Allen Carr weight loss- Anyone tried it?

Saw it today in a bookshop and had a bit of a browse, I know a few people who swear that his books/cd helped them to quit smoking and haven't gone back to it.

Last year I lost 2 stones with weight watchers, and slowly it is creeping back on and ideally I would like to lose a bit more before the summer holidays come around.

I know what I should be doing, but I just get bored and demotivated, so was thinking this might be good to help me focus. Has anyone tried it? Did it work?

Is that the diet where you see his face/hear that nasal squawk..... and vomit?

Cos I think i'm on that one anyway Grin

Haha sounds great! I haven't tried it but it could well be!

Have found the book and CD for cheap on ebay, so i think I will give it a try, sounds like it might put me off my food anyway! Grin

He certainly puts me off my food. I physically shudder, really my flesh crawls whan i see him or hear that whine that he thinks is a 'cute' voice.

Hahaha I see the mix up here!! Grin

You are talking about this Alan and I am talking about this Allen ! Can totally see where you are coming from now! Grin I'm not much of a fan either!

I've not tried the diet book but I did read the smoking book 8 years ago now and haven't smoked since. I don't know why it worked for me, but it did, and I've never been tempted to smoke again.

What I would say, is that I think it worked because I ABSOLUTELY did not want to smoke any more. If you have the same mindset about weightloss then perhaps this will work to?

Personally, I have recently lost 1.5 stone and am on my way to losing another half a stone. But I wanted to find my own way with that and regular gym sessions have worked for me - partly for calorie burning but mainly because exercising makes me feel happy and good about myself, and that in turn makes me want to manage my weight.

Good luck!

weirdscience · 26/04/2012 09:55

Thanks, that's really helpful, and good to hear the smoking one worked for you, well done on that and also your weight loss.

I think getting into the right mindset is half my problem, I know what I need to do, but just seem to really lack the motivation to just do it.

I am trying to up my exercise too and have put an app on my phone which measures the distance walked and I am averaging around 5k most week days, so if I try to do maybe something in the evening a few nights that should help too.

I've ordered the book now, and hopefully should have it soon, so I can get started.

The smoking one worked for me and was so good I bought the diet one. I browsed the diet book (mistake) and didn't bother reading it because the gist I got from it was that you should gradually stop eating regular food and eat mainly fruit and nuts. Also said to stop all caffeine, so no tea was a no no for me. Of course, if your diet consisted of most fruit and nuts then you would most certainly not be overweight. I have never heard anyone praise this book in the same way they do the stop smoking one. Save your pennies.

weirdscience · 27/04/2012 19:12

Hmm, fruit and nuts doesn't sound too good!

I had ordered the book and it arrived today, but I've not had a chance to look at it properly yet, but I will over the weekend. Perhaps it will convince me to eat fruit and nuts for the next few months and I'll get to an ideal weight before my holiday! Can only hope! Grin

I gave up smoking with his book so tried the diet one. It failed for me for 2 reasons.
Firstly, it basis some of the argument on the fact that God created us a certian way. Cant remember the exact details but if you dont believe in God its a bit of a no no. Part of the success of the smoking book was that I believed in every word of it, but not so for the diet one.
Secondly, he believes a vegetarian diet is the only way to lose weight so the book is set up to convince you to go veggie.
The smoking one worked as it was kind of like self hypnosis, the diet one relies too much on a do this do that approach and therefore didnt do it for me.

weirdscience · 28/04/2012 11:27

It's not sounding overly hopeful, I wonder if I could start believing in god and give up meat in order to have a decent beach body?? Grin

Not feeling to convinced but will try to keep an opened mind and see how it goes!

Hi weirdscience - did you read the book? Any results?

I read the smoking book and completely stopped 2 1/2 years ago. But I also read the book a few years before that and didnt stop.

I read the lossing weight book a while ago and it didnt work. But I am thinking about giving it another try.

Bumping this to see if there are any more views or opinions or stories of success or failure.

HeadShoulderHipsandCalves · 08/02/2024 21:21

If it had worked, readers wouldn't be in this section of Mumsnet would they?
