Healthy weight for my height

ChablisLover · 07/07/2012 11:47

Hi

Can anyone tell me what a healthy weight for my height is?

I'm 5ft 4 inches and a bit.
I'm 36

Dh seems to think I am carrying a few extra pounds and could do with losing some weight.

I say not as I am in a healthy bmi range - he says that's codswallop as rugby players are obese using this measure.

He is doing my head in

He is on a diet and is eating nothing but fruit and salad. I say this is not healthy.

I had previously lost about 2 stone with slimming world and have only put on about 4 pounds from my target weight 2 years ago.

Sorry this is more of a rant but could save my sanity.

BMI isn't the best indicator of health, for the reason that your DH gave. Rugby players are often classes as 'obese', when they are far from it! try finding out your Body fat percentage, that can be a good thing to go from.

I feel your pain, it can be very hard when one half of a couple is on a diet/health kick, they can be quite obsessive about it, and its all they talk about!

Sleepwhenidie · 07/07/2012 11:54

Bmi works for most people, that is why the medical profession uses it and offers it as a good guide. Rugby players etc have a much higher muscle/fat ratio than the average person, which is why they are the exception when it comes to bmi.

If you are within the healthy range, (which is actually quite broad) and happy then you are fine, tell him to stick to worrying about his own waistline!

Sleepwhenidie · 07/07/2012 11:55

Oh and you are bang on about the fruit and salad, he should focus on lean protein and veggies!

Whitamakafullo · 07/07/2012 11:55

Tell him to take a jog to the far side of fuck! How rude of him!!

ChablisLover · 07/07/2012 12:27

Am so pissed off at him

How very dare he!

I eat a sensible balanced diet yes I have treats but it saves a splurge later!

So annoyed and upset by it all and it's not a good picture to be painting to our ds who eats v little anyway to be obsessed by food and diet! And the constant weighing of yourself!

If your BMI and your body fat percentage are both lower than 25 then you need take no action.

fatlazymummy · 08/07/2012 08:51

BMI is quite a good indicator for non athletes.
You should also check your waist/hip and waist/height ratio

The other thing to take into account is your shape, if you are apple shaped then BMI isn't necessarily going to give you an accurate indicator of health. Many people believe the healthy BMI range for woman is too high and the range for men is too low. I guess it comes down to whether you feel happy with your size and health too.

At a BMI of 24 for example I would look and feel fat and I certainly would be a healthy size but others on here claim to be slim at that size - so it comes down to body composition rather than just BMI.

I find it all very confusing. So much to take into consideration. May be it is important to know what is important for each of us?
I'd like to be able to wear my special dress I bought for a party some years ago which was so nice on me and which I can't even try to get into. This dress brings back my good memories and it would be so fantastic to be able to wear it again! It's size 12 which was my normal size but for a few years I've been wearing size 16. Ideally I'd like to be size 10.
I've checked this site:
www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm
and it suggests my ideal weight is 50-66. I think I'd be happy with 60 kg
I know that I would look really skinny if I'm 50 kg because I tried to loose weight some years ago and when I reached 54 kg I looked awful, I looked so ill that people were asking if I was okay so I think the way we look and feel is more important than being totally ideal in our weight but that's my opinion :)
Wishing you good luck and happiness.

So this started all again this weekend

And I am beyond upset.

He has been a diet despot this week. Surviving on fruit and salad and taking it out on me and bullying about my weight and my lack of weight loss.

My confidence and self esteem have taken a hit.

He weighs himself twice a day and wants I know what I weigh every morning. Not great this week as its the ttom and that all adds to my bad form apparently!

I don't think I can stand it much longer!

No, of course you don't have to put up with this! He is behaving like an utter arsehole. Tell him to fuck off and get a life and whilst he's doing it to get a healthier attitude to his own diet and weight.

HappySquirrel · 15/07/2012 20:33

If he's being really annoying, and you'd be up for it (bearing in mind that this is not a suggestion you lose weight), perhaps the two of you could set up a healthy fitness goal? Eg. a 5K or 10K in the fall. This would prove that you're able and healthy at your current weight and should certainly aid him in his weightloss (and perhaps show him that a fit person generally needs more energy than just salad).

He has no business knowing your weight and frankly it's insulting that he pesters you about it (unless you are morbidly obese and he raises it out of love and concern). Perhaps your DS would enjoy a physical hobby with you two and more focus on being healthy in terms of "not winded by climbing stairs" than "only eating lettuce".

ChablisLover · 15/07/2012 21:25

Happy squirrel that sounds like a plan.

I am of a normal bmi for my height and like all woman my weight fluctuates but always goes back down to normal. But he is obsessed at losing weight.

I did slimming world about 2 years ago and the weight has more or less stayed off. Would love to tone up though ( and i think thats all i need) but a combination of a dodgy back and hip make it awkward to find something to do. All my friends go to tae bo but I find it too hard on my back and hip and the Pilates / yoga class at leisure centre is at a bad time.

Was thinking of home DVD to tone up.

Your DH is right that you can have a "healthy bmi" but if you have low muscle tone you could still be carrying around unhealthy levels of fat.

I think waist (or dress size) a better measure.

However sounds like he is being a bit unreasonable in his behaviour...

FWIW I am 5 4 and 37 with 3 DC, weight between 8 10 and 9 0 - have very good muscle tone, and am size 8-10 depending on shop.
