You can change. You just have to be in the right place to do it! I was obese for over 10 years and am almost at my goal of losing 5 stone. It has taken 8 months to do it and lots of will power. I tried lots of times before but always gave up. Relax and take the pressure off. You could try just starting again with no pressure. If it works it works and even just one day being healthy will do you good and then maybe one day will lead to another.

Good luck.

You are braver than me ...IWill I tried to go to the doctor about it as I seriously need help but couldn't do it I am so ashamed. I once plucked up the courage and went to the doctor, skirted round the issue and even made a joke of it but got no response. I eat nonstop, I have no willpower left. I used to but kept failing then I thought I will not diet because it just makes me fat but the weight just piled on. I am no help sorry but you are not alone, there is me Sad sorry not to be of any help.

I am trying right now. I am actually eating more because I make myself have breakfast and make myself have three healthy meals a day but I still find myself snacking, craving and gorging.

fraiserno · 09/04/2012 19:53

newpup sorry I forgot to say well done and please if there is anything you can say about your daily diet please post again.

IDismyname · 09/04/2012 20:02

I have given up with 'Diets', too. Waste of time. Far too much pressure, and far too expensive, too! I've lost weight and put it - and more - back on...

I have started to eat healthily. I bought a book written by Patrick Holford called "The Low GL Diet". Get it from Amazon. He does a recipe book, too, but you don't need that to start. My bro and SIL have lost loads of weight on it - I haven't lost so much, BUT, BUT, BUT - I feel like a million dollars.

Its all to do with balancing your blood sugar levels, so you don't eat a (for instance) mars bar, and want another one an hour later.

You give up all the crap in your life. You eat meat, fish, veg, brown rice, wholemeal bread, fruit, yoghurt, nuts - gin and tonics (yay!), plain chocolate. Fat is OK - so salad dressings ok, real mayo, OK.

Give it a month.... I've lost my PMS, my depression, dropped stress levels (and those have been sky high). Its an eating plan I intend to adopt forever.

Be brave - Give it a go!

OP I have been there myself so many times before.

Tell us what has and hasn't worked for you, and maybe we can help.

What excercise do you like? Can you find a way to incorporate a walk a couple of times a week if nothing else?

I always used to say "diets don't work for me" but the truth was, of course diets work if you stick to them. But I didn't have the willpower to.

I had to hit a crashing all time low before I found the determination to really do something about it, but when I did, low carbing worked for me and I went from nearly 17 stone to 13 stone (still need to lose more) in 3 months.

exexe · 10/04/2012 11:17

People will come on this thread and tell you whats worked for them but you've got to find something that works for you.

The one thing everyone will agree on is that you must stop eating junk.

Start thinking about health and nutrition.

You may find giving up sugar helps you.

You may find calorie counting and joining somewhere like myfitnesspal will help.

You may find getting out of the house more so you're not reaching for the biscuits helps.
The weather is getting better, go for long walks somewhere green if you can. It will help with lifting your mood and improve your fitness.

Most importantly, stop snacking and start eating 3 or 4 healthy balanced meals a day. Take regular vitamin supplements as you may be under nourished.

IWill (can't call you Whale), I am where you are...

The sad thing is, after more than 10 years of being obese I lost 5 stone three years ago. That was not the end, needed to lose at least another two. But life took over and I stopped dieting. But now I have put 3 of those back on and feel fat and lardy...So ideally need to lose another five stone. The thought feels overwhelming...
For the past month I have tried to cut out sugar, cut down on carbs, have not snacked, have walked and cycled whereever possible but I have actually gained weight.... I feel so sad I could cry...

So, am starting again. Am hoiking my considerable bossom and looking back at what I did three years ago. I calorie counted. I cut down on biscuits and snacks and I cut out all alcohol. And I walked for an hour every day. I also swam 50 lenghts at our local pool at least twice a week and cycled on the local cycle paths for an hour once a week or twice if possible.
Three years ago I did not work so I had time to exercise, I now work every day so will have to make time later afternoon / early evening. Won't go swimming though, pool has become semi privatised and I just cannot afford the extortionate peak time charge rub against fellow swimmers... (shudder at the thought)

But I must do this. I have some fab skits that I am desperate to wear that won't do up Sad

Shall we do this together?

Behind- yes please! When do you want to start??

I just want to say something as I read your thread this morning and wanted to add.

I am also greedy (greedy is ok isn't it) but I put on a few stones when pg with dd that I couldn't lose after. I thought after having her I would naturally lose the weight but it really didn't happen.

I began low carbing and the weight drops off. I don't exercise at all (unless you count walking from the car park into Sainsbos) yet from end of Feb till now I am loads slimmer.

There is science to low carbing (lots of advice about this on tinterweb, Mumsnet natch, Dr Briffa etc) so it is less of a diet and more lifestyle thing. The science bit seems to run thus; plate of pasta the body processes into sugar
and lays FAT on the middle torso bit, ie tummy/oh and thighs/arse for some reason.

If you eat high pure protein meals, meat, fish and eggs, you are filled up for longer. You need plenty of fat too so mayo, butter is cool too.

Plain chocolate, vodka, red wine, are your friends. Salted peanuts ok.

The best bit is after a little while, two weeks or so, your body adjusts to it and the cravings for high carb and fat (jacket potato and cheese etc, a bag of Walkers Cheese and Onion) stop.

Your body remembers how it's meant to work without all the carby shite you put into it.

Please please look into it, there is no reason to be hungry calorie counting trying to be thin. Smile

foreverondiet · 11/04/2012 02:21

Oh dear Sad. Completely agree with Agnes

I think low carbing is better than calorie counting (for science read dr briffa, but in a nutshell eating carbs increases insulin in body and carbs get converted into fat) for weight loss for people who find diets hard - because it provides clear guidance about what to eat (black and white) and no need to count or weigh food.

I like dukan for weight loss (although with eating non carby veg every day not just protein every second day like he suggest, IMO following dukan protein days too faddy).

Dr Briffa good for weight maintenance and lifestyle (ie add fruit, nuts and seeds). It has to be long term lifestyle choice, calorie counting likely to lead to regaining once diet is over.

Also Paul Mckenna good for motivation - don't eat anything unless actually hungry!

AgnesBligg · 11/04/2012 02:34

Oh must return the compliment, agree totally with forever Smile.

ToryLovell · 11/04/2012 08:34

For anyone wanting to do a quick weight shift, BIWI has got a low carb boot camp starting Monday.

Two weeks only so it is not too tough.
