Hi,

I lost around 4.5 stone over the last year. Although my BMI is now ok I need

to lose more as I have a small frame & still lots of padding around my middle!

As I am addicted to carbs I was wondering if John Briffa may be my saviour?

A few questions though:

Firstly I love my teas & coffees. Can I realistically have any milk, if so how much?

Does it make you constipated/breath smell like Atkins is supposed to?

Lastly which book should I get as he has written a few.

Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

If you make sure you're drinking plenty of water then you shouldn't get constipated or have bad breath - I eat about Atkins level carbs and don't suffer from either although I don't go as often because I'm not feeding my body as much stuff that it doesn't want. The problem with milk in tea is that the carbs do add up over the course of a day. I put double cream in my tea and coffee - it's lower carb and you need about a tenth as much.

The only Briffa book I've read is Escape the diet trap which I highly recommend. Come join us here - we're pretty much doing Briffa style low carbing (i.e. eat the level that you are happy with).

Try The New High Protein Diet by Dr Charles Clark. Its along the lines of Briffa/Atkins, but not as American or as harsh as Atkins. I am following this & finding it very easy.

I am low carbing and I use 'almond breeze' milk. It only has 0.2 g carbs per 100 ml and tastes ok in tea.

Thanks everyone.

I have ordered the book from Amazon & I will let you know how I get on.
Have got some sweetened soya milk in a cupboard somewhere, so I shall start by substituting the milk with that & see how it goes.

Does anyone know how many carbs I should be eating a day for steady (but not extreme) weightloss?

Haven't bought any new clothes for a couple of years now as I was always going to lose weight & now none of my old ones fit but I don't want to buy anything much until I've gone down another size iyswim. Would be lovely to treet myself to some new clothes in the Autumn!

Dr Clark recommends 40g-60g a day, but not more. That allows a piece of low carb fruit or 1 slice of bread, or the same carb equivilant. Atkins induction is 20g carbs a day, which i find too restrictive. Ideally, you want yoru carbs to come fruit veggies & dairy (not milk).

From veggies (not fruit, sorry)
