Hi there, my GP as given me Orlistat 120mg to help me lose weight. After managing to track it down (due to shortages) Im a bit comfused with what to do! My GP didnt really give me a good indication of do's & donts with regards to my diet. Is it right that I must not go over 15g of fat per meal? What is the calorie intake that I need to follow 1600 per day?

I was hoping to start this tomorrow but as im not sure what to eat or how to count fat/calories in my diet I dont want to start & then fail due to lack of information.

If anyone out there has taken this or is currently taking it I will be very interested to hear from you
Many thanks
:)

I remember from a thread way back, the constant advice was, never fart unless on the loo! Don't eat fat, just a little will seep out. Use the advanced search and look for Orlistat.

Is this Alli? If so, and even if not, have a look at alli.co.uk/How-alli-works/Diet-related-treatment-effects/

I am not taking this drug nor do I know anyone who has so not much help I'm afraid. However I have been recommended by Mumsnet member to use MyFitnessPal.co.uk to enter my food intake which breaks down calories, fat content, protein content etc. I think it's a bit labour intense in the beginning but as you circle back to the same food it only takes a click to add.

Best of luck to you Smile

I tried this several years ago and gave it up because I had a nasty "accident" at work Blush

I had telephone counselling from the firm when I started it.

If you eat anything with fat in it, the tablets do their job and eject it from your body........

Itdidntworkout · 15/07/2012 16:20

I think Alli is the same, just a lower dosage, therefore no prescription.

Ive read through the leaflet 100 times & it doesnt state anything about how much fat ect to have in your diet im just going by the Alli instructions & websites ive been looking at. The leaflet does say that its possible to have very loose stools & in some cases the urgency to go with possible leaky wind but this is only if you have to high fatty foods. im going to have a look now see what I can find out about this before I consider starting it tomorrow,
thanks for the advice :)

Eat nothing with more than 4% fat and you shouldn't experience any problems.

skyebluesapphire · 15/07/2012 20:33

Yes, I was going to say 3% fat from memory....

So cheese, pizza and roasties are definitely out

puffyankles · 15/07/2012 20:38

I would advise that you wear Tena while you are taking Orlistat. There is little or no warning at all when the oil is expelled from your body plus it can stain underwear bright orange so white trousers are out.

TodaysAGoodDay · 15/07/2012 20:39

I've been on this. The -ahem- solid waste can be revolting. Greeny-yellow, oily and runny. Yuck. Don't eat any more fat than you can absolutely help while you're on it.

skyebluesapphire · 15/07/2012 20:42

Agree with above! It works because you are too scared to eat any fat Grin

Nuttyprofessor · 15/07/2012 21:13

I took Orlistat a couple of years ago. Yes you will be too scared to eat fat. I once ate a sausage and nearly died.

I stuck to 1400 calories a day.

Cannot eat chocolate or cheese or rich sauces or bacon. Lived on lean meat, vegetables and salad.

My gallbladder packed up due to lack of use and had to be removed. After it was removed I strangely had no problem losing weight and now weigh 5 stone less than I did then. I lost 2lbs a week on Orlistat, which is good for me as I found it impossible to lose weight even though I was sticking to a healthy low cal diet.
