Welcome to week 5 - how time flies when you're having fun!

Those of us who have been here since the beginning may be finding the going tough now. You may have found that your weight loss has stopped, or you may even have put weight on

But hopefully you will also be enjoying the food now, and settling into this as a new way of eating. You may also have discovered the other benefits of low carbing - not being hungry, having better skin, sleeping better, fewer problems with conditions such as IBS or even asthma, fewer hot flushes (for those of us of a certain age Grin) etc.

A month in, whilst you should be more used to eating like this, you will also have discovered that it's not always possible to follow a strict low carb plan because Real Life has an irritating habit of getting in the way.

But that's an important lesson for us all to learn. There are two key things here:

First, it demonstrates very clearly that you have to plan what food you buy and how you're going to eat. For example, I do quite a bit of travelling for work - going to meetings by train all over the country and sometimes abroad. If I don't plan my meals, then I will end up eating something like a sandwich because that's all that is available. I went to a meeting on Friday where the client very kindly suggested that she order lunch for us. I knew that if I didn't say I was low carbing, then we would sit down to a plate of sandwiches. It feels awkward to have to ask for special food. But - if you had a medical condition that meant you couldn't eat wheat, there would be no issue with such a request, would there?

Dieting is often seen as a trivial issue, and we think it's silly to have to ask for special/different food. But think of the impact/implications of being overweight. High blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, etc etc. None of these is trivial.

So in these situations, plan ahead and ask for something that suits you.

If you're travelling - eat properly before you set off. Get to know what shops are available at any station you're travelling through - there are an increasing number of M&S Food shops at railway stations and service stations, where you can always buy cooked meats/fish, small portions of cheese and salads (there are one or two without pasta/rice/noodles/potatoes!)

Second, despite your best efforts, sometimes life seems determined to sabotage things. Even if you ask people to cater for you, few people really understand what a low carb diet is. This has happened to me twice since Friday! My client very kindly ordered me a salad for my lunch. I was provided with a bowl of lettuce - with no dressing. Presumably whoever made it was thinking "this person is on a diet, therefore it must have to be fat-free". On top of the lettuce was sweetcorn (one of the carbiest veg there is), a dollop of coleslaw - presumably with sugar in it, like most is - a huge mound of grated carrot, some sliced cooked chicken, cucumber and tomato.

At least I could eat the chicken! But it was very dry and so to make it palatable, easy to eat, I ended up eating more of the coleslaw than I intended. I also was in the embarrassing situation of having to leave a lot of the lunch that I had specially ordered.

And last night, at dinner with friends, I had again plucked up courage to tell them of my low carbing. Despite being reassured that the meal would be low carb-friendly, it was anything but. And it was (mostly) served plated up, so to not eat it was to have been very rude. And it was delicious, and I was hungry ... Smile

But this is life. We have to get through these kind of occasions and accept that they may throw us off course briefly, but that this is a longer term process we are involved in. To use a horrible cliche, we are all on a journey here.

So if it happens to you - just accept it. Don't obsess about it. Avoid the scales for a while, and make sure you are super good for the following days. Don't use it as an excuse to jump off the wagon, for that way, surely, fatness lies!

Come and tell me how you're all getting along. How has life changed for you since we set off on this journey?!

Hi sbc just look biwi in the eye and carry on! Don't give yourself a hard time and on the grounds that every cloud etc at least you know that you feel better on lc

Shimbo · 19/05/2012 21:45

I am on day 4, and not doing tooooooooo badly, unfortunately I have not been perfect either! Been having some milk in hot drinks and a couple of glasses of dry white wine last night. I have been feeling pretty hungry today but I think I've been eating loads, greek yoghurt for breakfast, big egg mayo salad for lunch with mackerel fillets, cheese for snack, takeaway tonight was chilli chicken with sag paneer. I have lost the funny taste in my mouth, does that mean I am no longer in ketosis?

switchtvoffdosomelessboring · 19/05/2012 22:11

Can I join boot camp? After reading a thread on style and beauty I was directed to boot camp thread. Started on Thursday and so far so good (apart from some wine last night - was not my fault gov, honest had a meal out planned with friends and resisted chips bread and pudding).

I just can't believe how nice everything tastes! I've been doing slimming world for the last two years on and off so cooking in oil and butter is a dream come true! Honestly, I have to stop myself licking the plate.

