What weight/size should I be?

Trying to lose weight and become healthier.

I'm using the My Fitness Pal app, which is encouraging me not to eat crap as I have to write it down Wink

Anyway, I'd like to set a target for myself of my ideal weight, but I have no clue how to find this out.

I'm currently classified as obese Blush by BMI - which I know is not a very reliable source.

So, I'm 5ft 1" with large norks! - what would you give me as a target?

What's your waist measurement? Below 32 inches is best practice - with below 35 a preliminary target if necessary.

TBI, although BMI is flawed, if you're not a weightlifter or pg then it's probably a decent guide. An awful lot of people go on about how "apparently [insert name of manifestly fit sportsman with big muscles] is obese if you go by BMI therefore it's all bollocks" regardless of the fact that very few people have that kind of muscle mass. If you set an intermediate target of the weight you'd need to get down to "overweight" and a final target of a BMI of 25 then you'd be unlikely to go far wrong.

I'd maybe aim for 10 stone ish to start with. But give yourself little goals like half stones at a time. MFP is a good place to start-just having the awareness makes you think more about what you eat.
It's rubbish being little-I'm 5 2" with small norks and I have to really cut back in order to lose weight.
Good luck Grin

I'd echo what prematurely said about BMI - whilst it isn't a perfect measure it is a very good guide for most people, hence its use by the medical profession. Getting to a bmi of 25 is a great initial target, then see how you feel about going lower. Aim for 1lb loss per week and be sure to exercise, including resistance training.

Rubirosa · 04/06/2012 22:28

I'm a similar height to you and I'd say 10 stone is ok but chunky, 9st7lbs is the top end of "healthy" and 9 stone is probably ideal.

carabos · 04/06/2012 22:35

DMiL was told by her diabetes specialist to allow 100lb of weight for the first 5ft, then no more than 10lbs for every inch above that. She is 5ft1 so her maximum is 110lbs (just under 8st). I think that's a very good rule of thumb.

awaywego1 · 04/06/2012 23:29

I think aiming for around 9 is a good idea in the long run but set a shorter term goal that feels more achievable so you don't get disheartened. Im 5.2" and I can't imagine ever getting to 8 stone-I'd be -ecstatic- really happy at 8.5 but aiming for 9 at the moment-I'm 9.8 right now.

CarpeJugulum · 05/06/2012 06:22

Okay, so the consensus is 9 stone to start with - and then worry about BMI.

No idea what my waist is - I'm in size 14 clothing (down from 20!), but I have always had a wasp figure; I'm therefore happier dealing with my hips as a guide.

Will keep soldiering on - I'm hoping to make this a lifestyle not a few day thing.

Thanks folks! Thanks

I agree that BMI of 25 as a reasonable target - with large breasts going to be hard to get to lower end of normal BMI. Also agree best to aim for waist of less than 32, and if you can access body fat scales, aim for that to be under 28%-30%.

9 stone sounds about right.

HecateTrivia · 05/06/2012 08:04

I'm a bit under 5ft 2 and my ideal weight is between 7.5 and 9.5 stone

a chart here

Xenia · 05/06/2012 08:15

As Hecate shows on the chart it depends on your height. I am average height 5 foot 5 or 4 so on a chart like that and most charts of similar kinds a weight between 8 - 10 stone is about right. 10 will always look a bit chunky. 9 will look fine/normal. 8 being the lowest probably looks a bit better in some clothes or no clothes and under that can be so skinny in my view it's not attractive and not desirable on health grounds either. However if you have a lot to lose aim for the very top of a healthy weight chart so more like 10 stone.

CarpeJugulum · 05/06/2012 08:33

I'll be honest - even at 11.5 stone I look and feel much better. I've no idea what I was before Blush but it certainly wasn't pretty.

I was many moons ago a size 8 on the bottom (I've given up using my top half for sizing as I often have to go up to accommodate the norkage) and felt great, but I'm aiming for a size 10 realistically as I now have a lovely c-section shelf which rubs if clothes are too fitted.

There is also the bit of a bugbear that as I'm currently a 32 in bra size, if I drop much more, I'll come down to a 30 and maybe a 28; 30 isn't too bad, but at a 28 on a G cup, I'm going to be a lot more restricted. It shouldn't be something to worry about - but sadly seems to be the case.

The back size thing annoys me - ie that its more difficult to get 30inch bras. I am a 30D and it should be but isn't a standard size and options in say M&S are more limited. I can see that a 28G would be very limiting.

I am a size 8, 30D - and I have measured and its def a 30 not any less. But loads of the M&S bras start at a 32 which really annoys me. My ribcage looks v narrow though so I'd be surprised if many adult healthy woman where actually a 26.
