Im trying to lose weight and I've developed a taste for Alpen, the one contains raisins.

It appears to be a 'good' cereal but i want verfication please!

What's the sugar content and have you carefully weighed your usual serving?

As to good or bad.... there are better breakfasts to be eaten just as there are far worse ones. It really depends on how this cereal 'fits' into the rest of your nutritional plan and what your goals are.

Well I used to have a bacon or sausage sandwich do I guess it's an improvement!

Can you tell me though, what is a good breakfast? By that I mean, filling, but with a low fat content. I will need a bit of carb in the morning to give me energy.

I think it tastes a lot sweeter thn lots of other mueslis, incl own-brand ones
can you buy the oats, nuts and raisins and mix your own?
eat porridge with raisins/other fruit instead? would probably be cheaper, too

It does contain a lot of sugar. Far too sweet for my liking.

I wouldmake sure you weigh out your portion - it is surprising how many calories are in a small amount.

Porridge oats made with water are possibly one of the better breakfast cereals to choose. But again, weigh out the oats first to calculate the calories.

I've started having scrammbled egg for breakfast. When someone suggested it I honesly didn't think two eggs and a bit of milk would keep me going to lunch time (especially as a former carbs addict) but it does. You could always try it and if it isn't enough add a slice of wholemeal toast?

Alpen is very high in calories for a tiny little bowl!!

teaandthorazine · 11/09/2012 12:02

Full of sugar.

Bacon and sausage is fine if you lose the bread btw Grin. A protein-rich breakfast (eggs scrambled with butter, bacon, sausage etc) will keep you going much longer than a bowl of cereal (and I speak as a former muesli-lover). Or what about full-fat yoghurt and berries?

MrsBitchArseUsedToBeBran · 11/09/2012 12:03

The no added sugar Alpen is a bit lower in calories, and is still quite sweet from the dried fruit. I can't eat the regular version as it tastes far too sweet for me.

Porridge oats with natural yoghurt and grated apple is delicious. It needs to sit for about 10 mins before you eat it for the oats to soften, or you can make up a bowl the night before and leave it in the fridge.

Its not good high in sugar and carbs, not forgetting dried fruit contains natural sugar too.

Try granola, as natural as possible, I get mine from M&S or Sainsburys its expensive so I mix with own brand 'all bran' (low GI) Plenty of fibre and I find it fills me up without the sweetness. If you need weaning off sugar then try Agave its like honey but without the carbs - much better for you and works in yogurts.

As usual, it depends. The sugar free one isn't too bad but is packed with calories, the 'original' Alpen has almost as much sugar as coco pops but somehow manages to retain a 'healthy cereal' reputation
