I am at my wits end.I have been following a very low fat diet since january and not lost a bean.My daily menu is

Breakfast - banana and apple

Lunch - pumpkin seed bread roll, apple

Dinner - roasted chicken breast and veg with gravy

1 cappucino

I have been using points with weightwatchers using the old 18 points a day rule and usually come under this at about 15 points so should surely I should be losing weight?
The only thing I can think of is that I take AD's mirtazepaine and risperedal and my GP said these do slow your metabolism down.Am wondering whether I need my thyroid function testing aswell.Any thoughts?

Thanks

TBH I don't think it's what you're eating.

I've been on both those drugs and they're TERRIBLE for making you put on weight. You've actually done well to maintain your weight :) I have seen so many people balloon on those drugs :(

There's a bit about it about reversing this drug induced weight gain
here . It actually suggests carbs are important because of the way the drugs act on the brain and the hunger control mechanisms.

Risperedal type drugs do slow your metabolism down, possibly because they slow you down (they are also known as major tranquilisers), so you're not using up much energy.

Do you feel slowed down on them? I felt apathetic and constantly tired on risperedal. I had no energy at all. I would sleep for about 12 hours and still felt tired. When I came off it I honestly felt like a new person :)

Mirtazapine isn't as bad but I'm only on a very low dose and I take it a night before I go to sleep.

I would go back to your GP, but if your otherwise happy with your drug regime I think your need to be realistic about how much weight you'll be able to lose on these meds, and I know that sucks :(

Thanks for your post HipHop i AM dozy on the tablets and I think this is the problem.Did you replace the risperdal with something else or just come off them? I'm thinking of just stopping them but I know my anxiety will come back.Am depressed and anxious because of my weight but the meds I take stop me being anxious but weighty.I can't win!

Regarding butter on weightwatchers one teaspoon is one point so a generous heaped teaspoon does eggs, mushrooms, bacon and tomatoes for breakfast for me and DH I call that one point each. I grill the sausages in the microwave.

DH and two of the three DC leave at 8am. I put frozen sausages on a tray in the microwave before bed. When I get up I make myself a brew press play on the microwave and then dress me, kids, DH! I then fry up the other stuff as the kids/ DH lay table get drinks. Baby DD is very compliant and giggles through the mayhem.

On weightwatchers veg and fruit are now zero points so it can be quite challenging to get healthily up beyond 20 points if you're essentially low carbing. My breakfast is about 6 points, same for lunch so there's quite a bit left to just fit in with the family for dinner.

Yes low fat doesn't work. You are not eating nearly enough protein, so if you do lose weight it might ending up being muscle mass due to lack of protein.

BTW I do have an underactive thyroid - worth getting tested if you have other symptoms eg exhaustion.

However if you are freaked out by following a ketosis diet (ie very low carb higher fat) you can try moderate carbs, high protein. Ketosis diets don't work for me as I get constipated and need lots of veg and some fruit esp prunes to stay regular.

Typical day for me in weight loss mode (and I got my body fat down to 18%, size 8, BMI 20.5 following this):

Breakfast: 2 egg omelette (with fry light), 100g fat free natural live yoghurt with 15g oatbran.

Lunch: Tuna or cottage cheese, or smoked salmon salad with seeds.

After work: 25g hard cheese or 25g nuts or 25g smoked mackeral

Dinner: chicken breast & massive portion of veg often with chopped tomatoes.

Sometimes might have an apple as well. Or 5 prunes.

Ideally 120g+ protein and less than 60g net carbs.

No I just came off the risperdal all together - very slowly though otherwise you have withdrawals.

I was prescribed them when I was very ill, and they did help. But as my mental health got better I found the side effects became worse than any benefits from taking the drug.

TBH I found taking risperedal like using a sledge hammer to crack a nut, they're a very crude drug. I think they essentially work by knocking you out a little bit but they knock all of you out, even your body as well as your brain so everything s l o w s d o w n :(

You need to weigh up how much you think the meds help, and whether the benefits outweight the side effects. Do you think you'd cope without them? Is there anything else you could do to help your anxiety (eg. talking therapies, meditation etc)?

foreverondiet · 24/06/2012 07:32

BTW - I eat what I call moderate carb, but wouldn't touch baked beans.

I do have occasional pulses especially if just been on a run. But baked beans have added sugar in the sauce so wouldn't call low carb.

Also don't overlook regular exercise for mental health.
