Dh reached his goal this weekend - 9kg lost since January! He's really pleased and clearly afterall that hard work does not want to put it all back on again as so often happens.

His intention is to increase his calories allowance by 100Kcals a day every week till he gets back up to full allowance, should take 5 weeks.

Apart from sheer willpower what is the key to success in maintaining the loss? Can anyone share their top tips?

I don't think calorie counting works. He'll probably put it back on when he stops watching calories whenever that is. I think to maintain you have to change WHAT you eat. By changing this, you naturally eat less. Sheer willpower doesn't work in the long term.

Read "Escape the Diet Trap" by John Briffa. Paul Mckenna also good for focusing on only eating when actually hungry and avoiding overeating.

Other tips - weekly weigh in so can take action when a few pounds gains.
Resistance training ideally every day.

FWIW my DH (who wasn't overweight at all) lost 4kg just by incorporating some of John Briffa's food ideas and doing daily resistance training - just pull ups and press ups etc while watching TV!

Thanks Forever have ordered those two books from the library.

MFP has helped dh realise where he is making the "wrong" choices, he has increased the protein in his diet and lowered the carbs. He is eating smaller portions and tries to stay physically active. I suspect he will calorie count for a while, just to get an idea of the amount of food he can eat before gaining.

Yes, its about making good food choices. Yes to increasing protein and lowering carbs. Good idea to log what he eats for a bit to get idea of how much food would make him gain.
