Week 3 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - Full Fat or Light?

BIWI · 20/01/2013 17:08

So we've completed the hardest part of Bootcamp. Now is the time, if you wish, to relax things a little, and to move on to Bootcamp Light.

On the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness you will - after weighing in, of course - find the rules for Bootcamp Light. However, as I know some people can't access the spreadsheet easily, here they are:

Bootcamp Light

1. Eat when you?re hungry - if you?re not hungry, don?t eat
In Bootcamp, you should have been eating three meals a day. The point of this being to ensure that you got used to eating proper meals, and so that your blood sugar is regulated and stable. Having achieved that, you can now relax this a little bit. If you find you?re not hungry - which often happens, because ketosis suppresses your appetite - then don?t force yourself to eat. But don?t let yourself get so hungry that you make inappropriate choices! Always make sure you have plenty of low carb food to access quickly, if you need to.

2. Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
You may include processed meats like bacon or (low carb) sausages, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, gammon - but please don?t have these at every meal or every day. As well as being highly processed they often contain undesirable ingredients, can add unnecessary extra carbs into your diet, and often include sugar.

3. Eat lots of fat
Eating fat helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet and has too many carbs), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food
This is where the bulk of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat.

Beware that some of the veg on the allowed list can be surprisingly high in carbs once you make up a portion of it ? this is because they are denser, and therefore you tend to use more ? compare, for example, 100g of onion with 100g lettuce! Keep your focus on those veg which contain 3g carbs per 100g and use these as the focus of your meals. Use those over 3g per 100g sparingly.

5. You may eat some dairy
You should aim to include plenty of butter on this WOE. Fry with it and add it to your vegetables. And if you know that dairy doesn?t impede your weight loss you may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

If you?ve been cutting out tea/coffee, you can re-introduce this ? but just be careful how much milk you end up drinking. You can end up adding a lot of extra carbs this way.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
Even if you?re drinking more tea/coffee than in Bootcamp, this is still a non-negotiable part of this WOE. And the more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. Water helps to flush out the ketones that your body will product ? so flushing out the fat. However, drinking this amount of water can affect your electrolyte balance; you need to make sure that you get plenty of sodium, magnesium and potassium. There is less need to worry about restricting salt if you?re eating a low carb diet. Good sources of potassium are salmon and avocado and spinach is a good source of magnesium. You could also consider supplements if you have an issue with this.

7. You may drink some alcohol
But restrict this to once or twice a week max. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine. Absolutely no beer/lager, cider, liqueurs, cocktails or full sugar mixers. You can drink spirits with artificial sweeteners, but bear in mind that we are attempting to avoid all things artificial!

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for your body, and it will use this over and above anything else that is available to it. Therefore, even if you?re following the diet absolutely to the letter, including alcohol can prevent weight loss.

8. You may eat some fruit
Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb are all fine. But please ? only once a day at the very most, and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Just for information ? these are the carb counts:

Rhubarb ? 0.8g carbs per 100g (but don?t forget you will need to sweeten this ? and not with sugar!)
Blackberries ? 4.4g carbs per 100g
Raspberries ? 4.6g carbs per 100g
Strawberries ? 6g carbs per 100g
Blueberries - 6.4g carbs per 100g (although this is a bit controversial - I have had differing carb counts from various sources - some saying as much as 12g carbs per 100g)

9. You may eat some nuts/seeds
Nuts/seeds can make a good snack. BUT it is incredibly easy to overdo it, and you can end up eating your bodyweight in carbs. As an occasional snack they are great, but keep it occasional and keep the portions to a small handful at most.

Macadamias are not only luscious, but they are very low in carbs.

Here are some carb counts ? BUT ? check the back of your packets as I don?t know if these are for raw or roasted nuts:

Pistachios 4.6g carbs per 100g
Macadamias 4.8g carbs per 100g
Pecans 5.8g carbs per 100g
Almonds 6.9g carbs per 100g
Peanuts 7.1 g carbs per 100g
Cashews 18.1g carbs per 100g

10. Avoid artificial sweeteners
The aim of Bootcamp was to help reduce the stranglehold that sugar has on us ? and to curb your sweet tooth. But it does make some things difficult, e.g. desserts at a dinner party, and it is undeniable that it can be enjoyable ? occasionally ? to eat something sweet. However, restrict such goodies. For some people, artificial sweeteners can impede weight loss.

