Carbs help please

Plenty of weight to lose and worried about health now even more than appearance.
I want to reduce carbs but don't think I want to go as low as Atkins for example. So if I want to do moderate carb how exactly do I go about that? Do you restrict yourself to carbs (when I say carbs I mean potatoes, pasta bread, other grains, sugar, I don't mean veggies and salad) to just one meal a day ? OR do you have a serving at each meal but keep it much smaller than a normal serving amount?
The reason I don't think I can do no carb is that at some point I'm sure I'll just go nuts stuffing myself with cakes, pasta and bread if I completely deny myself of it.

Thanks!

that was "pasta, bread," not "pasta bread" although as a carb addict I think that does sound rather delicious!

I would just have carbs in the morning - so porridge or whole grain bread
I've cut out carbs pretty much except my morning porridge. Eat a lot of fish, meat, eggs, veg etc

I'm lurking as I'd quite like to know the answer to this.

So.. if you're going to reduce rather than cut out the carbs entirely then the proteins you add must be low-fat. It's only on the Atkins-style methods that you can eat all the yummy cheeses and fatty meats and still lose weight. Right? Sorry, I'm a proper dunce at all this Blush

fruit and vegetables are carbs as well, so if you're not doing Atkins, then you will be eating some carbs. I have cut out bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, all that sort of stuff, but still eat carrots, peas, bananas, etc.

I also get carbs (and good plant proteins) from quinoa and other stuff like buckwheat, bulgar wheat. I like quinoa the best of these as its pretty versatile - good hot and cold, sweet or savoury and I have it wherever I would have had pasta, potatoes etc.

The one thing that sends me nuts is the smell of fresh bread - I have to exit sharpish cos I could eat the whole loaf. I miss toast more than anything.

Feel great though and you do get rid of the carb belly!

you still eat carbs on atkins

I thought I wrote in my OP that when I talk about carbs I'd like to reduce, I am referring to bread, pasta, potatoes, grains and sugar. I do know that fruit and veg are also carbs as I wrote in my OP. But I'm not interested in reducing those type of carbs. Perhaps I should have been more clear, sorry.

So to rephrase my OP. I wish to follow a moderate carb food plan. I have no intention of cutting out any salad or vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, etc. I'm not that bothered about fruit, I can take it or leave it. I know that all those foods are carbs. But the carbs I wish to reduce are bread, potatoes pasta, rice, other grains and of course sweets, cakes etc.
That said, I am concerned that if I ban those things they will become more attractive to me at some point and I'll go mad eating them. So I am wondering if there's a way to eat them in moderation?

Maybe I shoudl just count calories instead?

brighthair thanks, that sounds like something I could live with. Porridge or scrambled eggs on (good) toast for breakfast and then the only other carbs I'd eat the rest of the day would be the non starchy vegetables.

I posted on another thread about this. I've lost almost a stone in 7 weeks, by cutting out most starchy foods, ie bread, cakes, spuds, rice, pasta, biscuits, sugar.

I eat mainly meat, fish, nuts, seeds, salad, veg, some fruit, full fat yoghurt, olives and olive oil. I have eaten very little in the way of carbs (approx 50g a day by logging all my food on myfitnesspal.com) most days, but once a week have had a takeaway, a few glasses of wine, an ice cream. I think if you have a meal like steak for example, then have either stir fry or steamed veg and just have no spuds. Lunchtime have a salad with a tin of salmon/hard boiled eggs/omelette etc. I think you have to allow yourself some carbs you like now and again; I usually make saturday night a night off, so I don't worry about what I'm eating. As I said, I haven't been overly strict all the time and the weight has come off steadily. Hope this is of some help.

I know at the gym they recommend we have a cheat meal a week
Tbh I am really, really bad for crumpets/cake (with icing, drool!) and bread but I have done 10 days so far without
In the hope if I stop eating it altogether, eventually my body will forget about it Grin
I am having my porridge though, as I think if you are eating carbs, better first thing in the morning then you burn them off

foreverondiet · 28/06/2012 23:25

I don't eat grains. I do eat low fat dairy. I do eat carrots and tomatoes but only rarely potatoes. Some pulses. Keep carbs under 100g and protein over 100g and watch fat intake......
Generally eggs breakfast fish and salad lunch meat and veg diner
