Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 07:40

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Ditto ( & thanks to biwi ditto!)

Weighed in this morning - 11 stone 2, pretty much the heaviest I've ever been. Have put on nearly a stone since the summer . I would really like to get back to my 'fighting' weight of 9 stone 7 (can't believe I used to think that was fat when I was younger, it seems impossibly slim now!)

Really looking forwards to this diet though - after being properly vegetarian for years I have started eating a bit of fish again after reading Briffa's book. Am feeling a bit guilty about it but hoping the health benefits will make up for it!

Greek yoghurt for breakfast (with blueberries, didn't realise about the fruit thing but won't buy any more after these are used up)
Lunch - smoked salmon with green salad & avocado
Dinner - omelette & buttered green veg with a tiny sprinkling of feta

WillieWaggledagger · 07/01/2013 11:26

ah well ewan in that spirit:

breakfast: scrambled eggs with butter and parsley

lunch: tuna mayonnaise (tinned tuna in olive oil; full fat hellman's) with cucumber and lettuce

supper: moussaka (idiot-proof diet recipe more or less, i cook it quite frequently so don't look at the recipe any more so i have probably simplified it) with salad (dressed with olive oil, white wine vinegar and dijon mustard vinaigrette)

about 3.5L water

Doshusallie · 07/01/2013 11:26

Tom - I use Hellmans full fat mayo. Yes, plain full fat greek yoghurt, Lidl's is great, or Total full fat. Flavour with vanilla essence if you like.

Slatternly could make a fish pie with a swede or celeriac topping?

Stylelostinlabour · 07/01/2013 11:26

Running in to say morning everyone.

Day 5 for me and realised over the weekend i haven't been drinking enough water as haven't lost or poo'd (sorry for the over sharing...) since Friday.

Back into to work today so drinking it easier.

B Greek Yoghurt, Babybel
L Roast Chicken, Cucumber and Celery, Babybel
S Two boiled eggs

D Hahairy bikers skinny lasagna with onions swopped for shallots and lowest carb tomatotoes and no wine and swopped the cheese sauce for Lo Carb version

hopefully this is OK?

slatternlymother · 07/01/2013 11:27

Oh, BIWI someone wrote on another thread that balsamic vingegar is bad, so I thought 'bugger it, it's a minefield, I'll not bother' and left it Blush I will get DH to pick up some full fat mayo though; Helmanns regular mayo is good, right? I'll definately do the beans tonight in butter though.

Oh, another thing. You know those Maggi 'So Juicy' shake and bake type things that you put with chicken etc? Can I have those? Or am I best to avoid?

TooMuchWaternotWine very inspiring name change Smile

TomHardysPinky · 07/01/2013 11:28

halfthesize · 07/01/2013 11:28

slatternlymother · 07/01/2013 11:29

BABYBEL! I CAN HAVE BABYBEL!

TomHardysPinky · 07/01/2013 11:30

I don't know if I want to weigh in :(

i was 12stone 2 before xmas, im too scared,

i might just not weigh. just do this and see in a months time whats going down on the scales?

Willowisp · 07/01/2013 11:30

I tried having 1/2 avocado with some creme fraiche for breakfast & it was vile...too dry for my liking. I've been doing this since October so have fiddled around to something that suits me, keeps my energy up & allows me to have a good roast dinner + pudding on a Sunday.

Its not allowed on bootcamp, I think it's ok for light ? Anyway, I make the dukan galette for my brekkie. It keeps me full until gone lunchtime & stops me thinking of food.

The galette has some carbs, but is a great source of fibre & apparently the oatbran, just sort of clears you out so you (I) don't get constipated.

For tea I'm having soup as on Mondays I usually do a 'fast' the one that's 500's a day.

The rest of the week I have the same brekkie, then a babybel for a snack, salmond/fish/last nights protein leftovers + low carb veg.

Then whatever I make for the family, but substitute rice/pasta for cauliflower 'rice', mashed swede (with butter/cream), usually throw in 1/2 avocado.

Have bought the India Knight book & am starting to cook a few of her recipes.