Well, it has been a difficult week in some ways - but I am at the same weight as last week which represents a 9lb overall weight loss.

I can see there have been flaws in my technique which include

  • not drinking enough water most days.
  • drinking more coffee than I strictly should (though I use almond milk and decaf at home mostly)
  • raspberry lapses (4 one day, 8 another day)
  • an incident involving some home made lemon drizzle cake that it would have been too too rude to refuse (and it was yummy, only a very small piece though)
  • lashings of cream, mayonnaise, Boursin. It is great that we are allowed this, and I have not let myself become hungry, but a little more moderation might help with the actual weight loss.

I have some ketone strips somewhere, I could therefore check re the ketosis. I am wondering whether to continue with strict Bootcamp or go to Bootcamp light. We do have a whole punnet of raspberries in the fridge that are very tempting!

PS I haven't been able to locate the spreadsheet to update (though my weight is stable, so not much change really)

All done slatternly

Thank you BIWI.. Some Thanks for you. Am v much novice at all this site stuff but will work out how to do that in a mo.

To all of you craving something crunchy... Check out the recipe thread, I have posted my Dukkah ingredients there. You can adjust spices to your tastes and it is hitting the spot for me... And kept me away from a mahoosive carb laden buffet supper this weekend, tho I did get a few odd looks when I reduced my own plate of feta and a little pot of spicy stuff Grin

Well 2.3 down for me this week. I am slightly disappointed because yesterday I was weighing in at 178.5 and this morning had gone up to 179.75. It means I've lost 5.5lb in around 10 days though (as I only weighed myself from the Thursday) which I suppose isn't a bad loss. I'm hoping that rogue pound will come off again today!! I'm sticking with Bootcamp for now although I may allow myself a glass of Wine at the weekend. I miss wine...

Morning! 3Ibs off for me totalling 11Ibs for the 2 weeks. Marvellous. Went out on Friday night and drank slimline tonic all night - it contained sucralose but lesser of two evils. Can't remember the last time I went to a social event and completely abstained, probably when I was pregnant.

Am not sure what I am going to do this week. I had a decaf cappucino yesterday for the first time in nearly 2 weeks and have had cheese/cream cheese but not in vast quantities. Don't know whether to introduce any fruit yet. Am keeping off the booze for the forseeable.

Good luck to everyone else this week.

Yay! I lost 4lbs this week, so that's 7.5lbs for 2 weeks. Happy days.

Well done everyone!

Sad

Arse - No change here this week, so 4lbs in total over Bootcamp.
I did the fat and the water and the constant ketosis.

But in Good News I have 5 x 200g pots of Total full fat in my fridge Smile

Morning all you lovely losers!

I am 2.5lbs down today, very pleased as this is my second bootcamp and I am within half a stone of my target weight now, and have lost all the xmas gain.

This woe definitely feels more like a lifestyle rather than a "diet" now. Right, off to make a nice eggy brekkie. Have a poorly Ds at home so quiet day for us.

Morning all, and congrats on all fab losses and STS!

I am happy to report I've lost 5.4 pounds this week. Reason being I think due to being very vigilant and doing strict bootcamping after my spectacular falling off of wagon binge the previous weekend.

So I suppose it was really like first week of bootcamp for me, and expecting smaller losses from now on.

Well I have lost 1.5lb this week. Considering that I have had a couple of "cheats" this week - small ones though, Its not too bad. And I have realised that this week unlike the first I have not been drinking nearly enough water, so I will have to up that considerably this week I think and see if it helps.
Well done to everyone else. I'm not jealous of all those larger losses Envy really!Hmm.

For all of those :( over little weight loss in bootcamp, I put on weight over bootcamp admitted cos things were falling head first in disaster but still Also slowly slowly wins this battle. well done to all the losers

I haven't weighed this morning cos i forgot. I have eaten breakfast, had a small cheat for bootcamp (hot squash) but haven't raided the chocolate biscuits for breakfast which was yesterdays breakfast. So going to spend the day drinking water and getting on with stuff that keeps me busy. Also going to try to stay away from the coffee. I find the more i drink the more i want to drink and it becomes a really nasty circle.

