the invite! I am on a MFP support thread here but it has gone pretty quiet lately so have I since I fell off the wagon

RandallPinkFloyd · 28/07/2013 12:12

It's basically going out, eating out, drinking some things, eating some more things, generally having a merry old time. Then having to fast for two days afterwards because you used up three days worth of calories in 12 hours!

Not a strategy you'll find in too many diet books Blush

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 28/07/2013 12:50

Ha, sounds very similar to what I've been following for the last couple of weeks but without the fasting Blush!!

One thing I did discover was that in just a couple of weeks of using MFP, I had untrained myself to be able to eat a whole packet of biscuits Shock. Unfortunately, it took the same amount of time to re-train myself Hmm.

I'm back on the wagon, I'm back on the wagon, I'm back on the wagon hopes no-one looks at my food diary today.

RandallPinkFloyd · 28/07/2013 13:04

I found having people see my diary was awfully sobering! It really made me think of what my diet actually consisted of. If I was embarrassed to write it down then I already knew I shouldn't eat it iyswim.

I also love how easy MFP is to use. Being able to record exactly what I'm eating when I'm eating it is perfect for me because it was the stuff I was 'accidentally' eating the was making me fat. The little sneaky snack here and there, the complete lack of portion control, the bingey days that I never bothered to compensate for, that kind of thing.

mrscog · 28/07/2013 13:59

Great news MrsG and all those garden jobs are great 'all over' exercise. You're right that as well as the effect of exercise, doing jobs like that also decreases snacking potential time!

Weigh in tomorrow :) keep focussed and I'm keeping everything crossed for you :) xx

MrsGyllenhaal · 29/07/2013 22:01

Hiya. Thank you all.

I lost.......1bs :( Still, a loss is better than a gain and actually after my weekend of none stop eating I am amazed I've lost anything! I'm now 15 st 6.

Woo hoo! A loss is a loss, and 1 pound is no mean feat.

Well done you Thanks

LaundryLegoLunch · 30/07/2013 14:46

Well done MrsG any loss is great. There have been loads of weeks where I lost 1lb and many where I lost less but it goes like that for most people. You'll probably have a sudden 3lb loss in a week or two.
And now only 6lb to a stone loss!

mrscog · 30/07/2013 16:27

Well done MrsG 1lb is still 1lb and by your own admission you had a few treats. How have you done so far this week? You'll soon hit the 1st barrier :)

MrsGyllenhaal · 01/08/2013 11:52

Thanks everyone. It's keeping me motivated knowing you guys are checking up on me!

This week has been really good with regards to eating. I've found sticking to healthy choices very easy and have been well within my weight watchers points limit every day. However, I have been a little bit lax with the exercise Blush . I am finding having both the children home every day is keeping me busy but not really active enough to be feeling the burn so to speak! I never seem to have more than a few minutes before someone is wanting something, arguing, falling over, needing a drink, wanting to do crafts etc.

I have been out in the garden a lot with both the boys though and kept active with gardening, playing and managing to get DS1 to walk more. Just walking up to the museum instead of catching the bus like we used to do. Walking to the shops to pick up new craft supplies. He hasn't minded one bit and DS2 is happy enough in the pushchair so that's good.

Anyway, I am still here. Still going. Hopefully still losing!

DH is off work for 2 weeks starting tomorrow afternoon so with all the days out and things I may struggle. Also it's DS1's 6th birthday on Monday (aarrrgh, how the hell did that happen??! I'm not old enough to have a 6 year old surely!) but his bowling party is this Saturday. All I keep thinking is I MUST STAY AWAY FROM THE BIRTHDAY CAKE! I know if I taste it, I'll want more. I still find the best way to not binge is to not start eating it in the first place. I still don't quite trust myself, after one mouthful, I tend to feel 'naughty' anyway so think 'what the hell' and keep going. I am terrible around cake! Also DH's 30th birthday later this month too so lots of challenges coming up!

How is everyone else? Hope you're all surviving the summer holidays :)

Tbh diet is what matters. The exercise will tone and help your overall fitness obviously but shedding the pounds is all about what you eat.

Sounds like you're doing great, keep it going!

mrscog · 01/08/2013 16:43

Yes - exercise is not that important to weight loss if you're eating well. Have you ever heard of the saying 'you can't out train a bad diet'? It will help speed things along but it's not as crucial as eating well.

It's the planning which will get you through the next 2 weeks and knowing how to make good choices. Days out - take some healthy snacks with you, drink only tea, coffee, water, diluted squash - sugary drinks really bump up calories. If I'm eating out in a café/fast food place in the day now I don't even think 'oooh what drink', I have still or sparkling water only and that's that.

Also with days out, if you're going to be eating out, see if the menu is online before hand to help you plan what you might like. There might be something delicious and hard to resist - go for it, but plan a healthy breakfast and tea instead, or you might not really fancy anything much off the list, so make that your 'light meal' of the day and just go for a snack.

Well done for recognising that the birthday cake is a danger point for you. One thing you can do is minimise the amount of 'spare' cake. Cut generous slices for anyone that is having some, send pieces home for other family members/siblings etc. The more that goes away from you is less temptation and also means that if you were to cave, overall there is less around!

However I would try to work on feeling 'naughty' after one bite of cake so then thinking 'what the hell'. It is not naughty to have a bite, or even one slice of cake, as part of an otherwise controlled lifestyle. It is naughty to think 'what the hell' and eat 5 slices of cake! Once you've lost all the weight you need to (which I have no doubt you will) you'll need to maintain your weight at a healthy level. Eating one piece of cake a week could easily be part of this. I certainly eat at least one dessert or one piece of cake a week and I maintain a very 'slim' weight.

Keep going and plan plan plan! :)

BsshBossh · 01/08/2013 21:50

Definitely agree that weightloss is 80% diet and 20% exercise. I did no exercise in 2012 yet lost 3 stones.

1lb loss is great, by the way. Don't give up on the weeks you lose a little or nothing or you gain otherwise you will undo all your hard work so far.

Keep going, we're here rooting for ya!

BsshBossh · 01/08/2013 21:52

Oh yeah, and don't worry if you can't exercise - just ensure you move alot throughout the day. Fidgeting when sitting down burns more calories than just keeping still. It all adds up. Check out NEAT:

MightilyOats · 02/08/2013 16:16

Have you thought about hypnosis? I found the easy loss one after looking at the paul mckenna thread on here. I was desperate to lose some weight (size 16/18 when have been a size 12 all my younger years). They have a free version of the iphone app or you can get it from amazon - but it sort of reprogrammes your mind to eat smaller portions and you can eat anything you like without feeling guilty - you just have a little bit of it and that's somehow enough? Its a bit like magic really! Have lost about 23lb so far, and finally in the healthy bmi range which I haven't been for about 6 or 7 years.

MightilyOats · 02/08/2013 16:18

ps i had a week of drinking squash, and put 1lb back on, so its tap water all the way for me now (part of the hypnosis is liking the taste of water and wanting to drink it - I didn't listen for a week and started hating the taste again!)