I'm really thirsty though, I'm assuming that's normal ? I must have had about six pints of water today and still thirsty.

BettyBathroom · 19/05/2012 22:59

Welcome to the newbies - pull up a chair and make yourselves comfy!Grin

Started off the day with a coconut & almond muffin spread with almond butter to mask the stevia flaour - last one thankfully, too much stevia but I couldn't bear to chuck them out!

Lunch was a cream of cauliflower soup served with a choice of flavoured oils - the dcs had a blast with flavour combining - truffle oil worked well, as did chiili - one dc like the lemon pepper - but he's a real citrus head!

Dinner unusually we all parted ways - I had a prawn & coconut stirfry, dh had steak with sauteed veg and the dcs had a homemade margarita pizza.

Oh and I made an Almond muffin loaf - dh has fallen in love with it - I know it's not Bootcamp rules but it's low carb and we are at the maintaining stage- it's worth making and freezing for the odd quick breakfast. I've posted it on the recipe thread.

SharonGless · 19/05/2012 23:04

Yummy! Betty, I have found I need abut quarter of the quantity of stevia due to its strong flavour. There are nut allergies I. This house so I can't try that but sounds fab - send your leftovers up here x

BettyBathroom · 19/05/2012 23:16

We have nut allergies here too but thankfully not almond, I love nuts! Stevia needs to be used with caution - I'm not sure I've completely cracked it yet. Would rather the dcs had normal sugar in reduced quanties anyway so I tend to not use it so much.

MmeLindor. · 19/05/2012 23:21

Hi newbies (newer than me). I have been really thirsty too in my first week.

Made chicken korma tonight and it was yummy. Will post recipe on the thread tomorrow - need to check the spices. I made it with the cauliflower rice and it was quite well received by all. I think it might have too strong a taste to have with lighter meals, but the curry was spicy enough to keep up with it.

jan2011 · 20/05/2012 08:54

hey

some of those dishes sound lovely. i have fallen off the wagon twice this week, due to stress with dh. i mustn't let his rubbish, affect my healthy plans any more. so back on again today. im going to go and pick up some extra eggs and tinned fish later so im well stocked up! and ill not weigh myself till i know things are a bit better.

BettyBathroom · 20/05/2012 09:58

I fall off the wagon frequently but with low carb foods...less damage gets done that way.

mummyduff · 20/05/2012 13:15

Morning ladies, forgive me BIWI I over indulged last night on the vino/bubbly Blush
Feel so rough today, dont know why I did it, lesson learnt!!! Sad

Off to a bbq soon so will be super good just having meat and salad. Have been drinking gallons of water, not looking forward to the weigh in tomorrow.

Thegoddessblossom · 20/05/2012 13:26

Tea last night was a mushroom and smoked salmon 3 egg omelette.

Weighed in this morning 9.3, very happy with that. Grin

Breakfast this morning: greek yog with blueberries. I don't have that much and can't believe how long it takes me afterwards to feel hungry. I used to have an ENORMOUS bowl of porridge for brekkie.

OMG had the biggest temptation today - DH just made, after seeing them on saturday kitchen yesterday, homemade corned beef, pickle and onion cornish pasties. They looked amazing, smelled amazing, and no doubt tasted amazing. My mouth was literally watering. He made 4. Have one he says, I made one for each of us, he says, let's have a family lunch, he says......

But no - made myself a massive salad instead consisting of iceberg, olives, mackerel fillet, cucumber, tomatoes, mushrooms and a big dollop of coleslaw. Am so stuffed I didn't even eat the DS's left over pasties - DH did instead, meaning he has now eaten the quivalent of 2.5 pasties and is lying moaning on the sofa. Grin

moonshine · 20/05/2012 14:32

I'm nearly at the end of my first week of bootcamp (lite really if I'm being honest as had 2 glasses of wine last night but have made a deal with myself that I can drink this once a week). And at the grand old age of 45 I had celeriac for the first time ever yesterday! As no-one answered my question, I had 1/4 portion with butter and cream, which was ample with a lamb shank and salad. And it was gorgeous - even dh really enjoyed his 1/4 portion. But if I didn't have such a wodge of meat I'm sure I could do double that justice all by myself.

My 5lb off was but an abherration but as long as I'm at least 3lbs off by tomorrow's official weigh-in then I'll be happy.

