I'm seeing so uch conflicting advice but my situation is
1 I'm a shift worker,sometimes I have meals at work.
2 I am fairly fit, I sometimes go to classes, I cycle and hill wok but have no routine
3 I am 48 and a veggie

I see stuff about low carbing , calorie counting, sw,ww etc. it's a minefield!

For the past week I have psyched myself up to change my eating habits.
I think my downfall is picking. I'm not over fussed about alcohol but I do like a drink when I'm out.
Can anyone help get me started?

Hi dadofnone the following is working for me, albeit slowly (10.5 lbs in 6 weeks so far)

  • plan meals and snack ahead, log your food, I'm using MyFitnessPal
  • really think about what you are eating, make healthy nutritious choices
  • think about long term gratification rather than short term gratification
  • support network, join a thread here and log in when you can
  • work out what's right for you, if you like to "pick" then maybe you would be better off with 6 small meals a day rather than 3
  • eat foods that you like but think about healthier ways to have them e.g. poach your egg rather than fry it and so on.
  • one bad meal/day doesn't mean all your efforts are undone, get back on the horse asap!

Good luck

Thanks for your help. I've just signed up for my fitness app. Going to do the shred before going to work at 12.

Here I go!

If you're a picker (I am too) then MFP is fab. It's a massive wake up call to see just how many extra calories you get through when mindlessly snacking?

If anyone wants any support on MFP come and join the Chiefs .

We're all at different levels, have different amounts to lose and are losing at different rates but were losing! I have to say that I thought weight loss support group type things were a bit cringey but I take it all back. I definitely wouldn't have achieved what I have if I'd been doing it alone.

I'm 2 stone down so far (2 months in) 1 more stone and I'm healthy!

(No idea whe that random question mark came from, good opportunity for an iPad stealth boast though!)

Isabeller · 19/03/2013 10:15

I'm also 48, fairly strong and want to lose 3 stone.

A few years ago I was hovering around the overweight/obese borderline after long steady weight loss but have put on a stone and a half in a year Blush.

Someone was quite persuasive about MyFitnessPal on another thread and I had a look and joined. Its taken a few days to get into it but I think that MFP is going to be a big help. Logging food and exercise on my phone is working better than when I wrote it down and seems to have stopped me picking. I'm also doing a version of C25K to give me a routine - something I've always struggled with.

Good luck Smile

Come join the chiefs Isabeller, the more the merrier.

(I started as obese too. It wasn't a nice realisation)

DoubleMum · 19/03/2013 13:14

Another Chief here, I've lost 22 lbs since some point in January. It makes all the difference to get support from the Chiefs and other MFP friends. I have a long way to go and I need all the help I can get.

It might be tougher for veggies, as protein is a great way to not feel hungry, and it kickstarts your metabolism, so a Full English isn't a bad way to start the day. Still, scrambled egg on toast? But not wholemeal bread, somehow it's too yeasty and cakey like. Grilled tomato, branflakes with milk.

I personally advise relevant vits to keep going. Vit D3 from Holland and Barrett, Chromium from Solgar to ward off sugar cravings, Magnesium to ward off chocolate cravings, Selenium ACE, the latter by Wassen from Boots.

These help to smooth things over. Then, do 3 mins each morning in front of full length mirror with two 1kg dumb bells, stretching mainly. That gets the body more toned, less horrible and obese looking. It's not about weight as such, at this stage, just getting in the right area.

A 10-min/1km run round the block before brekkie when you feel up to it helps more than a long, knackering run too.

Really it's about ditching sugar, which is totally addictive and comes in many guises, and not going hungry, or the body will kick up a fuss and rebel.

I recommend Waist Disposal by John Briffa, it's for men but we're not aliens, same rules apply generally.

Thanks for the tips Professor. I'll have a look at that book.
Cycling shreding running. With a bit of luck I'll get thinner!
