<<whispers>> Weight Watchers whilst pregnant (yes I know I am not meant to, but I would appreciate some advice)

I joined Slimming World 16 weeks ago, and am now 15 weeks pregnant. I did well initially, losing 1.5 stone in 10 weeks, but the Morning Sickness and cravings mean I only want to/am only able to eat toast mornings and evenings. I was not able to stick to the plan.

I am not aiming to lose any weight, just maintain. I am currently having 7 extra points for the baby. Is this enough?

Congratulations on your new pregnancy. :)

I'd ask the person/leader at your club about number of points, Slimming World allows pregnant members...so no need to whisper. My midwife wanted me to join up as it is approved by some medical body, for maintaining weight through pregnancy.

I am trying to maintain my weight and am still just below my pre-pregnancy weight at 27 weeks pregnant, but I reckon I'll be putting on some (hopefully healthy baby) weight over the next few months :)

All the best.

If they advise you not to, don't do it! And maintaining your weight whilst pregnant is absolutely ridiculous- you are meant to put on weight! Just try to eat sensibly...

BeaWheesht · 12/05/2012 17:59

Its not ridiculous if you are significantly overweight to start with. I 'dieted' when pregnant with dd, at 34 weeks I had put on 2lbs. Dd was born weighing 9lb 4oz.

Ask mw for advice.

ValiumQueen · 12/05/2012 17:59

Dog eared - I am very overweight - BMI mid 30s, and I figure trying to maintain is a possibility - it certainly is with SW so why not WW. I am not aiming to lose any, and still have over a stone 'in the bank' so to speak. It is my third pg, I am not being silly or risking the health of my child.

If your midwife says it's okay then that's okay. But just remember not to be too down on yourself during your pg.
Sorry my post came across as twuntish. Congrats on your pg. :)

ValiumQueen · 12/05/2012 18:03

WW will not allow me to join, but the leader said she thinks this is daft as it could help a lot of people. She advised me to follow it but that was totally off the record. She could not advise me on points.

Thank you babies and well done bea

Swap to SW then?

ValiumQueen · 12/05/2012 18:18

Thank you DogEared I have found the health professionals less than helpful on issues of weight. At booking the MW did not even mention it, and suggested a water birth - I was offered this with my first only to be told at 38 weeks I was too fat. The MW this time said I was just cuddly - I do not want to be patronized, I want help and advice.

I my first two pregnancies I did not care about my weight - DD2 was 10lb 3 and I was told that was because I was so fat. I also had dreadful SPD and would like to avoid that. This is not about vanity, just health. This pg was a surprise as we had given up conscientiously trying. I was already losing weight when I found out.

Lovetats I do not get on with SW due to MS which I have throughout pregnancy. I was spending all my syns on bread so my food intake was so boring. I like WW more, but have only been on it 2 days, plus if baby wants macdonalds, it can have it!

I think I'm right in saying that on myfitnesspal you can switch your settings to pregnant and they'll give you the correct calorie intake. And it's free. Worth thinking about?

I was overweight during my 2nd pregnancy, and the midwife told me that as long as I didn't go under the proper calorie and vitamin intake, I could do as I liked. I know it's 2000 cals when you're not pg, and I think about 200 extra when you're pg. She said that to go under this was not a good idea as my body wouldn't have the fat or vitamins to pass on to baby.

Turned out not to be a problem as I became obsessed with Star Bars Blush

Lovetats · 12/05/2012 19:13

Ah, ok. I used to sniff ginger essential oil for my morning sickness as too much bread makes me go and eat shedloads of chocolate as does breathing in and out

ValiumQueen · 12/05/2012 19:17

Thank you DogEared and Lovetats - both excellent ideas.

They're about 270 cals I think Blush

I think its a good idea to make good food choices, but also important not to go hungry. I was told in my first pregnancy I had a higher risk of developing GD as I have PCOS so I ate very sensibly, no refined sugar at all, basically low GI diet, but I certainly wasn't going hungry. I wasn't overweight to start with, as I lost it doing a low GI diet when TTC. And yes I put on a lost less than in my 2nd and third pregnancies when I ate lots of boost bars!

I would have thought it was a good idea to cut out all the empty calories esp those that affect blood sugar (ie pasta, bread, sugar) and eat plenty of meat, fish, fruit, veg, eggs, dairy, pulses and some healthy low GI carbs eg brown rice, quinoa, oats.

My fitnesspal is a great idea, but think good food choices even more important, eg its possible to eat 3000 calories a day and be malnurished or eat 1500 and get adequate nutrition.
