After yet another weekend of not being able to stop myself from scoffing all the kids sweets and actually all of my sons birthday cake (am v ashamed of this actually). I think I am going to have to step away from sugar altogether. I'm just not one of those people who can enjoy one or two biscuits or sweets and then forget about them. I always have to finish the whole packet and then search for more. So I was hoping someone more knowledgable than me would come along and give me some advice. Are there any good books about giving up sugar or any diet plans I could follow? Thanks in advance :)

You are not alone - it is if I give myself a bit of sugar I just stir up the impulse to eat it all! I am a compulsive biscuit/ cake/ choc craver. I NEED it...

I am however on day 3 of my diet ( again) and am starting to struggle. I got given a box of chocs as a gift yesterday and I am getting palpitations looking at them! I have about 2-2.5 stone to lose...

I'm the same, 3 ice-creams no less, 6 biscuits or it's not enough etc. So it's easier for me to have none. I don't know of any good books, I just decided to avoid sugar whenever possible. I still eat baked beans and occasionally some biscuits though because I don't think I can stop sugar for ever and I think if I stop if for a while and then have some my body will start getting even fatter. Well, my opinion only :) I have honey (1 teaspoon) in coffee and more milky tea to make it taste sweet. I also have fruit and veg which are naturally sweet.

Thanks for your replies - it's nice to know that it's not just me! My DH doesn't really understand why I can't just just stop after one or two sweets etc but I just can't. It doesn't help that he works for a chocolate manufacturer so there is ALWAYS confectionary lying around! youcanringmybell, I know exactly how you feel about your box of chocolates, - they seem to call to me! I'm thinking of having some hypnotherapy because I am really fed up with how this 'addiction' is making me feel.

I am starting running again soon though. I used to run 2 miles everyday but then the kids broke up for summer. Roll on next week and I can get back to it.

Yes I need some too! Can't wait for normal service to resume after the hols and I can hit the gym again! Am trying to summon up some motivation to go for a run now but it's hard easier to veg on sofa and watch corrie

Cath, my Dh has this same problem. I don't, and I have to just not buy/make anything that he can't stop eating. I thought I could have a few snacks around and police him, but I have finally realized (it took a good year) that I have to be part of his solution and not enable him to even have access to these foods.

it's a bit of a bummer for me, but as I don't need more than one or two treats, i just keep them at work for me.

I have a lot of sympathy for you all! Do get your partners engeged in helping you too, because not making the suggestion to go for treats can help. I want my Dh to be happy and healthy and so I don't buy or make treats.

Oh well done! I have never, ever done that either! You definitely deserve this! Wine I've ordered that book, the idiot proof diet, pig to twig, as I've heard it's a good intro to low carbing which is apparently the best way to beat sugar cravings! Let's hope so - although I hope it doesn't involve me having to cook separate meals for myself. That would be too much like hard work :)

monsterchild yes your right i need to get DH on board but to be honest he is always having to listen to my next hairbrained scheme or project so I think I'm going to have to proove that I'm really serious about this one. I think that if I lived by myself it would be easier because I just wouldn't need to buy the sugary snacks but I feel a bit mean not buying them for my family. Maybe I should buy a huge padlock and chain to keep myself out of the biscuit tin!

Go for it. It really makes a difference even if you don't eliminate sugar but reduce it. I've stopped adding sugar to my coffee and tea and it helped me loose some weight. i still need to loose more but it's helping that I could loose some. I have sugar when I'm having baked beans and some other foods and sugar is already there...
