Why have I suddenly got fat? please scrutinise my diet and tell me!

I've always been "tall and lanky" - never put weight on unless I go overboard with the alcohol which isn't a problem now as I'm pretty much teetotal.

However since feb I have shot up from 10st 3lbs to 10st 10lbs. Doesn't sound like loads but it IS noticible. I'm 5ft 10in so I know I'm not overweight but still, I am heavy for me iyswim?

So my typical diet -

Breakfast - pack of belvita cereal biscuits
Lunch - chicken soup and mini naan bread
Snack - packet of crisps/chocolate bar
Dinner - Some combination of meat and veg. No potato.
Afters - couple of biscuits.

I've always eaten like this! why is it suddenly a problem? I've just turned 31.

I can lose it by going extremely low carb but that is a miserable existance and I don't have the willpower/finances to maintain it.

Any advice appreciated. Thought about doing slimming world/weight watchers but I don't think I eat much to begin with!

Nhs chart seems to suggest as high as 12 stone still healthy for you! Perhaps drop the biscuits (twice a day equals quite a lot of sugar). Add fruit or veg to get nearer 5 a day. More exercise? Lots of water.

I know this sounds crazy...but I had the same problem, and it turned out that it was a combination of hitting thirty and NOT eating enough!!

The body goes into starvation mode when we dont eat enough calories in a day, and it stores every one it DOES have, as fat, thinking its a famine!!

Try tweaking your diet?
Out goes the belvita...in comes fresh fruit and low fat yog, or porridge

Out go the biscuits...try fruit again or some nuts or whatever healthy option takes your fancy.

Is the chicken soup tinned?

How about trying to make your own...simple recipes abound and it wont cost you the earth either!

Dinner can be salads or baked spuds with tuna ...go online, there are endless suggestions!

Not being rude, but your diet reads sooo dull...

When I hit my thirties, it slowly became obvious that I was going to have to work a lot harder to even maintain the weight I had been since I was 15!

I even had to start doing much more exercise..not rushing off to the gym...but walking more and taking the stairs instead of the lift etc...

Its like having to run full tilt to stay still...NOT FAIR!

Diet clubs work for some...but they do cost, AND I know of several women who have lost massive amounts and then piled it all, plus more, back on!!

Same with the vlcd....yes the weight goes..but as soon as you return to your usual pattern of eating, its all back with a vengeance!!

I completely agree with holdingupthesky

You are simply not eating enough.

DontWannaBeAMug · 31/05/2012 09:37

Funnily enough, when I eat like a pig I do tend to lose weight.

I have a pretty small appetite though, it's so difficult. I always said whenever I try and eat healthy I put weight on.

Don't do diet clubs -- you don't have much weight to lose and they will just play havoc with your approach to food.

It's probably mostly a result of a slower metabolism, which happens to most people late 20s/early 30s. Can you increase your daily activity at all -- walking instead of the bus?

I don't think you need to go low carb, just eat something healthier for breakfast and snacks.

Take your vitamins and drink lots of water too.

Would you like to come over to my thread Dontwannabeamug?

It's called: Don't Starve! The eat more to weigh less group and it's here on the big/slim topic. We'd make you very welcome!

As others have said, I would just drop the sugar for something else - it doesn't have to be extreme low carb. Biscuitsx2, chocolate and any sugar you have in tea/coffee adds up to loads of sugar.

Porridge or eggs for breakfast, fruit and nuts for a snack, yoghurt for pudding maybe?

ShirleyKnot · 31/05/2012 09:41

Oh and you have a small appetite because your body has adjusted your metabolism downwards in order to deal with a too low calories intake.
