Pre Workout snacks?

Hi all,

I'm looking for snack ideas for before a workout. Generally I run either to or from work, or gym at lunchtimes so I have it sort of covered with what Ineat normally. I've just signed up for a boot camp course through after work and am worried about flaking out! Any ideas what I can have that isn't going to cancel out the benefits of boot camping? Generally I have porridge with honey for breakfast, then salmon/chicken/turkey/fish and salad or veg for lunch and dinner so I try not to do mega carbs after breakfast. So, suggestions?

I do bootcamp in the morning so have 20g of muesli mixed with lowfat yog a banana and grated apple :) Lots of water!

Hmm, is that going to be too much like having another unexpected meal though if I have it in time for 6:15pm?

What about a couple of crispbreads/ryebreads/crackers with some cream cheese on?

Or a banana?

It's about the same as having a small cereal bar and some fruit, I'm not sure it amounts to a meal? If you want to eat less than that pre workout then you'd have to consider some fruit or plain vegetables? Lots of water, maybe boiled egg?

Your should be able to do an hour class without needing any snacks as your body will use its glycogen stores, it is more important to be well hydrated so drink plenty of water prior and during the class.

Hmmm, I know you're avoiding cars, but that's what your body needs for a workout. I'd go for something like:

Cereal bar
Fruit/ raisins
Slice of toast with peanut butter
Milk or yoghurt
Babybel and rice cake

and I'd have a chocolate milk afterwards.

MelanieCheeks · 03/06/2013 09:37

Carbs. Of course you avoid cars.

PaperPomPom · 03/06/2013 21:29

Thanks all for the suggestions, especially avoiding cars Wink I can't do an hour after work without a snack first, sometimes I get faint on my way home just travelling if I'm not careful. I went banana as today didn't pan out how I wanted it to so just grabbed something easy!

Unless you are very lean, the whole point of the workout is to burn up what you have round your middle : not to add to it with snacks.

I never eat before going to the gym and have not flaked out yet.

Talkinpeace · 03/06/2013 22:12

How much are you drinking? water is more important than food

PaperPomPom · 03/06/2013 22:54

I know I will flake out at that time of day if I don't have something, hence why I asked as I didn't want that happening in the middle of the session, or on my way home (a 90 minute commute afterwards). If you can make it through then that is great for you, but I know I wouldn't based on my days and journeys that don't have the workout in it. Thank you for your advice though.

I drink a lot of water, generally 2 litres plus during the day at work then more when I come home.

I would do a banana (but you said that didn't work for you) or an apple with either string cheese or a handful of almonds, or small pot of cottage cheese with some berries, or boiled egg.

snoworneahva · 04/06/2013 07:33

A piece of hard cheese or some Parma ham, a few nuts maybe or some berries. Problem is if what you eat has too much volume - you'll feel it when you work out. I can't work out in the evening. Apparently your body will become used to working out in the evening and you'll be more able to cope when your body adjusts.

What about a protein bar or shake? I use the Maxitone ones, they are not too awful?
