Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 07:40

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Thanks biwi!

GibbsGirl · 07/01/2013 12:36

Wow - thanks BIWI and thanks BlackAffronted - think that might also be the safer option!

halfthesize · 07/01/2013 12:37

Wow this is such a busy thread, we(BIWI'S LOW CARB ARMY) will be taking over the nation soonWink

Boobz · 07/01/2013 12:37

Isn't it exciting to start a brand new thread with everyone being so excited and determined! I love it! Such good energy .

Right, I weighed in at 113lbs this morning, which I believe is what I have plateaued at for the past few weeks. Willi - is there any chance you can add my "old" details in columns D, E and F? I've tried doing it myself but it doesn't seem to be working. I started on Oct 1st at 129.6 - thanks!

Like Dosh, I only took a couple of days off over Christmas (the day itself and Boxing Day) but would still like to lose these last 3 pesky lbs to get down to target of 110 (I am short).

Good luck everyone!

AuntieMaggie · 07/01/2013 12:37

Just marking my place....

NoelHeadbands · 07/01/2013 12:40

Thank you Thanks

Doshusallie · 07/01/2013 12:45

PMSL at Mumat39 being Dory from Finding Nemo with a column C song. I can see a name change coming on Mum. Grin

Lunch = fridge contents on a plate. Coleslaw, raw mushrooms, an obscenely large chunk of stilton, cucumber, boiled egg, pate. Yum.

ToomuchWaternotWine · 07/01/2013 12:47

Just watched biwi video link to the Dr Eenfeldt lecture on YouTube, it is really inspiring. I may try to get DH to watch it, as he keeps "joking" about me being slimmer but having a heart attack instead Hmm

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 12:47

NoelHeadbands LOL at Tsars! Maybe we should have a LC Tsar?! Grin

You've done this before. You know it works. And if you're producing ketones, then you are burning fat.

Don't panic!

Have you taken your measurements as well as getting on the scales? It is a funny thing how our measurements can change even though the scales don't, sometimes.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 07/01/2013 12:50

Am I on the right thread Hmm

Lunchtime!

Bought the stuff to make some of the soups of the recipe thread. I shall give one of those a whirl.

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 12:53

Yes, a big thank you to whoever linked to that video in the first place. Sorry I can't remember who it was Blush but there are so many of us!

TomHardysPinky I really, really, really think that should be brave and get on to the scales. Otherwise you won't have any idea of how brilliantly you will have done, when you weigh next Monday!

Seriously - not weighing is a form of denial, and allows you to be less committed to the process.

You don't have to tell us what it is.

Gwan ... Grin

Afternoon all

4lbs up at Xmas but 2lbs shifted last week. Only 9lbs to go to reach the target I set myself 51 weeks ago Grin

Biscuit there is a recipe for tuna pate on the recipe thread which haas exactly the same ingredients as the Waitrose one you described, but is obviously cheaper to make yourself.

I don't usually post my meals but:
Breakfast - ham and cheese
Lunch - homemade cauliflour cheese (which was bloody gorgeous)
Dinner - chicken salad with a huge dollop of mayo

Sainsbo's have Young's white fish fillets for £3 instead of £6 in the freezer cabinet.

WRT the discussion at the beginning of this thread about the video - I haven't watched it yet because I am at work, but I am convinced that sugar is the real culprit in the obesity crisis because it is so bloody addictive. Over Christmas I had the occasional roastie or piece of bread and was fine. Once I started on the cake/chocs I was ready to eat my own hand off after about half an hour!!

Sugar is evil. FACT Grin

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 07/01/2013 12:56

Scrambled eggs and smoked salmon for lunch Smile

Have drunk 2 litres of water already!

Rooobs · 07/01/2013 12:58

Blimey, it's crowded in here! Grin

I've been thinking a lot about the psychology of eating and dieting as there are such powerful emotional associations with food for so many people that will affect how we get on with any WOE. I'm trying to untangle some of the emotions from my eating and understand what's going on for me.

Anyhoo, this has struck a chord with me:

learning how to think, "oh well..." and move on.

As in, I'd really like some pasta, "oh well..."

or I'm craving chocolate, "oh well..."

Allowing myself to experience that regret at not being able to have something, but then moving, on instead of dwelling/obsessing on it or thinking "SOD IT! I'll have it anyway!"