How do you add yourself to the fabled spreadsheet?

switchtvoffdosomelessboring · 20/05/2012 15:30

I can't believe what I'm eating! I had chicken bacon avacado and feta cheese salad for lunch. And I even put oily dressing on it. Oil ffs, do you know how long it is since I used oil? I actually believed that fry lite tasted the same as real oil.

And this morning scrambled eggs made with real butter and cream!

Cream, butter, oil cheese and even ate the bacon fat. I love you bwiw

Lowest weight all year this morning - 80.5kg - which considering I'd had waaayyyy toooo much vino last night was a miracel. Paying for it today big time and as a result of mega hangover have had biscuits..... (2 chocolate fingers and 2 party rings) which I suppose in the scheme of things isn't tooo bad but feel cross with myself as a result.

Still trying to get back into the WOE - it's worrying how easy it s to let the carbs back in - just a few extra nuts / bit of breadcrumbs (thanks DH) as a crust an so forth.

Anyway - let's hope I've not done too much damage today and am on for a good result tomorrow!

MNP · 20/05/2012 16:58

B: meds and .5L
B2/L: cold rotissorie chicken, cuc, Tom in mayo
S: pork luncheon meat x5 and upto 2L so far

D: chicken breast with a splash of cream and broccoli and cauliflower tossed in garlicky butter
S: pâté on cuc

ohforfoxsake · 20/05/2012 18:04

Ah bollocks. Just been to an event and ate my body weight in afternoon tea.

Have realised (prior to stuffing my face) that I have not conquered my sugar addiction and it's been creeping in. A teaspoon of ketchup with my scrambled eggs, a couple of squares of dark choc, a packet of minstrels last night which I didn't really want but started so I finished.

I haven't had potatoes, pasta, biscuits or bread (although I had a bagel the other day when i was super-tired -which almost immediately gave me thrush). I think it's the tiredness that I'm struggling with, and am in a vicious circle of eating for a burst of false-energy.

So tomorrow is another day. The plan is to weigh in and face up to it, then do the Harcombe 5 day detox.

But for tonight I am carrying my bloated, uncomfortable, fat belly sluggishly around whilst feeling slightly hyper at the same time.

Thegoddessblossom · 20/05/2012 18:16

OFFS - dh lost 8 pounds when we did the 5 day harcombe phase 1.

ohforfoxsake · 20/05/2012 19:45

Its not too different from Bootcamp is it Goddess? I lost 10 pounds in 10 days the first time I did it, but as now, wobbled off the wagon. I haven't fallen off the wagon - I still consider myself to eat a low-carb diet, and do mostly - but have been struggling with tiredness which I would normally eat through.

I am considerably lighter than DH now Grin there was a time not so long ago I weighed a little bit more Blush.

On the note of DHs and this WOE, my DH is also just grateful for a decent meal every night (and often now a decent breakfast in the morning). He is all for this way of eating, but isn't actually doing it. So I might give him a plate of steak, veg, creamy blue cheese leeks for dinner, but he's had curry and rice for lunch, so I'm making things worse for him. He eats from the canteen at work (refuses to take a salad) and the choices are sandwiches, jacket potatoes, hot dishes etc - standard canteen menu, although it is good quality. He isn't much bothered by food, grabs what there is when he can and doesn't put a great deal of thought into it. Unlike me who tends to obsess Grin.

SharonGless · 20/05/2012 19:51

B: cheese and mushroom omelette which filled me up so mich that I only had celery sticks with Philly and a few macadamia nuts.
D: pork chops with with was el hanout rub, Greek salad and coleslaw

Thegoddessblossom · 20/05/2012 19:58

Tea: pork belly with leeks and cabbage.

Snacks: pkt macadamia nuts, 1 glass of red, 2 decaf coffees with cream.

Second temptation of the day - made the boys banana bread with hit custard for their pudding this evening. Hubba hubba. Resisted though.

Shimbo · 20/05/2012 20:06

I have been non-stop hungry today, and I don't know why this is, I have had:
Breakfast - an egg and smoked salmon
Lunch - tuna salad with mayo
Dinner - lamb and aubergine bake with cheese on top
Snacks - greek yoghurt, a boiled egg, cheese, salami slices, peanut butter (last resort)

I am not sure I can carry on if I am feeling this blooming hungry!

TinTinsSexySister · 20/05/2012 20:06
