A new thread for those of us who started in January 2012 and anyone starting now. Everyone welcome for support, encouragement and occasional arse kicking :)

could you could take the children with you and run in a park while they pootled along on bikes or scooters? Not quite the same but I've seen it done. Even if you just do a long walk it will help you fitness and wear out the kids!

UmBongo · 27/10/2012 22:23

Week 4 run 1 yesterday and I am another one unsure about how much I am going to get done this week. I have taken ds with me before on his bike, but I think he will take some persuading if it is wet and cold. I really don't want to run in the dark. [scaredycat]

I think I will just have to keep walking and hope I get one or two runs in. Good luck everyone!

What sort of hat jchocchip?

MegBusset · 27/10/2012 22:29

Noooo running is totally a solitary activity for me, no way would I attempt it with 3yo and 5yo in tow, I wouldn't get anywhere except stressed! I'd rather get out of bed at 6am!

jchocchip · 27/10/2012 23:01

:) at 6am at least the clocks go back tonight so it will be lighter.
Today I did a frosty parkrun with 2hats. A fleecy one until I warmed up then I swapped for a cap as the sun is so low. discarded hat and jacket for 3rd lap. I like fleece hats if it is wet, but some people wear knitted beanies. Saw earmuffs this morning too...

jchocchip · 27/10/2012 23:11

meant to say missed pb by 41 seconds :( need to do more speed training this week...

MegBusset · 27/10/2012 23:12

I have a knitted Thinsulate beanie. Went out this afternoon in a break between sleet and hailstorms, wearing a long-sleeved base layer under my normal running top, plus hoodie, hat and gloves. Typically within five minutes of being out of the house, there was blazing sunshine and I ended up boiling!

cinnamongreyhound · 28/10/2012 21:50

I started running in January and then I was wearing a t-shirt under a hoodie, had the hood up to start with and then put it down and a pair of joggers. When I had to stop running was wearing a running top and 3/4 length running trousers, have a full length pair to wear in winter and having lost 5st since I started last year will need a new hoodie or windbreaker type jacket. I tie my hair up when I run which would make a hat tricky!

I have been for a very brisk walk tonight and broke into a run (in my running shoes as they support my foot more than other shoes but normal clothes). Mananged about 30 seconds before my foot was really hurting :(. Think I will have to be a bit more patient!

That must be very frustrating Cinnamon. Take it easy!

Run 7 week 1 done this morning. For the first time I ran for distance not time and did 2.5 miles in 27 mins, very happy with that :)

MegBusset · 30/10/2012 17:12

OW my legs this morning though Shock

jchocchip · 31/10/2012 07:02

hooe your legs are feeling better today [hgrin]

MegBusset · 31/10/2012 12:25

Well I did Week 7 Run 2 this morning and they're fine but I will probably pay for it tomorrow morning [hgrin]

cinnamongreyhound · 31/10/2012 13:55

You're doing great MegBusset!

I'm going to give it another go on Saturday, get all my gear on and see how it goes!

Hi everyone - fantastic to see your progress, MegBusset - nearly there. Sorry to hear that your foot is not strong enough to run, cinnamon, but you'll get there. Take care and take it slow.

I went out this morning at 6.30 taking advantage of it being lighter this week (though probably only another couple of weeks before it's dark again at that time). I've been slack lately, and on holiday without my trainers for some of last week. Only been out twice in two weeks, and eaten far too much rubbish over the last few days. So it was a bit of a slog, but feel so much better for having gone out.

jchocchip · 01/11/2012 20:23

Take it slowly Cinnamon and good luck :) I need to go out for a run but I don't like the dark... maybe first thing?

UmBongo · 01/11/2012 20:50

Take it easy Cinnamon, don't do too much too soon.

I have finished week 4 and now have a sore heel. It feels right inside my left heel and up the inside of the heel. Poo. I am due another run tomorrow and I think I will give it another days rest. (or 2 or 3 days rest).

shithappensx1000 · 03/11/2012 12:47

Completed week 7 this morning - had a great run. Actually beginning to feel like a real runner, even speeded up for last minute. Smile

MegBusset · 03/11/2012 14:04

Just completed week 7 too. Without the speeding up at the end, but then the last 1/4 mile is all uphill!

shithappensx1000 · 03/11/2012 14:41

Well done MegBusset!

cinnamongreyhound · 03/11/2012 15:36

Great stuff MegBusset and shithappensx1000!

hi cinnamon
can i ask what it is that you did to your leg?
have started running again after a stress fracture and am worried about doing it again.
hope your recovery goes well

cinnamongreyhound · 03/11/2012 16:09

Hi I broke three metatarsals so my foot not my leg. It was a fall rather than a stress fracture. I am planning to run either in an hour if I can be bothered or tomorrow. Still painful when I walk but according to the dr all healed so why not give it a go Wink

OP posts:
toxtethogrady · 03/11/2012 16:16

i started back about 5 weeks ago. on a 5k plan. I'm up to 10 mins running with a few mins in between and then another 10 mins running. i love it and could run for longer, but i am so paranoid about my leg. it feels achy the next day, but i fractured it 3 years ago! did fib/tib bones, but it should've healed by now. I'm either heading for another stress fracture or the bones are just getting used to doing more.

good luck with the run

jchocchip · 03/11/2012 21:40

well done 'grady not surprised you worry, maybe get some advice from your Dr?

dh came and did his second parkrun today and knocked 4 minutes off his last time :~) lovely morning.

cinnamongreyhound · 03/11/2012 22:55

My dh has broken several parts of himself in a variety of motorbike accidents and he says it took him years to be pain free toxtethogrady! Loads of people have said to me that their breaks still ache in the cold so I guess its never really back to normal. How did you break your leg before? I would guess its just your bone getting used to taking more impact, I'm not sure 10 mins running is enough to cause a stress fracture. Also my understanding is that once broken the bone is actually stronger rather than weaker but I'm no expert. Plus weight bearing exercise helps to strengthen bones in the long term :)

toxtethogrady · 04/11/2012 11:44

i broke it running! a sorry tale of too much too soon! within a month of starting i was doing 4 miles and running for an hr, which i thought was great but actually i should have paced myself and done something like the 5k programme, because it was agonising and misdiagnosed for 6 months til they stuck it in an mri scanner.

Good to know that it may just be a case of aching rather than fracturing again. am necking vitamin d and calcium tablets and running in water to strengthen the muscles too. Gonna go out tonight and see how i get on.

have a good sunday
