Back from WW in tears

I'm so pissed off.

I've been going to ww since beginning of Feb. In total I've lost 4lbs.

I always put on when I have my period and I've got PCOS so find it hard to loose anyway.

Fair enough, I find it hard and if the weight doesn't come off its my own fault.

But the lady who weighed me made a big deal of the amount I've lost (or haven't lost) and actually blurted it out in front of everyone. She called over to the leader and said "she's only lost 4lbs since February"

How dare she? She then called another lady over and said "tell her how much you've lost" so the lady said to me "3 and a half stone since January"

Now that's fantastic, but this lady is very very big, at least 20 stone now.

Its made me feel shit and embarrassed and I totally feel like just giving up :(

I'd report her to ww head office, that attitude is disgusting. I thought they were suppose to be encouraging? 4lb since feb is great, you've lost and maintained that's the best way to loose weight safely and keep it off. I could starve myself and loose weight quick but It's a million times better to steadily loose weight.

Did 'she' sit down and go through your diet plan see if there's anything that could be stopping the weight loss? Perhaps eating certain foods are stopping your loss as quick? Not everybody's body processes food the same so I'd imagine the same principle applys for loosing weight aswell?

teaandthorazine · 09/05/2012 20:10

Y'know, this is why I hate WW and SW. I've got friends who go and end up feeling the same way as you do, humiliated if they've not lost 'enough'. And you pay for this?! It's bloody awful imo.

I think MN probably offers better support, tbh. Can I tempt you over to the payment-and-humiliation-free low-carb Bootcamp (and away from this low-fat con that doesn't work anyway Wink)?

Coops79 · 09/05/2012 20:14

Oh mumofjust1 that's just horrible. But pinkyp is absolutely right; slow steady weight loss is far more likely to be maintained. You're going in the right direction - that's all that matters. Oh and your WW leader is clearly a total bitch who is modelling herself on some awful Little Britain type character. Go once more in order to tamper with the scales and give her a mouthful then make your own group on line or with mates.

(PS: well done and don't give up because of bitchface).

SilentSinger · 09/05/2012 20:15

Have you thought about trying WW online rather than go to the meetings? I've never liked the idea of going to meetings and admittedly have never gone to any but I did do WW online and lost loads of weight a few years ago.

piratecat · 09/05/2012 20:15

Grini would also like to introduce you over to the my fitness pal support of this site.

i struggle terribly to shift anything, my body goes in to lock down after one week. Yet i am slowly losing, slowly and have since mid jan, i am not hugely overweight, about 2.5 stone, but i have lost 18 lbs. about a pound a week.

i would complain, and then give it up, find something that works better for you. There are lots of ladies trying differnt things on here, and it's not full of cows like the Matt Lucas character in Fat Fighters!!

a leader ??? reallly !! insensitive bitch. she can have a whole packet of Biscuit

piratecat · 09/05/2012 20:16

ha @ Coops and my advice.

my sister used to go to SW and swore the leader was such a cow, and really overweight to boot!!

Fizzybee · 09/05/2012 20:18

That's why I wouldn't go to meetings if it helps I'm doing an online version with closer (tesco) diets they give me meal plan options to choose for 7 days and I choose and they give me recipies and shopping lists and I do an online weigh in every week much cheaper to £2.50 a week I've paid 25 for a ten week membership and lost 10 in 3 weeks

mumofjust1 · 09/05/2012 20:18

Thanks pinky and tea x

I feel like a complete failure :(

I know she shouldn't have done that - there was a big queue of people right behind me too. I can't believe I didn't say anything to her at the time, but I was mortified.

I'm definately going to complain to the leader and probably to head office too.

The boot camp thread sounds interesting - will have a look, thanks.

TBH, if you have PCOS, then I'm not 100% certain WW is for you, mainly because it allows you to eat whatever you like within the points allocation.

PCOS, on the other hand, requires a really detailed eating plan that can work with your body to counteract the lack of insulin, so some foods are fine, some are okay in moderation, and some are no-go's.

Have you thought about seeing a nutritionist to help you put together a plan for you?

NoWayNoHow · 09/05/2012 20:21

Sorry, should have read "excess insulin", not lack of.

mumofjust1 · 09/05/2012 20:21

Sorry - I wasn't clear - it was the lady who sits at the scales that said it - but she shouted it over to the leader. I mean she didn't roar, but was slightly shouty as the leader was at the end of the long table

OP posts:
mumofjust1 · 09/05/2012 20:28

Noway - I didn't think of that.

I've been diagnosed with pcos but that was from a scan which showed classic polycystic ovaries. the d said however that my bloods are "within an acceptable range" maybe that has changed tho - I'm having a blood test in the morning.