Once you get through the pain of low carb, as others said, you workout what suits you & then of course it makes it easier to stick to.

I had a moment last week where I felt it would be nice to have a massive scoff of chocolate..well it wasn't nice at all ! I literally couldn't be bothered !

I've got keto sticks, but, being so lazy, I can never be bothered to use them & as BIWI says, they don't always work, so you can get a bit disillusioned.

halfthesize · 07/01/2013 11:30

Tom No to fizzy drinks.

WillieWaggledagger · 07/01/2013 11:31

i think i have done everything to the spreadsheet that people have asked for so far but let me know if i've missed anything

right, back to work!

GrandmaHasTheMoozles · 07/01/2013 11:32

That should have said 222lb! And I am 5'2" and a size 20.

What an embarressing typo!

halfthesize · 07/01/2013 11:32

Willie the spreadsheet looks fab, well done and a massive thankyou Thanks

JustinMumsnot · 07/01/2013 11:32

OH MY FREAKING GOD. I put back 12lb over two weeks of wildly undisciplined eating over Christmas. 12lb!!!! All that hard work gone in a fortnight. Right, onward and upwards. Ladies, I am never dropping off the wagon again. It's my birthday in 7 weeks - I will lose it all by then - and a bit more!

Willowisp · 07/01/2013 11:33

slatternlymother you just need to look at the back of the pack & as I tell DM, if it's more than 5g carb per 100g, keep away.

If you want flavour use chillies/coriander/cajun spice.

JustinMumsnot · 07/01/2013 11:35

Thanks so much Willie for doing all this for us. The spreadsheet is a marvel.
Welcome to all the new bootcampers. BIWI has been such an inspiration to me over the last few months. I will be wearing a size 10 bikini this August - no more dropping off the wagon for me.

slatternlymother · 07/01/2013 11:35

tom I need to weigh in too love. Come on, hold my hand and we'll both do it tonight. I'm going to be about 12st 12lbs ish I think, I was 12st 2lbs before Christmas as well. It's nothing to be ashamed of you know, it's hardly your fault the medical profession have been pointing us all in the wrong direction with the whole time is it?

EwanHoozami · 07/01/2013 11:35

slatternly I cook the cauli in the microwave without water and then mash it with some double cream. This is a pretty good substitute for the mashed potatoes in fish cakes as it isn't as watery as cauli that's been boiled and mashed. They're still a bit looser than standard fishcakes but taste pretty good.

slatternlymother · 07/01/2013 11:37

Thankyou Willow, I will check tonight. I think it's all just herbs and spices, but it's worth knowing.

ToomuchWaternotWine · 07/01/2013 11:37
Ruprekt · 07/01/2013 11:37

Just bumping a little

slatternlymother · 07/01/2013 11:39

ewan I don't have a microwave, but I suppose it could bake it in the oven and then mash and the results would be similar?

Thankyou so much to everyone who's helping me btw, I'm sure I must be wearing your patience with all these innane questions!

mumat39 · 07/01/2013 11:40

Thanks BIWI. I'm not actually thinking of tis as a competition. Just wanted to make sure I'm doing this properly. :)

Willie, is there anyway of freezing the frames like in excel? I am like a goldfish and even tough I try and remember which column I should use, I still forget by the time I get to my row. Thanks again for all your amazing spreadsheeting.

Xxx

FallingOver · 07/01/2013 11:40

Thanks to Willie for a fantastic job on the spreadsheet.

I weighed in this morning at 128lbs, and am hoping to lose about half a stone or so to get me back to what I consider my fighting weight, and do it without starving myself after a year of v difficult food issues. I'm going for my first session with my local running club this evening, have signed up for a Pilates class, so will hopefully be toned as well as slim!

My pre-bootcamp attempts failed miserably yesterday, as I had to stay up v late for a deadline and fuelled myself till 3am with sugary crap. Feel v sluggish, bloated and with tummy ache this morning so I'm looking forward to cutting all that gunk out.

B - herbal tea, and currently drinking black coffee.
L - leftover courgette and mushroom frittata
D - smoked salmon salad.
