Fat legs! Help!

StannisTheMannis · 06/06/2013 14:58

I have discovered that the area I appear to put on weight is my legs, particularly my calves. And it's really putting me off wearing skirts this summer!

I'm not overweight and don't have any other problem areas (yet I suppose!) and I've never been on a diet before.

What's the best way to focus on my legs? Both weight loss and toning?

Thanks

Running is the only thing that sorts my chunky calves out, just jogging, 20-30 mins 3-4 times a week

Oooh, running doesn't make them bigger then? Thought it might.

I'm hoping it doesn't as I'm running a fair amount at the moment for exactly the same reason. I also have chubby knees which is intensely irritating in summer!

Sprinting can make your legs a bit bigger as your pushing away so hard, although women generally find it hard to put on muscle due to hormones. Running medium to long distance will make your legs smaller, as it cuts fat and can make muscle smaller to be more economical if that makes sense... personally running is the only thing that makes any difference to my legs!

You can't target weight loss from one area of your body only. Weight loss will happen over the whole body. However you can tone specific areas. I sympathise re the legs, I used to be really slim (size 4 - 6 when I was at university for a while as had issues) but I still had fairly chunky calves. As a size 10, if I want knee high boots, they have to be the wide fit kind.
