low carb snack for work

annabegins24 · 02/07/2012 19:24

Hi Everyone,
I'm on a low carb diet at the mo. I'm up at 6am and have to have breakfast which is usually a boiled egg and toast. My next 'meal' is usually around 12.30. Problem is the bit inbetween these meals. At work I'm starving, I'll take a yogurt but need something else. Any ideas of snacks I can take into work?

Nuts? Protein bar?

LadySybil · 02/07/2012 19:30

nuts
meats
carrot sticks, (a pound from sainsburies, lasts me two days)
celery sticks
fruit of any description.

if you want something that doesnt go off easily, get a graze box and choose low gi stuff. it works out at just under a pound per packet. a box has four packets in it, and is 3.75 (I think).

Yddraigdragon · 02/07/2012 19:40

Not sure about the toast or the yoghurt tbh, both are carby, potentially could be why you are starving in work as your blood sugar is bouncing from the carbs.
I would just do egg in the morning, omelette etc so can bung some bacon/ham/onion/mushroom in for variety. If boiled eggs work, have two with some ham/chicken etc.
Snacks for work - cheese is easy and clean to eat - I look for the lunchbox minis like babybel or cathedral city. Peperami are low carb, nuts work well, or chop up some chicken etc. Sainsbugs do great crispy cooked bacon which works well as a snack and gets stolen by colleagues every time

pod3030 · 02/07/2012 19:43

what about cooked cold quorn sausages ?

annabegins24 · 02/07/2012 20:31

Oh thanks eveyone for your suggestions!
dragon I honestly didnt realise yogurts had that much carbs in them..wow you learn something new eveyday! Can you get any low carb yogurts? Its my only treat of the day.
mrsgclooney protein bar sounds good! I do housekeeping so something I can put in my pocket and eat while I work would be best.

What yddraigdragon said, really.

Nuts, cheese, sausages, hardboiled eggs are all easy and good low-carb snacks, but a low-carb diet shouldn't leave you 'starving' at any time (unless you're only a couple of days into it, maybe?) because the whole idea is that it will stabilise your blood glucose...

The toast (not exactly a low carb choice!) will be the culprit - cut that out and I bet you don't feel the need to snack mid-morning.

Or alternatively, come and join the Low Carb Bootcamp Wink

WillieWaggledagger · 02/07/2012 20:37

Are you eating a low carb diet or just reducing te number of carbs you eat? Because toast will be undoing all your hard work if you're low carbing. As yydraig says yoghurt can be carby too, particularly if it's low fat. On BIWI's low carb threads total Greek yoghurt (full fat) is recommended as one of the lowest carb versions

annabegins24 · 02/07/2012 20:48

Well really Its my hubby who is on the diet to try gain muscle and I'm going along for the ride cos its easier. Also I have found eating less carbs make me less interested in cakes and biscuits, which can only be a good thing!
I was wanting to keep my diet more balanced compared to my hubby, however I'm willing to change things so I'm not starving.

how about soya yoghurt? should be lower carb. Taste may take a while to get used to but I am going make my own this week with coconut.

I would ditch the protein bars tbh and make your own snacks eg flax crackers, coconut muffins etc the list is endless!

GetOrfMoiiLand · 02/07/2012 21:33

My failsafe low carb snack is a packet of macadamia nuts. A 60g bag of salted ones costs a quid in Sainsburys (they are ridiculoudly expensive in other supermaktes I have found) and half a packet is a really good snack (have the other half in the afternoon).

CutItOutAndRestart · 02/07/2012 21:37

hmmm nuts I love nuts. What's the carb count on those ones GetOrf?

QueenStromba · 02/07/2012 21:49

A balanced diet really is one that is based on veg and protein in its natural form with the fat still attached. Up until the food pyramid came about, starchy food was just seen as a filler rather than the cornerstone of the diet and you really don't need it at all. If you go for it whole hog without worrying about eating too much fat or calories then your appetite will work itself out and you will balance out at a healthy weight for you. More importantly you will be reducing your risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, some forms of cancer etc.

Great ideas and advice, thank you!
cutitoutandrestart mmmm coconut muffins, please tell me more!?

muffins here I make small ones so I have more and they are then fewer carbs each. I didn't use cream (used coconut milk) and only a small amount of splenda.

there are lots of lovely recipes on mse. Mexican fudge is another good one. :)

hillyhilly · 02/07/2012 22:21

Sausage, olives, seeds, houmous & veg dips, pistachios, I make a very thin omelette and roll it, also planning to make chicken tikka for snacks.
Like you, it was supposedly my dh that was low carbing but I'm getting right into it.

Yddraigdragon · 02/07/2012 22:33

It is worth looking at the carblife website, loads of recipes on there. Personal favourite is cheeseburger pie which is great for packed lunches. Yoghurts - particularly low fat ones - have sugar added to make them taste nice.

I try to eat 'real' food. Meat, veg, cheese, eggs, nuts, salads. Little fruit as it is high in sugar and you can get the same vitamins etc from veg. As little processed food as possible as there is so much added to make it last longer/taste nicer.

I avoid the carby fillers - potatoes, pasta, rice, bread - as they have little nutritional value and muck up the blood sugar levels.
Love the macadamias in Sainsbugs too :)

annabegins24 · 02/07/2012 22:53

dragon I hear what your saying I've been on this diet/healthy eating kick for a couple of weeks now and I cant touch processed foods anymore..its almost like my tastebuds have changed and I can taste chemicals/sweetners in it.
Do you ever give yourself treat days, where you have a slice of cake or piece of chocolate? I dont want to deprive myself.

OP posts:
Yddraigdragon · 03/07/2012 00:38

anna if you eat chocs or cake you are effectively taking yourself back to day one each time and have to go through the pain again. So no, if I am taking care of myself properly I don't.
I find though that if I am eating low carb I do not want sugary treats. I can walk through the kitchen without stopping to see 'what I can eat'.

teaandthorazine · 03/07/2012 07:05

I eat the odd bit of very dark choc - but we're talking at least 70% cocoa stuff, none of your dairy milk! And definitely no cake!

You'll probably find that not only do your tastebuds change but your body's reaction to sugar changes too - now I feel like utter crap, basically, if I eat sugary stuff. Sick, lethargic, bloated. It's not a nice feeling.

SpringGoddess · 03/07/2012 09:38

I eat puddings in restaurants if there are particularly appealing but never eat sugary stuff at home - it has worked for me for 6 months but everyone's different. The nuts I cannot control - I love nuts, I just can't have them in the house without gorging excessively. I snack on cheese or Parma ham.

Fluffy1234 · 03/07/2012 12:12

Small tins of tuna, packets of ham, crabsticks, tiny pieces of cheese are good snacks.

QueenStromba · 03/07/2012 12:20

Watch out for crabsticks - they can be pretty high carb.