Good morning all. Been struggling to keep up with the thread but wanted to say well done to everyone for getting this far. Some amazing losses again.

Only 1lb down for me this week. I was on track for more (obsessional weigher) but I have a nice visit form AF this morning and I think that is probably having an effect.

TBH I'm not too bothered. This WOE is great. I don't feel deprived, I'm loving the food and am not craving carbs at all which is like liberation! Even if I only lose a pound a week, I'll be at my target before summer. I am NEVER going back to self deprivation, cardboard food and self punishment to try to lose weight. BIWI and all you wonderful ladies have shown me the light!

Morning all! Some great losses here, which is fabulous Thanks

Lavendersblue Chocolate peanuts will not have helped you! But I'm more concerned that you say you're hungry. That would suggest that you aren't eating enough and not eating enough fat - which will also not be helping your weight loss. Can you list out for me what you've been eating over the last few days?

BlackAffronted - you have lost 9lbs. That is 18 packs of lard! Please don't you dare be disappointed with that Grin

Taffy - the thing with breakfast is not to treat it like a different meal that requires different kinds of food. Leftovers from dinner the night before can make a great breakfast. Or have a look at the recipe thread for inspiration - asparagus frittata would make a good breakfast. Or just go continental - sliced meats and cheese

Bandersnatch - don't be silly - you haven't let the side down! It's entirely up to you if you want to continue on Bootcamp. It would certainly help re the weight loss because it will make sure that you are in ketosis and are therefore fat-burning, which is what we're trying to achieve. But if you find it too restrictive, you can move to Bootcamp Light - just be careful you don't suddenly add in masses of carbs as that will really derail you and the weight will go straight back on

Ruprekt Thanks fab!

Iamaslummymummy - I don't know about flax as it's something I've never used/bought. Why are you considering it?

slatternly - there would be issues with eating a lot of bacon from the point of view of additives/ingredients, but I can't see that it would have caused a problem with weight gain. More importantly, though, you talk about your small loss. But according to the SOF you have lost 12lbs! In whose book is that a small loss? Grin

catinboots - well done for managing the paella!

gloria Thanks brilliant

herecomesthesun - entirely up to you if you want to continue with Bootcamp or move on to Bootcamp Light. 9lbs is a fabulous loss, so Thanks But don't bother with the ketostix - a waste of money! If you are keeping the carbs down, you will be in ketosis.

Penny - fabulous! But don't despair - you are weighing daily, and this is something you have to accept with daily weighing. Your body weight fluctuates quite naturally and sometimes it will go up, for no apparent reason. If you can't accept that without it upsetting you, then stop weighing every day!

carbalanche Thanks fab!

Lucy also Thanks

Pistey you haven't got masses to lose, so you were never going to see a huge amount. Just keep on keeping on! (But don't eat that yoghurt all in one go ...)

Novelty - yay!

For me, I slept in this morning and was woken by a delivery man ringing the doorbell. I was so discombobulated by it all I dived straight into the coffee before weighing, so will have to weigh-in tomorrow.

But you need to take all the comments I have made on board, and start eating properly.

I totally agree with Platoon about this WOE... I haven't been feeling hungry or been tempted to snack on bad foods during these last couple of weeks which is a good thing. And BIWI you are, as always, the voice of reason and completely right! I do need to take the natural fluctuations in my weight if I choose to weigh myself every morning. I am pleased that I've lost the weight I have and my stomach is looking so much flatter than it has done for a long time which I guess means I've lost some carb bloating from round my middle. This is good Grin.

Well done everyone on your losses. We can do this!

I have constipation problems from the drugs I take and my gynaecologist has said I mustn't let it be a problem again. Scared that even with the magnesium I take that it might start to be a problem given the carb reduction.

I tried Ewan's cream cheese pancake recipe that she posted yesterday. OH MY GOD - they are amazing! I did put some sweetener into them (hids from BIWI's stick) and also chopped up 2 strawberries to go on top.

After 3 weeks of no fruit and very limited sugar the strawberries tasted like the sweetest thing in the world, it was incredible!
