I need to lose weight and no matter what I do I can never lose more than a few pounds.

Snap - I seem to slide in and out of the "zone" much easier these days. Leading to lots of good intentions, good eating mon - thurs (sometimes) and bad weekends.

Hi

Sympathy. I'm the same. Most of the time, I just don't want to lose weight as much as I should. the drive isn't there.

Been thinking recently along the lines of finding other comforts to head for, to unlearn reaching for the sugar rush when tired or stressed. Got to find something as easy and quick but not unhealthy...

Also, I have tried drinking lots more water. Lots, lots more, and that does help. A lot of the time when I think it's a sugar craving, it's thirst.

IDontWantToBeFatAnymore · 12/04/2012 20:43

DH has pissed me off so I am eating biscuits Hmm.

tamitots · 12/04/2012 21:35

Whats wrong with a few pounds ??? The problem is we think I need to loose 2, 3, 4 or whatever stone and then get pissed off when we haven't done it in a week !!!!!!

Aim for 2 or 3 pounds, be happy with yourself for loosing it then aim for another 2 or 3 and repeat until needed.

If you have a bad day - stop - and start fresh the next one. Stop betting yourself up, and stop blaming DH for the biscuits, you are eating them not him lol xx

eating less by gillian riley. i'm not employed by her (honest)but this book has really helped me. having said that i did binge eat today but doing so much much less often.

fannybaws · 12/04/2012 22:36

Sugar is very addictive stuff, try eating protein at every meal, eat less sugar and refined carbs.
Eat slow releasing carbs instead of fast ones.
You will find that your need to eat rubbish will decrease rapidly.
It takes time but you will find your tastes will change .
Good luck.

I have to lose the weight for my health. I look to food to make me feel better and I know I have food issues but I haven't found a way to deal with them yet and by deal with I mean get rid of.

I am just doing my shopping list so any ideas would be great.

For breakfast I am having a large tin of grapefruit as I really feel like something fresh and need the fruit. I am getting a cold and haven't been eating anywhere near enough fruit.

I don't even know anything other than chicken is protein and pasta slow release carbs. That's the sum total of my knowledge Blush.

In my experience if I can go sugar free for three days or so the craving leaves me and everything feels so much easier. Sugar (including bread and pasta) is definitely addictive but it doesn't take too long to lose the craving.

It's all about small achievable goals. Think in half stones, not 5 stones.

IDontWantToBeFatAnymore · 13/04/2012 11:42

I think a big problem is not eating enough in the day and then wanting crap in the evening.

OP posts:
squoosh · 13/04/2012 12:06

It's also about retraining our brain. I used to love grazing mindlessly whilst watching tv in the evenings, you're not really aware of how many calories you're taking in that way.

Another thing that I stick to is not keeping any crap in the house. Your resolve can't crumble so much if you only have healthy snacks available.

And never go three hours without eating something.

fannybaws · 13/04/2012 13:10

Hi op pasta is not slow release:) protein is anything that was once moving around or laid! Chicken, turkey, ham, fish, eggs ect also cheese.
Slow carbs are vegetables, lentils whole grain rice/ pasta, lentils.
Anything white/ processed will up your blood sugar fast and cause a crash craving an hour or so later.
So for breakfast whole porridge, eggs, trimmed bacon.
Lunch hummus whole grain pita with salad, cottage cheese, olives, veg, homemade soup all good.
For dinner fish, meat, plus veg with a little rice or spuds if you like.
This will keep you full for longer and decrease your cravings.
Drink plenty fluids, not diet drinks though as though they do not contain sugar the artificial sweeteners do funny things too.
Fruit for between meals if you are hungry.
Try and move for an hour a day, walking, swimming anything this really helps too.
Good luck x

Blush told you I knew nothing. Thank you so much for posting that, it is so helpful. I will be making lists and already make soup so that is great. I am eating too many mints as well at the moment.

Is whole grain the same as whole wheat and brown rice/pasta?

I bought houmous today coincidentally to dip into with my celery.

My top tip is go shopping just after a meal and resist the temptation to buy sugary and fatty foods in the first place!

Don't go ages without food, either - if your blood sugar levels drop you will crave sweet things. Better to snack on half a dozen almonds or a raw carrot before you get hungry. Drinking tea helps stave off hunger pangs, too.

Most important of all - get out and about with activities. I comfort eat when I'm slobbing around doing nothing hides creme egg wrapper

Rooble · 13/04/2012 13:45

Everything that Fannybaws said really.
I could have written your OP 8 months ago - couldn't work out why I couldn't stop myself comfort eating. Then made the decision that I couldn't carry on like that. Threw the crap out of the house to avoid temptation. Kept hands busy (ironing) in the evenings. Ate high GI diet - lots of whole foods, fresh fruit and veg, lean protein. Did some exercise every day (even if only a good walk).
Lost about 1-2 lbs per week. Very rapidly lost the taste for sugar. My DH was v helpful - eg not buying treats, not opening bottles of wine etc
I'm not sure what kind of things motivate you but I motivated myself by vowing not to buy any clothes until I had lost at least 1.5 stones as to do so would be "a waste". Somehow I was really determined and can't describe how lovely and empowering it felt to go shopping at Christmas and reject things because I didn't like them quite enough - where previously I used to buy stuff not because I liked it but because it fitted.
Good luck with it. You need some steely determination for the first few days, but you can definitely do it

IDontWantToBeFatAnymore · 13/04/2012 13:51

Every time I try I lose weight for a few weeks and then zilch. Even if I am eating correctly and keeping busy. It is like there is a switch whichs holds on to my fat weight.

Do you keep a log of everything you eat? A lot of people use my fitness pal - I haven't - but did find that it was only when I wrote down every morsel I ate that I realised just how much I was eating.
Also may be an idea to keep an eye on your portion sizes. Eg a portion of soup is about 200mls - not a tureen-full - or a portion of dry pasta is about 60g. This is less than you expect, but you actually find that if you eat it slowly and with plenty of veg 60g is ample.

IDontWantToBeFatAnymore · 13/04/2012 19:16

I used too but the fitness pal didn't have everything on and tbh I know what I eat. I don't mindless eat. Well, I do but I know I have done it. ie I will eat a whole packet of crisps without realising it is finished but I won't eat a bag without knowing I have had crisps iyswim.

One more week until the kids go back to school and then exercise will become a daily activity.
