Week 1 - Summer Low Carb Bootcamp starts here!

BIWI · 29/04/2013 10:34

Morning all! There are over 150 of us signed up for Bootcamp, so it?s going to be busy I think. If you haven?t already put your name on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness, here is the link so that you can add yourself:

Just add yourself to the bottom of the list and the lovely WillieWaggleDagger, our SpreadsheetMeister, will ensure that it is re-sorted to remain alphabetised. Don?t touch any of the blue columns!
We work in pounds, but if you are a metric person, there?s a tab at the bottom of the spreadsheet that says ?conversion? which will recalculate from metric to imperial.

It?s up to you whether you choose to enter your actual weight or to index it, i.e. you start today at 100, and for every pound you lose you drop by 1.

You will also see on the tabs on the spreadsheet the rules for Bootcamp, as well as rules for those of you who are vegetarian, and rules for Bootcamp Light, which you can move on to after two weeks of Bootcamp.

There are only 10 rules, and the thinking behind Bootcamp is that it should be as straightforward as possible to follow. If you follow the rules (yes, all of them ? and especially no 7!), you will lose weight.

The idea behind Bootcamp is that we have a strict fortnight of low carbing, to break the addiction that we have to carbs and sweet things. You are making sure that you are switching your body from burning carbs to burning fat, and you will go into what is called ketosis in these first two weeks.

All that this means is that you are fat-burning.

In the first few days of low carbing, especially if you haven?t done it before, you may feel a bit rubbish ? you may have headaches or just feel generally tired and achey. This is known as ?carb flu? ? and it means that you are withdrawing from carbohydrates. Sugar (which is essentially how the body views and uses carbs) is highly addictive, and your body will be craving it. Don?t give in! After a couple of days you will feel much better.

If you are feeling odd or ill, make sure that you are getting plenty of sodium, potassium and magnesium. Add salt to your food and cook with salt. Try making a drink from Marmite/Bovril. Good foods to include in your diet are spinach, salmon and avocado. Drink plenty of water and make sure that you really are keeping your fat levels up. Take some paracetamol if you have a headache (not aspirin or ibuprofen as these drugs can impede weight loss).

And tip of the day goes to.....

....Sybil faulty for the gin round the glass pointer! Genius. Grin

B - 2 hard boiled eggs
L - steak salad (poncey not very big one but very nice) at Jamie Oliver's restaurant in Guildford with horseradish, fennel, garlic and chilli. Side order of buttered broccoli.
Snack - olives and salami type sausage in a drinking establishment

1 decaf tea, 2 decaf coffees with cream, 1.5 litres water (will catch up on this this evening)

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 05/05/2013 18:42

I have been extremely grumpy today, to the point that I nearly stomped out the house! Not like me at all, but I hadnt eaten properly until this evening. Been so busy I have picked at various things (good foods) from the fridge.

I have had 1 avocado, some mexican chicken breast slices, 3 slices of port Salut cheese, some sliced chicken (again) 3 slices of chorizo, 1 litre of water.

This evening I did bbq - so had salad, a steak burger (no crap) a piece of chicken thigh, a drumstick and I didnt want anything else.

Im still grumpy and on my third bottle of water. Sad

Yama · 05/05/2013 19:02

I have a tip!

When roasting chicken pieces, pour the fat into a bowl and then use as you would goose/duck fat. In my case, this means adding it to my scrambled eggs in the morning.

Today:

B - Scramled eggs with chicken fat Wink
S - Greek yoghurt and milled flaxseed
L - Sausages and salad
D - Chicken legs and cauliflower bhuna.

sammisatt · 05/05/2013 19:22

Evening all
B: bacon 1 egg
L pork chop creamy leeks
D: went to Byron burger so had bunless burger with cheese and bacon plus green salad ordered courgette fries but they were dipped in flour so had to peel off the coating.

If you are on instagramme you should do a search for lowcarbhighfat as the Scandinavians call this woe. There are photos of anazing low carb meals. Very good for getting inspiration.

CarolBornAMan · 05/05/2013 19:57

Ok i know daily weighing is not good But am p'd off - been angelic all week, saw some good losses upto 5lb by yesterday, weighed today and gained 3!! Wtf! Not totm but how can that happen as am sure did not eat that weight in food.. Trying to keep positive as finding energy is back.. Done 2 days gardening and not felt giddy or hungry as usually do... Maybe gain is solid muscle lol. Going to carry on but maybe i need to cut back dairy as had it twice yesterday.. Damn cottage cheese made me gain!

