Exercise with a hula hoop - any experience?

I am desperate to tone up my gut which is expanding daily at the moment - no, not pregnant! Smile Anyone used a hula hoop to work the core muscles? What should I be looking for when I buy one - size, weight etc? Not got a clue so all advice welcome! Thanks

Our sports centre has recently started powerhoop classes which uses a weighted hoop that fits together in sections. You can buy them online too

Thanks Seona1073 - have you been to any of the classes?

I bought mine from Tesco £14.99 - it's weighted. Do not buy kids ones you need the weighted ones. If you have a Home Bargain near you the sometimes have them in my mum got one there for £6.49.

I use mine whilst watching the TV - it's fab

That sounds great Joby1970, thanks. Hopefully I can manage to use it in my flat without knocking things over!

I've been thinking about hula hooping too! When I read a bit about it I found out that the bigger the hoop the easier it is and that your hoop should come up to one palm's width below your boobs - if it is smaller then it will be really hard to learn. Once you get good at it you can get a smaller hoop. I think i'm going to get a 40" hoop to start with!

After seeing lots of people using these in the States and then Grace Jones, I am also keen and have asked for a weighted one for my birthday. I am hoping I will use it in front of the tv and miraculously go back to having the slim waist of an 18-yr-old (over hopeful?)

(I was trying to do it with a kids hoop and wondering why I couldn't do it!)

Lottapianos · 23/07/2012 14:42

strandednomore, do you have a particular brand of hoop in mind? Is there one you have your eye on or are you leaving it up to your loved ones to choose? Just curious if you have picked one out already!

No - I just know it has to be weighted and for adults! Hadn't realised there were lots of different types - better do a bit of research rather than just leaving it to chance my dh to decide....

Lottapianos · 23/07/2012 14:48

Ok cool, I will get researching myself Smile

If you want a cheaper option, you can buy a child's one, make a tiny hole in it and half fill it with water, then reseal hole. Acts like a weight.

I love my hula hoop - not enough room in any room in the house so I do it in the back garden usually under cover of darkness!

I got mine from Amazon and think it cost about twelve pounds. It's a 39", 1kg variety.
