Slimming club and running or join a gym to lose two stone?

Or should that be two stones?!

Had dd2 nine months ago and still have one and a half to two stone to go. Struggle with tiredness as she is a really truly awful sleeper and up every two hours plus have holder child with sn so life is quite stressful.

I can only afford to join a slimming club or join the gym. Gym is quite reasonable as we would get community rate. It's quite a nice one although I need to check the parking situation. Dh would also join.

Or a slimming club, I have never joined one before but have never struggled this much with weight loss either. Friends have had success with slimming world and weight watchers but I also notice that there is a rosemary Conley class down the road so I could exercise too.

Please help me decide I need to do something!

I don't drink tea or coffee so don't have the milk issue - I've just been straight calorie counting, haven't found it very hard at all yet. I can still have a bit of chocolate if I fancy - just not two bars!! I've been buying Freddos for that complete Cadbury hit in a small package :)

Haven't had any alcohol - I didn't drink that much anyway so that hasn't been hard.....but then it's not exactly a quick win either.

I think just being aware of how much is actually in a portion has helped me. I'm not exactly stupid but didn't realise just how calorific rice in particular was. I've eaten out at least once most weeks and still lost - just been a bit careful.

I have a very sedentary job and work through with no break - often not getting out of my seat at all for 6 straight hours, so the exercise has been the best thing. Into a wee routine with it now - and learning to fidget more and just move about even if I am just standing at the cooker.

That sounds good, I think I have stopped moving as much as am so exhausted by non sleeping baby!

I thought that about carbs, it's free with the slimming world plan I am on I think , even rice which seems mad?

It does seem mad to eat so many carbs but trust it - I lost almost 5 stone in 9 months so it does work really well if you follow it properly just be sure to eat enough free foods (that's why I said to keep a food diary as you can keep track properly then).

onedev · 04/04/2013 22:54

I meant Superfree rather than free, ie vegetables & fruit!!

Beechview · 05/04/2013 08:56

Wow onedev 5 stones. That's amazing.

I have a non sleeping baby too. Shes up 6 times a night and hardly naps in the day. Im finding cal counting difficult at the moment so I'm going to do this for a week and see how I do.

I had 3 big bowls of chick pea curry and rice yesterday! 2 for lunch and one for dinner. It does seem amazing that I can lose weight on that kind of food.

onedev · 05/04/2013 18:52

Thanks Beechview - I had a lot of baby weight to lose!!

It is amazing that you can eat so much but that's why it works so well for me as I love my dinners!! If you think about it though, the majority of what you're eating is healthy & then the 'bad' stuff in moderation so for me it's simply a healthy diet rather than a restrictive diet iyswim!

used2bthin · 06/04/2013 08:31

I think it's great so far although not sure I got enough super free foods yesterday, I am struggling with breakfast as I tend to skip it or have something sweet usually.

Non sleeping babies are very hard work and having older dc home isn't helping but generally I am finding it ok, if a little hard to keep track of. Yesterday I had coffee for breakfast( I know, naughty but I used a lot of my healthy a on having lots of milk) then had carrot soup while out and about with a tiny bit of whole meal bread as gave most to dd2. Only thing was I didn't know how to add in the soup as thought perhaps it had cream in it! Then had an Alpen bar as a snack and did a big thing of egg fried rice and veg with roasted cherry toms (fri lite). Then a muller light. Can't believe muller lights are free!

Ps five stone is amazing, I found hearing the others at the groups weightless motivated me, and hearing on here it is good to know it really works.

Sorry me again, meant to say the exercise is hard with a non sleeper isn't it? Mine is now staying up later at night so we don't get an evening but it does mean she sleeps for a bit of a longer stretch and only wakes/ one or two times so it feels the only way right now as I was going insane with tiredness. It has also given me back enough motivation to tackle the weight, it is so hard as all you want to do is be in survival mode and that means carbs and calories for me!

I always have 2 weetabix for breakfast & then a cup of tea & a banana. I've found bananas, melon & grapes are (almost) as nice as chocolate with a cup of tea, so snack on those during the day in work!

You can have the carbs - just make sure you have the Superfree foods too & you'll be fine!

Can you incorporate the baby into the exercise? Power walking in the park with the pram? It is tough when they're not sleeping but the endorphins released through exercise will make you feel better too (doesn't make up for lack of sleep but can help your mood).

Beechview · 06/04/2013 11:08

I have older kids too and baby is waking up around 6 times a night! I am a bit of a wreck.
Weight loss comes mainly from diet so if you can't fit in exercise at the moment don't stress. Just try to do sit ups and walk up and down stairs.
I usually go for long walks with the buggy but its been freezing.
Another tip is if youre going to be eating out, switch to cal counting for that day and try to stick to around 1500 or less.

used2bthin · 07/04/2013 23:03

Thanks, yes walking is good when dd1 is at school, sadly can't really take them out alone at the minute other than by car to known places due to her sn but am going to try to go for a run every other day when dh gets in this week.

I have gone way over my syncs today as it was an all you can eat buffet thing for lunch, I made the healthiest choices I could but didn't count syns as such. Meant to have none yesterday but ended up with twelve as I had three small glasses (125mls) wine, oops!

It says on the website that 10-15 syns a day should be about right for someone two to three stones over target weight to lose roughly two pounds a week. But I have less than that to lose (1 stone four pounds) so am thinking I probably should be aiming for less syns than that overall. Beech view good tip to count calls sometimes for eating out as lots of places show calories.

One derv very true the exercise does lift mood. I find the holidays hard and am sure lack of exercise doesn't help me with that.

You're right, given you don't have that much to lose, you should be aiming for 10 syns per day. If you stick with 15, you should still lose weight just at a slower rate (likely 1/2 - 1lb per week rather than 2lb) so it's up to you how you do it.

Great you'll be able to go for a run - I'd just say to aim for something that's achievable & stick with it. If you can manage every other day then great, but it does sound a lot & likely for me I'd not be able to stick with it & would give up on it altogether!

Don't worry about what you've fine today, just be 100% on plan tomorrow again & you'll limit the damage. Keep up the good work!

onedev · 07/04/2013 23:36

*done, not fine!

used2bthin · 08/04/2013 05:57

Thanks and will try aiming for ten. Running every other day probably won't happen but hopefully will even out to two to three times a week at very least. It sounds way more impressive than it is as I don't go far and a walk/ run is more like it!

Taking advantage of non sleeping baby to do some middle of the night meal planning!
