Keeping hunger at bay tips

Please Grin I'm desperate . My main downfall isn't the foods I choose but how much and how often I eat. When I try to cut down on what I eat even a relatively small amount I just find myself so hungry and generally low blood sugary feeling to the extent I either feel awful and shaky but don't eat then when I do I am so peculiar I end out eating double what I would have or eat something which helps but then obv I've eaten something and it adds up over the day to too much . Have tried drinking and not eating to see if it passes, eating fruit to fill me up (it rarely does), eating small amounts often.

Protein!! Try eating some cold cuts of low fat turkey or chicken breast. Anything that doesn't cause blood sugar high and then low - small square of hard cheese. Best not to get hungry though, because as you say usually end up eating more. Also more protein at mealtimes.

forever yes, protein. My problem with that is I'm veggie and have quite a special diet for medical reasons so the only protein I really have is eggs, cheese, nuts and seeds and milk and yoghurt. I use skimmed milk and have low fat yoghurt but cheese, nuts and seeds are all pretty fatty and there's a limit on how many eggs I can eat Confused

Can you have protein powder, eg bean protein? Quorn or tofu?

Milk and yoghurt also have carbs and nuts and seeds very calorific (although probably better to have nuts/seeds than fruit - work out which ones lower in carbs)

Also think of the psychology of it - are you really hungry? And if you are, think about if you DON'T eat, how the scales are going to be in your favour the next day or two - that feeling of how pleased you will be and hopefully how much better you will feel about yourself is what you need to latch on to.

Are almonds a good choice

busyboysmum · 20/05/2012 21:21

Try these:

chia seeds

I am finding them great for engergy and keeping hunger pangs at bay.

I can't eat beans and not very good with quorn either forever but can have tofu.

cream I think psychology has a large part to play but also I truly do get very hungry - I've always been like this all my life Blush - when I've lost weight it's never been through 3 meals a day and no snacks it's been from say eating my lunch in 2 or 3 stages over a few hours to keep my tummy digesting stuff (although I would pre measure the meal out so I didn't eat too much). Maybe there's something wrong in my brain to switch the hunger gauge off or something Hmm

Never heard of chia seeds busy but might give them a try, what do they taste like?

They don't taste of anything - I mix a teaspoon with half a glass of water, leave it 10 mins and it turns into jelly, then I add some orange juice and glug it down. I am always hungry but since taking these, I seem to be able to control my snacking.

I like the seed mix plus a small handful of nuts.

Can you eat full fat yoghurt? Or fruit with cream? That would have a lower gi and keep you fuller for longer.

reastie · 22/05/2012 17:54

Could do talking . I tend to find full fat yog a bit creamy for me and that it doesn't fill me up more than lower fat (so just stick to lower fat ones) but worth another shot

Greek yoghurt? That is higher in protein. With a bit of stewed fruit would be nice.