What I'm learning is that cravings pass. And even hunger pangs come and go, so if I can't get some suitable food (which I can't when at uni it's just AWFUL for catering and I'm not spending £2.50 to eat a slice of ham out of a shit sandwich!) then I'll live if I have to wait until I get home.

Rooobs · 07/01/2013 13:02

oh and

B: chicken breast and mayo and salt. SOMEBODY ate all the eggs! Shock
L: chorizo and leaves
D: have got a lamb stew slow cooking in the oven, served with green beans and kale.

and writing that, I've just realised I sloshed a load of red wine into the stew without thinking. DOH!

clare8allthepies · 07/01/2013 13:03

Wow so many of us! Just had a huge ham salad for lunch, burger and cheesy leeks for dinner - yum!

Lastyearsmodel · 07/01/2013 13:08

So... DP took the scales to weigh a big parcel and he can't sodding find them. I am quite cross because I sort of started last week but can't tell if I'm losing! Will get on to him about it tonight. Shy about telling people I'm doing anything about my weight, so feel uncomfortable going on about the scales. Daft, I know. I shall take measurements later so at least I can have something to go on. Have entered weight as 100 for now.

Never low-carbed before so this is a HUGE learning curve for me. I am very reliant on carbs and emotional eating has been making me miserable so I spent last week avoiding the carbs I knew about and trying some of the recipes. Also learning how to cook for the family and not trip up. And ignoring urge to eat something sweet after every savoury thing.

So far, I had a headache on the 2nd day, don't think I've had carb flu or bad breath, but that could be because I've slipped up a few times on my trial run week. Does, for example, a slice of toast take you out of ketosis and bugger everything up?

Have been focussing on just avoiding carbs and eating protein and fat and low carb vegetables. Should I pay attention to portion sizes or just eat when I'm hungry until I'm full?

My appetite has been a lot more stable, as, I think, has my mood (difficult to be certain).

And what can I add to the Total Greek yoghurt? Just that bit too plain for me without honey...

prettybird · 07/01/2013 13:09

Have just added my weight to the Spreadsheet of My Shame Fabulousness Blush

I then scurried off to drink some more water, realising I was in the higher category of water consumption.

Just about to have some lunch. Smoked Salmon and Avocado with some salad on the side. Then I'll make dinner: a low carb shepherd's pie, using cauliflower and turnip and egg for the "mash".

ToomuchWaternotWine · 07/01/2013 13:09

Actually feel like picketing my local Weight Watchers now with placards saying "join us!! Low carb works!!"

GuyMartinsSideburns · 07/01/2013 13:14

I cant keep away from this thread Smile you're all really helping me so thank you. Before Id always low carbed by myself but knowing that all you lot are doing it alongside me is really helpful and encouraging.

We had a roast chicken yesterday so this morning I simmered the remains of that for a couple of hours, and Ive just finished making it into a stew. There are carrots in it but I figured I can dish mine up without any. Kids and dh will have bread and butter with theirs, I may have a little something after if Im still peckish.

Right now the thought of meal planning incorporating everything in is really daunting. You all sound like such accomplished cooks! I need to come up with a load of ideas that will get me and my family through the week, as often Id have something different instead as this was easier (though got boring and unfulfilling) and this is where Id lose heart and give up. I'll have to have a proper go through the recipe thread when I feel more capable of being able to do it. Confused

TooImmatureMincePies · 07/01/2013 13:15

At work and there is an unbelievable amount of confectionary lying around the place - think whole tins of biscuits. Have remained strong so far apart from a bit of semi-skimmed milk in a cup of tea, but only one!

GuyMartinsSideburns · 07/01/2013 13:15

Forgot to mention - my arms are really shaky today, whats that all about? Feels very similar to that tingly feeling Id get during a panic attack, if anyone is familiar with that.

TinTinsSexySister · 07/01/2013 13:21

Weighed this morning and I put on 5lbs over Christmas and New Year Shock

So, day one here and so far, so good. I wasn't hungry at breakfast time but had a babybel and some cucumber. Lunch was two hard boiled eggs mashed with butter and a pile of spinach. Dinner will be IPD beef stew with swede mash I think.

1.5 litres of water in, 1.5 to go...
