I have just weighed myself and I am 17 stone. I am 5'7 and usually an 18/20 (although can be a 22)

Clearly I need to lose some weigh. Can anyone suggest a tried and tested method/diet they recommend?

Eat less
Exercise more

That's it

If you have a bad diet try changing it and do exercise. Its hard to lose weight but have to stick at it.Im trying to but its not easy.Ive lost just over a stone so far and taken me many weeks! Smile.Good luck.

Stylish · 01/04/2006 23:17

Moondog I take it you are a skinny minny. That advice is easily said, but harder to do.

I'm not out for a quick fix. I am looking for a diet or something to help kick start the weightloss ALONG side exercise.

No I'm not.
I am 5 ft 7 and normally a size 12,but it has taken me a lot of discipline to get back to this after the birth of my son 21 mths ago.
I love food, and I could drink for Wales but I like looking presentable even more.
Smile
Seriously,there are no easy fixes.

Try the GI diet - Rosemary conley is good (there is a keep fit class after the weigh in which is great). She has a website. I haven't felt hungry on this plan at all. Lots of good healthy food, no fats, ie no no butter on bread or when cooking. Go for it, I lost 5lb in two weeks. Easy to include the whole family so you're not cooking separate meals too.

ma2cra · 01/04/2006 23:24

It is the best way to lose weight though.

Diets work for the duration, but then the weight can pile back on if you don't change your eating habits too.

Since Christmas I've lost just over a stone by upping my exercise levels (from zilch to be honest and I'm only walking and using an exercise bike) and by trying to eat more healthily (and being conscious of what I eat).

It's slower then sticking to a strict diet, but hopefully it will stay off because I'm trying to be more sensible about the whole thing.

It's damned hard work, but this approach is working for me, and I can see me maintaining this lifestyle too.

Keeping a food diary might help.

katyrocks · 02/04/2006 22:23

please can i join you? i know what I'm supposed to eat, I know how to cook it, i know how much exercise to take, i go to the gym 4 times a week, i know the nutritional value of everything and i know how to lose weight.

So why am I still lumpy and bumpy and 2 stone overweight???? because i like feta cheese, strawberry ice cream, vodka tonic etc etc toooooooo much Grin and have zero will power

Stylish would you like to do some mutual support stuff? the others are right, it is damned hard work but its easier if you're not doing it alone!

Ignore the slim people. Even those who work at it don't understand.

I vary between 12stone and 18 stone and have lost 3 stone plus many times. Losing weight is easy - it really is once you have the right mind set. Without it it is impossible. The main problem is maintaining the weight loss. However at the moment you want to lose weight.

I am currently doing Lighter Life - it is expensive and extreme but it works. A less extreme version is called the cambridge diet and it is cheaper. If you do either of these you will lose weight quickly. I've lost 3stone in 3 months and am aiming to lose another 1-2 stone in he next 6 weeks.

I am 5st 7" and weighted 17st 11lbs when I started (pretty much identical to you). I was also a size 22 most times though could also be a 20.

I am now a size 16/18 and falling. I do know that the real challenge starts when I want to come off the diet and start maintianing my weight but I'm hopeful this time that I can do it.

BTW I've lost weight the 'sensible way and slowly several times before too and it made no difference to my ability to keep it off so I figured let's lose the weight quickly and then start the real work of maintenance. My problem in the past was that normal diets are so slow that after 6-8 months I get really bored.

ProfYaffle · 03/04/2006 15:01

Lazycow is right about the mindset thing, I can only lose weight once I've had this weird mental 'click' that makes me go 'right, now I can do it'.

I find WeightWatchers works for me. It's very flexible and you can usually work out a way to incorporate some version of your favourite food. It also incentivises exercise as you get extra points for exercise. If I'm hungry and short of points I'll do my Davina dvd, hey preto, 2.5 extra points!

sanchpanch · 03/04/2006 15:10

I was 17 stone in june last year, and have lost 4 stone by eating healthy (boring) i now havent lost sine xmas, so today i started on the cambridge diet, which is meal replacement, shakes, soups and bars(see the other thread) i and i am hoping to lose another 2.5 stone by june....

NotActuallyAMum · 03/04/2006 15:19

Agree with lazycow and ProfYaffle - in fact ProfYaffle took the words right out of my mouth about the weird mental 'click'

Have you tried Slimming World? I never actually went to a class but I once lost over 3 stone after buying the magazine and sending off for some of the books for sale in there. I don't have them any more unfortunately, otherwise you could have had them

btw if it's any consolation you're certainly not on your own - in June 2003 I was 15.5 stone. By December of the same year I was down to 9.5. I'm now back up to 16 stone and, like you, have decided to do something about it Smile

schneebly · 03/04/2006 15:30

slimming world is good - not extreme but good weight loss and you are not restriced with portion sizes really. I am a bit shorter and lighter than you stylish but similar size and have lost weight in the past but when the pnd kicked in so did the eating! I am going to see about the pnd this week and re-join SW next week and will be walking more now that the weather is better. Good luck - I will keep up with this thread if you want to talk!

tangerinecath · 03/04/2006 16:22

I have done slimming world in the past and lost 2.5 stone - great but when I stopped doing it the weight piled straight back on. Nothing do to with the diet imo, just my complete lack of willpower when no-one is standing over me saying "you can eat that, you can't eat that". I should really do it again but can't find enough enthusiasm to cook one meal for me, another for dh and another for dd.

If anyone wants the book, CAT me and I'll send it to you.

Stylish · 03/04/2006 23:37

Wow thanks for all the messages guys.

Katyrocks, Lazycow, ProfYaffle etc, THANKS for the messages. You all seem to have a more similar mindset to me.

Lazycow- how expensive is the Lighterlife thing?

Stylish

OP posts:
lazycow · 05/04/2006 10:37

Lighter Life costs £66 a week which I think is a bit of a rip off ttbh but I'm doing so well on it I'm sticking to it for my full 100 days. there is a website www.lighterlife.com if you want to know more and there is also quite big thread on this in the weight loss section. I can't do links - sorry

If I was starting again I'd do the Cambridge Diet as it is almost identical and cheaper (there is also a thread on this) and the website is www.cambridge-diet.com

The lighter Life programme offers counselling however my group councellor is lovely but is pretty useless at the therapy stuff. That may vary by counsellor though.
