Anyone managed to gradually wean off sugar?

I should be 120 stones, but thankfully I'm not.
I do eat far too much sugar and it seems to be getting worse. I don't think I can go cold turkey, so I need some slightly more healthy snacks to replace my mid morning croissant, afternoon biscuits, pre bedtime cake snacks

salted popcorn

home-baking using xylitol instead of sugar

I make a banana cake with no sugar or fat - no recipe but 3 or 4 very ripe bananas, 2 or 3 eggs and a pile of self-raising sugar baked at 185C for 25-30mins. DS once ate a whole one in one day!

apples are quite low GI

fruit dipped in dark chocolate

vegetable crisps - Tyrells, I think, do nice ones - they taste quite sweet.

Yes, I'm a huge sugar eater or rather I was. I've been following the low gi diet since august and rarely have sugar now at all. I've also dropped the carbs hugely. Don't really feel the need to snack, currently I have a oat cake to keep me going in the avo.

I didn't do it gradually, tbh. I took it one day at a time and ended up having no sugar (except naturally occurring in fruit, etc) for 5 months last year. In the 1st couple of weeks I had loads of dates (but you have to check the back of the packet to make sure no sugar is added!), oatcakes and fruit whenever I had a sugar craving, but after a while I found dates too sweet and only had them very occasionally. Good luck! (I'm back on the sugar now and I think it's time to give it up again...)

I'm a sugar addict too. I'm having some success with the graze boxes as they are measured portions which I savour slowly but I'm also trying to go cold turkey. I might make that banana cake though yum

No, for me it has to be cold turkey.

I couldnt reduce my sugar intake, once I'd get the taste in my mouth, everything with sugar in it would be scoffed....or I'd be tormented by it calling to me. So cold turkey it had to be for me too, I stayed away from sweet substitutes like fruit for the first 2 weeks too because that's the time when you are at your weakest. Started it on Christmas Day - I was that fed up being a slave to sugar. It was hard for a couple of days but no harder than resisting the calls from the cupboard on a daily basis.
My intention is to only eat sugar when we eat out, today is my first attempt at this - we are eating at one of Gordon Ramsey's restaurants and I'm a little nervous my sugar addiction will kick right back in again tomorrow - I have some L-Glutamine powder to help me move past the cravings if they start to kick in.

Have you read any of the books or watched any of the podcasts on the effect of sugar on your body. It's quite compelling and gives you an extra boost of determination to be free from the habit.

Whatever way you tackle it, I wish you luck, being free from the cravings and not being at all tempted to scoff all the dc's sweets is the reward when you kick the habit.
