I feel like I physically can't get through the day without copious amounts of chocolate, sweets, biscuits. Yesterday I ate almost a whole block of marzipan because there were no biscuits etc. in the house. Blush

Needless to say I am overweight, mainly around the tummy. does anyone have any advice on how to get off the sugar? I really really crave it! any ideas welcome please please!!

I'd advise Atkins. The first few days will probably be hell for you since it sounds like you're a hard core carb addict but you'll feel better than you ever have afterwards.

SparkyMcSparrowLaidMiniEggs · 04/04/2012 11:36

Cold turkey.

First few days are hell. You will get withdrawal headaches and immense cravings, but once you get past these first few days you will feel amazing and its compleatly worth it!!

Its the only way to do it. You 'cut down' slowly and you will never stop!

PosiePaques · 04/04/2012 11:37

Or Dukan. Or perhaps tone down the refined sugar for fruit?

[don't know why I'm commenting I am completely addicted to sugar, the only thing I can do is not have any in the house and not go and buy petrol!!)

SparkyMcSparrowLaidMiniEggs · 04/04/2012 11:38

I agree with that! Chuck it all out and don not buy any more. If its not in the house you can't eat it.

For cravings have some fruit or a huge glass of water. Or brush you teeth!

NigellasGuest · 04/04/2012 11:56

have had a brief google of both Atkins and Dukan. Which is the least complicated? Dukan seems to want you to subscribe and pay £££ - can you do it with just a book or something?

Yes I do need to chuck it all out and go cold turkey. I will have to get the whole family on board though - I think DCs should be allowed some biscuits though and that means having them in the house Confused (the biscuits not the DCs)!

I feel like doing Atkins or Ducan or something, to give me some sort of framework to get me going - although really I should save the bother and just NOT EAT SUGAR/CARBS. Easier said than done....

Tell your dcs that you are having a healthy week and no biscuits! They don't need biscuits and it gives you a chance to get you head round no more crap. Once your ok then get them ones you don't like.

It will do you all good!

cybbo · 04/04/2012 12:08

Agree cold turkey. On the occasions I ahve done it its really works.

of course I wouldjoin you, but Ive just had a hot cross bun and a funsize bag of maltesers

I know! Easter coming up with all those lovely choccy eggs. I love the texture of thin chocolate eggshell. this could be absolutely the worst time of year to be considering this.....

Why are you keeping sugary things at home if you know you will be tempted to eat them? I have just started the Alizonne diet I feel AMAZING. I have stopped all sugar, cakes, biscuits etc and swapped it for veg and salad and lots of water. I cannot tell you how much better I feel not having copious amounts of sugar in my bloodstream.
Get rid of all the bad stuff and swap it for health food?..

Good luck x

PostBellumBugsy · 04/04/2012 12:17

Atkins is very straightforward - basically you stop eating refined carbohydrates & sugars.

I would strongly suggest you start on Easter Monday or Tuesday though - as I think for a chocolate / sugar addict you will find it impossible to get through Easter without indulging your habit! Wink

willbeskinny · 04/04/2012 12:28

I make sure I buy the kids biscuits and treats which I dnt like. It's not fair on them to have to go without, so I buy fig biscuits (boak), nice, custard creams. All the ones I cnt stand. It's the only way. I made the mistake of buying some McV choc digestives at supermarket last night. It is not going to end well :-(

PosiePaques · 04/04/2012 12:38

I may still have a book on PDF of Dukan.

NigellasGuest · 04/04/2012 13:24

Really Posie? where did you download it from?
I'm finding Dukan the more appealing sounding regime TBH. Could be the french element!
good idea willbeskinny about buying yukky bisucuits - I am also not bothered about custard crreams and can definitely leave them!!

I saw a Dukan Diet book in the works for £3.99 the other day.

foreverondiet · 04/04/2012 19:58

I agree need to go cold turkey, and cut out all grains for a bit.

Do not subscribe to the dukan website, its a con, just buy the book.

Dukan is good if you like dairy like yoghurt or cottage cheese. I did it last year and maintain weight easily still loosely following it although do have fruit now and some extras.

Atkins better if you like hard cheese.

I don't find I eat the DC's snacks, although actually I don't always have biscuits or crisps for them. Sometimes they have to eat fruit yoghurt or crackers if they are hungry Shock!!!!

Bunbaker · 04/04/2012 20:04

I agree with Sparky and others who have suggested going cold turkey. I give up all sweet things every Lent. After a week I don't miss them at all and it is very easy. I also agree with the suggestion that you don't buy anything sweet - just avoid going down the supermarket aisles with sweet goodies in. It will be easier to resist temptation if it isn't in front of you.

Another tip I read somewhere was to eat a banana if you have a chocolate craving.

Jinsei · 04/04/2012 20:09

I am trying to deal with this at the moment -was doing really well but had a bit of a relapse. Am going to start properly again after Easter. Someone on here linked to a site called radiant recovery - google it if you're interested. I haven't been following it to the letter (hence the relapse? Blush) but I have found it helpful. Good luck! :)

foreverondiet · 04/04/2012 20:23

if you are having a chocolate craving better to have some 85% chocolate than a banana which is very high in carbs and fruit sugar. Cold turkey means no fruit, esp bananas.

NigellasGuest · 04/04/2012 22:03

I am now officially cold turkey.
Have been reading the Dukan book - I love yogurt, especially natural with honey; not bothered about hard cheese - take it or leave it. So will see how it goes with the Dukan for a bit...I hope it does allow fruit at some point because I love fruit and can't imagine living withouit it!!

Read this link it will pt you off sugar for life.

BehindLockNumberNine · 08/04/2012 11:09

Yikes!! Just read the link. I too am a sugar addict and don't know how to stop.

Do I need to cut out all sweet things such as honey, fruit, fruitjuice?

I can understand cutting out refined carbs / sugar such as biscuits, cakes, chocolate etc. But fruit....?

Not sure I could live without fruit tbh...