I have other PCOS symptoms - odd periods, excess hair etc so assumed that my weight gain and slow, difficult loss was down to that.

The dr never gave me any medication or anything though - it was kind of left in limbo.

Maybe I'm just destined to remain a fat lump forever more :(

OP posts:
pinkyp · 09/05/2012 20:31

Please don't feel like a failure!! No one has the right to make you feel like that at all. Esp some silly woman who thinks she's god because they let her "in charge" of the scales. I'm glad your going to contact ww, make sure you point out the reason you originally went to meetings for support, help etc and how they made you feel to tonight.

Also don't forget to go to the meeting next week for your apology Grin

I wish I could loose 4lb AND keep it off for that long! I have no motivation at all, so the fact you started in feb and are still continuing with it now deserves a big well done in my book!!

littledolly · 09/05/2012 20:48

I couldn't read and not reply. I go to WW meetings & I have to say my experiences are totally different from yours.

My leader is so motivating & totally understands fitting the plan in with normal life. She is also very particular that only she weighs people & has a little chat with them at the scales about how they're getting on. She's a size 10-12 after having lost around 4 stone with WW herself. Even when I'm really pushed for time, I always try to stay for the talk as she puts so much effort into it and as a result the other group members are really encouraging too.

I know you probably feel really deflated about your weight loss, not to mention angry with that girl. Others have made more helpful & practical suggestions but I just wanted to let you know that your experience is not what it I've had with WW

NoWayNoHow · 09/05/2012 21:05

OP, have they done anything to manage the symptoms at all? Are you on an oral contraceptive, for example?

A lot of research seems to point to the fact that the root cause of PCOS is insulin resistance, which causes the pancreas to produce it in excess, which in turn causes excess testosterone and overproduction of a couple of other male sex hormones (hence the excess hair). BUT more importantly in terms of your health, it can lead to Type 2 diabetes.

When you have the appointment with regards to your blood tests, please speak to your dr and ask them what they can prescibe for you. There some medications (anti-androgens) which can help to lessen the production of the male hormones, but a nutritional plan is what will actually treat the root cause of PCOS. Just like diabetes, what you eat has an effect on your insulin levels, so cutting out different foods/eating some in moderation can have a massive impact on the condition and on your weight.

Before my friend was diagnosed with quite severe PCOS, she gained 10kg in a mere 3 weeks. After a strict nutritional regime, she lost all that weight and then some, and now she has found a really happy medium in between eating whatever she wants to the detriment of her body, and the ultra strict diet she was on. She's found a balance that means she's no longer slave to the out of control behaviour that PCOS causes in her body, but she's also not a slave to a daily regimented meal plan.

BTW, re: your WW meeting - I would definitely have a word with the leader, explaining your condition, and asking that her assistants be more sensitive in the future.

OP - the low fat message that WW promotes won't do your PCOS any good at all.

I would ask to see a dietician, but PCOS-induced weight often responds well to a lower carb diet.

smokinaces · 09/05/2012 21:24

I have PCOS. I can honestly say after years of dieting and trying all the plans, that low carb for me is what works. I have lost nearly 3 stone in total from doing it. The limited carbs mean that my blood sugar doesnt fluctuate, I dont get bloated or cravings and my skin/hair are better. I always thought it a "fad" before, but it is suprisingly easy to adopt and feel better on. and the weight does come off if you stick to it.

Thanks for your messages :)

Littledolly - I'm glad that your experience of ww has been positive :)

Noway - no I'm not on oral contraception, I can't take it due to migraines. The dr suggested that as my bloods were ok and periods regularish that there was no treatment needed unless I couldn't conceive. They did give me met or in but I never took it due to the side effects. Will talk to my GP again at my post blood test apt and look into low carbs, thank you.

Ali, smokin and seventh - thank you, will definitely look into low carb and try the book you mentioned seventh.

I have emailed the ww leader explaining how the situation made me feel. I'm paid up until the end of the month so will carry on until then I guess, just try and be extra good. We'll see what leader says if she emails me back.

Thanks again all, I feel a bit better now thanks to you lot :)

Got a reply back from the leader already!

Very sorry blah blah, please dont give up, please don't cancel, will have a word, she didn't mean it, you can do it, hard with PCOS but not impossible, I will call you, we can meet up to get a plan together etc.

At least she got back to me I guess.

OP posts:
foreverondiet · 09/05/2012 22:45

Totally unacceptable she should not have humiliated you like that.

I also have pcos, and IMO, WW not the right diet - low carb (or at least moderate) carb would work better, you'd probably lose 4lbs in one week. As others have said pcos is about insulin resistance so either need to do low carb atkins) moderate carb low fat (dukan) or low GI/low GL (hodford) any of these will work very effectively.
