Low carbers - please answer my stupid question!

Is Gluten free stuff low carb?
Can I eat gluten free pasta/bread etc as part of a low carb diet?

Also, if I follow a low carb diet, can I still cook my veg/protein in butter and have full fat yoghurts/cream/cheese? Should I still avoid buying low fat stuff? I've followed so many different diets over the years that I'm getting confused. It goes against everything I've ever known to buy full fat stuff. I guess the question is, if I low carb (not no carb) will it work if I eat full fat stuff too, or should I just low carb and have low fat stuff like cheese?
Thanks

Someone will come along shortly who is more knowledgeable then me but until then...
No gluten free isn't carb free. Sometimes it's more carby then normal stuff.

Yes full fat. Lots of fat. Butter yes.

Have a look at the Bootcamp thread loads of information and support there.

Thanks hazchem, but will eating full fat stuff be ok if I am only low carbing instead of no carbing? I'm not sure I can be arsed to count carbs to be honest, I was just gonna try to stick to eating proteins and limited veg (no fruit etc)

The fat is what keeps you full you will need it. Also anything that is low fat is higher carbs. Eg skim milk has more sugars in it then whole milk or double cream. So you can stop having skim milk in your morning coffee and have cream instead.

Where I think you have to be careful is having a medium carb high fat diet so stopping pasta and bread but still eating rice and potatoes and also having full fat stuff.

All of the famous low carb diets and the ones that are followed here are LOW carb, not NO carb. It's a misconception that this way of eating means giving up all carb intake entirely. But the carbs you do eat should come from veg (and maybe small amounts of nuts etc). The Bootcamp threads don't count carbs but most people are probably losing weight at between 20-40g of carbs per day, for example. If you eat the right foods then you'll naturally settle in this range without having to actually count carb grams!

As for fat, yes you must eat full fat. This is what your body will run on, this is what is effectively replacing the carb energy in your diet. It's essential to keep your fat levels high if you are eating low carb bolts it's really GOOD for you! Fat is not the enemy. Being scared of eating fat is what's made us all overweight in the first place. To eat low carb effectively you must forget everything you've ever been taught about fat in the diet Smile

Dont eat gluten free. Its not low carb. After a short while on low carb you'll lose the taste for bread, pasta etc anyway.

I never lost the taste for carby foods Sad cravings yes, but not the taste - bread still smells amazing.

Low fat products like yoghurts, coleslaw, cottage cheese etc apparently have carb heavy 'fillers' added to them. That's why they are not low carb.

So full fat only!

Ok, well thanks all for the replies, I think it's gonna take me awhile to get my head around this as all the diets I've ever done in the past have drummed into me that I must eat low fat, skimmed milk, no red meat, etc. Need to do some serious meal planning I think

Some gluten free stuff can be lower carbs - sausages are a good example. Means they're more likely to be a much higher meat percentage.

Other stuff though, not so much.
