hello
Can anyone tell me how I can lose some weight from my tum and hips without losing weight in other places. I've got stick like arms and bony chest and don't want them to get any thinner but am vair vair flabby round the middle. I suppose someone's going to suggest exercise aren't they Grin?

the usual methods for losing body fat (ie diet and exercise) but you cant control which area's of your body fat will be lost from.
resistance exercise will firm up your muscle tissue and help with the flabby middle and thin arms

If you eat a low carb, high fat diet then most of the weight you lose will be from your tummy.

mercury7 · 30/05/2012 10:00

i strongly doubt that the two factors are causally related!

AgathaPinchBottom · 30/05/2012 12:38

Thanks guys... Will try and cut down on carbs and do some resistance stuff... Off to google what resistance training means now. Grin Thank u!

If you don't fancy low carbing just cutting right down on bread will help.

foreverondiet · 30/05/2012 19:25

I agree low carb I have lovely flat tummy now with definition. Resistance will firm up muscles.

That all being said I have lost from upper body too so have lifted (heavy) weights to improve arms and chest / shoulders.

So now have flat stomach and muscular arms!

The sad fact is you can't spot reduce fat loss, it disappears from all over and where you hold most is the last to go.

Other ops are mostly correct, best thing is weight training to build muscle and balance out your body shape. Also interval training cardio to burn fat, it's tough but over quickly, no need to spend hours running or on cross trainer etc. Jillian Michaels Shred DVD (just 20 mins a day) or 6 week 6 pack (there's a related thread here somewhere) would provide both elements...I'd imagine you would notice a difference v quickly if you did that 6x a week Grin

Cutting carbohydrates won't make you just/mostly lose fat from your tummy but eliminating processed carbs, sugar and wheat will almost certainly make your tummy a lot less bloated and help you lose weight.

BettyBathroom · 31/05/2012 06:23

Has anyone conducted a proper trial looking at the location of fat reduction for different diets or are we all just taking things on trust?

Sleepwhenidie · 31/05/2012 08:31

I think if you consulted any personal trainer, doctor or nutritionist they would all agree that spot reduction is impossible Betty...why would a different diet affect different body parts Confused - fat is fat!

If, however, you find it difficult to shift vestiges of fat over your belly (having lost fat from everywhere else) then a diet that eliminates sugar - rather than carbs - is most likely to get rid of it, there is apparently a relationship between insulin and belly fat.

QueenStromba · 31/05/2012 09:03

Here's just one journal article I've found on it - - linky. Wheat results in a greater blood sugar rise than table sugar Sleepwhenidie so you really do need to cut out all starches as well as sugar if you want to control your insulin levels.

QueenStromba · 31/05/2012 09:06

Another study.

mercury7 · 31/05/2012 11:32

afaik insulin sensitivity varies in different body tissues so that would in part account for differing rates of fat loss from different area's.

Insulin sensitivity is also greatly improved by exercise

also I think intra abdominal fat tends to be lost before subcutaneous fat, and fat on the hips and thights tends to be harder to get rid of in women.

Just a few points to further confuse the issue:o

MonsterBookOfTysons · 31/05/2012 18:38

I have used my fitness pal, so a more calorie controlled healthy eating plan.
I have a flat stomach now after swimming and sit ups.
I agree you can not choose where to lose the weight from, other wise my thighs would be perfect :o

mercury7 · 31/05/2012 21:51

if you could choose your own fat deposits I'd have a wasboard stomach and nice bouncy tit's :o , perhaps a slightly bigger bottom
