Dieting after Gall bladder surgery

Pleiades45 · 16/07/2012 11:59

Just wondered if anyone has any suggestions about dieting after gall bladder surgery?

I'm looking at 2 options, low Gi or low carb. I see the low carb involves high fat. Has anyone been successful at this but keeping the fat to a minimum?

How soon after gall bladder surgery will you start dieting? You need to make sure you are giving your body adequate protein, vitamins, minerals and calories to recover. I think it would be best to talk to a doctor or nutritionist. I wouldn't recommend a low carb diet as it would be very difficult to obtain adequate nutrition if you have to keep fats to a minimum.

Thanks for the reply. I had my surgery in October, so I'm more than ready to diet and exercise.

I know that my body doesn't tolerate full fat. I'll have a closer look at the low gi

Hi. I also had my gallbladder out last October and now really need to get down to dieting. I have about 3 1/2 stone to lose. I think I am going to try only eating foods with less than 5% fat and sticking to three meals and one snack per day. The less than 5% fat thing really worked in the run up to my surgery but I have made up for it since and really need to get back on track. Maybe we could support each other?

Midnightisaplace, that's a great idea. I've about 4 stone to lose so I've a bit further to go than you.

Right starting from today I am going to do my best to get rid of this weight. I have downloaded a couch to 5k app on my phone and have just done the first day of it. I always feel a little bit more motivated to stick to healthy eating if I am also getting some exercise.
Tomorrow I am going to weigh myself on one of those machines you get in the chemists. My scales at home are not very accurate and I want to know exactly how much I weigh at the moment.

Pleiades45 · 16/07/2012 21:08

Don't get depressed over the scales! One of my kids had altered ours so I was actually relieved to see I didn't weigh as much as I first thought.

I'm being brave and going to an ab attack class tomorrow evening. I hope to be walking on Wednesday Smile. Last year before my op, I went swimming 4 nights a week for about 6 months. Each night I did 700m which is a lot because I'm not a strong swimmer. I didn't see the slightest difference, hence the change in tack with the exercise.

Ab attack sounds a little too extreme for me. Good luck with it! I have just weighed myself and I am exactly 14 stone. I will try and weigh myself every Tuesday and see how I go.

Pleiades45 · 17/07/2012 14:30

It might be too extreme for me Grin but I'm going to give it a go. I've never been much of a runner. I have a cross trainer so I'll dust that down and include in my daily exercise.

I've also started a diary to log food and exercise.

How did the class go? I have been out walking or jogging for the last two evenings. I haven't been so good with my diet though. I had a slice of homemade gooseberry clafoutis after tea and am sitting here drinking a class of wine at the moment. I do my weekly shop tomorrow though and plan to stock up on healthy foods and now buy any rubbish.

Pleiades45 · 18/07/2012 22:11

The class was hard. I thought I was going to collapse. It wasn't the pace, just the strength needed. However, today I'm still walking and I can feel that my abs have been worked. Didn't do any exercise today, spent my time trying to get my gps working so I can take the kids out walking and geocaching. I lament that I can't use the kid's trampoline (my back and vertigo won't allow it). Tomorrow I will try to use the cross trainer.

The diet is going well. I managed to stick to low gi and I've increased my water consumption. Tomorrow won't be so good. We have a birthday in the house so there will be popcorn, crisps, cake etc floating around. I'm trying to keep wine for the weekends only. The diary is proving to be a good idea, it's encouraging me not to eat things I don't want to admit to.

Do you have a family to feed? I find it difficult fitting my diet around family meals, especially when they are all still so young that they are fussy about what they eat.

I'm low carbing again and my gallbladder was removed a couple of years ago. I do have to take it easy on the fat content as my body just can't handle it but don't rule out the low carb approach just yet.

I find this w.o.e. Works best for me, no hunger, no mad cravings and no feeling like I'm on a diet and missing out :)

midnightisaplace · 22/07/2012 08:07

I have been avoiding posting as I have been so bad with my food this week. I have managed to get out and do my couch 2 5k most days though. I have just signed up to my fitnesspal on my phone and am going to give that a o for the next few weeks. Turns out I need more structure than just trying to be healthy. My willpower is non existent.

Pleiades45 · 23/07/2012 14:28

Sounds like you're working on the fitness angle. How have you been bad with food? Types of meals, snacking between meals or portion sizes??

I was very good with food all week except for the weekend. I didn't even do too bad on the day DS had his birthday. Saturday, however, my kitchen was off limits due to DH putting a hole in the floor. so it was easy option all day long and none of it was healthy. However, I've noted it all in my food diary and I think the diary is motivating me more than counting points or calories.

I had no bread all week until Saturday and I felt ill afterwards. So this week I'm staying off the bread, looking at brown rice or new potatoes as a source of carbohydrates. I have a friend and her little girl arriving Wednesday until Sunday so the week might not end well.

Just weighed myself and I lost three pounds this week so all is not lost. I think that shows how little exercise I must normally do as doing just 30 mins a day has made such a difference. I will have to keep it up this week.

Sounds lke writing down all you eat is working for you Pleiades. My problem at the moment is that I am at home all day and the weather is terrible so I find myself eating for something to do. Hopefully we will get some good weather before I go back to work in September.

Pleiades45 · 24/07/2012 11:52

Well done! better than me. I lost 2lbs. I've put my name down for more ab attack this evening. I've not been getting on the cross trainer but I've been very busy around the house and garden. Yesterday I cut the grass, takes about 45 mins. Another busy day today so hopefully it will make up for the lack of exercise.

I'm also at home all day and I think the diary stops me from eating just for the sake of eating. I'm reaching for water now more than food.
