Will exercising while dieting really get rid of the excess flabby skin?

Watched bits of This Morning on ITV today was shocked to see a woman who was in BB had lost 7 stone and along with it all the loose flabby skin. No mention of surgery to cut off extra skin, but can it really be tightened up by exercise and leave you with smooth skin instead of wrinkly flabbyness?

i am interested in this I have a wobbly tum, that i need to tone after loosing all my baby weight.

It was a woman called Josie Gibson. I've never heard of her as I don't watch BB (big brother) but I thought I must be hearing it wrong so looked up this morning and checked it out - of course she is selling a dvd showing her working with her personal trainer but if it really is possible I need to know without buying the dvd. Can't be true can it?

I'd love to know how. I've lost 4 stone and have loads of loose skin on my stomach - rest not too bad, bit at the tops of my legs but my stomach is pretty awful and I exercise a lot.

No. Sorry - if you've been very over weight and lose that weight (particularly if it was relatively quickly) then majority of times you will be left with loose skin. Better odds the younger you are however because of more collagen / elastin in the skin

No, it may improve the appearance to a certain extent as your muscle tone up, but excersize won't get rid of loose skin. :(

HeySoulSister · 19/03/2013 15:48

I've lost 3 stone ... No excess skin. Got 2 to go yet

But then I had 5 large babies... Snd not one stretch mark. Think Josie is tall like me. Maybe that's why.

MustTidyUpMustTidyUp · 19/03/2013 16:24

I am a short arse so that doesn't help. Also carry all my weight around the middle, very apple shaped. I image you would have less skin if your weight had been more evenly spread IYKWIM.

MustTidyUpMustTidyUp · 19/03/2013 16:24

Got to say Josie looks bloody good.

ddsmellysocks · 19/03/2013 21:17

Wow to those who have lost stones. I need to loose 3 stones but wondering how my skin will manage. Really can't help thinking was this woman Josie really fat as i simply can't believe it is possible. I'm like her before pictures fat all over middle legs and bum Sad however did I get to this state - don't answer.

I wish :(. I've always been slim but my pregnancy with DD1 left me with saggy skin on my stomach, it didn't get any worse with DD2 but I'm now the same weight as I was Pre DCs but the skin is still there.

Recently I've been doing loads of abdominal crunches and my stomach is definitely getting more toned but the skin isn't reducing :(. It looks better but it definitely won't go!

Talkinpeace · 19/03/2013 22:10

lady I swim with has lost around six stone.
she swims every day, moisturises, does pilates and yoga and now she's getting slimmer, bodycombat and stuff like that
all of her skin is shrinking with her except her tummy (communal changing rooms) and I assume she'll have that removed at some stage

I am slim but because of stretch marks will never have an attractive tummy. so be it.

BikeRunSki · 19/03/2013 22:12

I think so. I find that dieting or exercise alone are not very effective, but together they are very effective. I have recently lost 2.5 stone.

cinnamongreyhound · 19/03/2013 22:44

Lost 5 1/2st last year over 8 months and have flabby skin on tummy, thighs and upper arms. Have maintained since July and my skin is slowly getting tighter but I don't think that's down to exercise. I've had two babies and no stretch marks in either pregnancy so don't know if they're connected.

snoworneahva · 19/03/2013 23:53

Exercising will tone and build muscle, eventually. It does bugger all for toning skin. The skin's ability to bounce back is heriditory IMO.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 20/03/2013 12:16

Once skin loses the elasticity then nothing but surgery will fix it. You can tell what skin that is though, it goes sort of crinkly .

Some people can lose weight and not have any excess skin though but usually if lots and lots of weight is lost then surgery may be required.

PeppaFuckingPig · 20/03/2013 12:22

I went from a size 24 to a size 10/12. I have LOADS of crinkly skin on my tummy (it hangs down like an apron), and my thighs are, quite frankly, hideous.
I'm of the opinion that no amount of exercising is going to tone me up.