Deearnamaternitynurse · 05/05/2013 20:06

I have tried registering not sure what im doing wrong but it doesnt show my details can someone guide me

Deearnamaternitynurse · 05/05/2013 20:15

Please can anyone tell me how many carbs i should eat in a day - max allowance excuse questioms im new to this. have to say some of the meals look yum

DangerousMouse · 05/05/2013 20:16

Has something strange happened to the spreadsheet? I can only see about 9 names on it.. Confused

WillieWaggledagger · 05/05/2013 21:08

someone has hidden loads of rows on the spreadsheet. i'm working on getting them back

WillieWaggledagger · 05/05/2013 21:09

please don't make any changes in the spreadsheet for the time being whilst i sort it out

WillieWaggledagger · 05/05/2013 21:18

ok now resolved. please do try to be careful with filters etc, as it can be confusing for others if it's changed. no need to add yourself in alphabetical order - if you're not on there just add to the bottom of the list of names in column A and the order can be sorted out afterwards

deearna, welcome, i have added you

Badvoc · 05/05/2013 21:29

Hello!
I did low carbing last summer.
I lost a stone :)
Which I have kept off, amazingly, as its been a stressful few months :(
Anyway, I am still a stone too heavy and am hoping to lose it this summer. I have a holiday and family wedding to go to!
I am hoping to do low Carb and 5:2 at the same time.
Have any of you done this?

emmief77 · 05/05/2013 21:35

Please can I join? Fairly new to Low carb..

Went shopping today as nothing in my wardrobe fits anymore Sad

Shocked to find I had to go up two dress sizes ...

To be honest I avoid scales and mirrors at all costs.. but I really want to make a change.. So will weigh-in tomorrow morning, if that is ok.?

2712 · 05/05/2013 21:40

Can I just ask about snacking?
I tend not to eat 3 meals a day and just graze. What are the best snacks to eat throughout the day as opposed to cooking a full meal?

Ruprekt · 05/05/2013 21:45

2712.....babybels, ham, chicken pieces, salad, pork scratchings, pepperami are all good snacks.

2712 · 05/05/2013 22:01

Thanks. Can I also ask.....red wine or white?

BIWI · 05/05/2013 22:16

2712

You shouldn't be snacking, to be honest. Why aren't you eating 3 meals a day?

OP posts:
Ruprekt · 05/05/2013 22:19

Oh bother! Caught out by BIWI! Blush

24601.....you should not be snacking!

2712 · 05/05/2013 22:23

Well I hate breakfast, can only face coffee until at least 11am.
And TBH I find mealtimes with my 3 very picky DCs stressful, so I cook, serve then leave them to it
Have also realised that every time I do cook something for myself, as soon as I sit down a child usually comes along wanting something or other. So I find it easier to grab small snacks throughout the day rather than full meals.

BIWI · 05/05/2013 22:30

The trouble is, every time you eat like that, you send your blood sugar levels up. What we're aiming for is to stabilise our blood sugar levels. Which means you should be be aiming for three proper meals a day (at least to start with).

How much do you weigh? How much are you wanting to lose?

I really understand why you eat the way you do, but it's probably not doing you any favours.

OP posts:
decaffwithcream · 05/05/2013 22:32

I get no opportunity to prepare meals some days so I try to keep stuff in the fridge to make a plate for lunch/dinner instead. I put stuff like smoked salmon, avacado, olives, hard boiled eggs and salad with mayo on a plate. Or if I have to eat on the run I bung that sort of stuff in a lunchbox instead.

2712 · 05/05/2013 22:35

Never mind my blood sugar levels......eating a meal with my family sends my blood pressure soaring as it is so stressful. I just don't enjoy eating like that.
The filling the fridge with snacks idea is very appealing.

decaffwithcream · 05/05/2013 22:36

And may I just say, celeriac toast is amazing. (On one of the blogs - you drizzlle olive oil over celeriac slices and bake, just like chips).

I had it with cream cheese and cucumber but plan to experiment with scrambled eggs on "toast" next. Grin
