Lost lots of weight, but now being told I am too thin

I am in the middle of the BMI so weight wise I am not underweight and I think I look really well. However, my bum is saggy and my legs are really skinny. I am still a size 12/14 so not drastically thin but I was a size 18/20 six months ago.

Hospital dietician says I have to put on a few more kilos. Family say the same.

I am not eating the huge quantities of food I used to, I dont need to and I dont want to and my diet is varied, albeit limited because of many restrictions from dietician.

What would you do? Would you put weight back on to please others, or be happy with the new way you look?

Serious health issues was cause of weight loss rather than dieting.\

I have to eat 6-8 small meals/snacks a day rather than 3 main meals.

i lost 4 stone, i got told i was too thin, FIL said ' you have no arse'

i think ...who are these people to think they can comment on me like this - would you do it to them?

if you are happy - fuck them

fuckthem right up the arse.

I'm interested to know why the dietician wants you to put on a few kilos. Surely she knows the BMI scale goes down to 18.5?

What was her explanation?

I've heard of people who are still in the overweight category that people have told to stop dieting, you've gone too far, etc.

I think a lot of it is insecurity on their part, and even dare I say....Envy

I lost nearly 3 stone over a year ago, and people said I was too thin. I looked haggard, I had no arse, and wrinkles and sags were appearing all over the place.

I found it really heard to let go of the idea that losing weight=good, putting on weight=bad, even though I could see that I was not looking my best. I can sort of understand anorexia now.

It's taken a year of gradually allowing myself to eat more healthy food, and have a few treats, but I've put on half a stone, and look alot better for it.

There's no rush to put weight back on. You need to overcome your health issues first in any event, and make sure you're eating enough healthy food for your body to recover

I am really surprised that the dietician wants you to gain a few pounds if you are a size 12/14 which is hardly underweight ( I am 5 ft 9, large frame i.e big hands, feet, wrists etc and am size 12/14 and could do with losing 7lbs tbh)

Did you ask they hopspital diuetician why she wants you to gain weight? I think the family comments are irrelevant but the professional point of view is important. She may have a reasonable reason for the suggestion.

Meant to add - I lost 4 stone some time ago. Most said I looked amazing but a fair few chided me with 'dont lose any more you will look gaunt'....which was nonsense, I am no way near gaunt. I think people have a mental picture of you as a larger person and hence the contrast when you lose weight startles them. However if they had met the slim you for the very first time as a stranger they would consider you slim not gaunt - if that makes sense?

Why not gain some muscle mass? Muscle mass is lost along with fat when weight is lost

I lost 4 stone, my BMI is now 20 (was 30) - but I have great muscle tone.

Iamseeingstars · 04/03/2012 19:05

Dietician concerned because I lost more than 10% of my body weight in less than 2 months. But no matter what I eat I cant put weight on anyway, even if I wanted to

Muscle mass is the answer but this will take time as I am still not very active after illness

In six months I have lost about 20kg

Custardcuddly - you made me laugh - my "arse" has disappeared as well. This is why I can now fit into children's clothing because before hand my bum was huge

Odd thing to say - while losing weight too quickly isn't the best idea, surely putting it back ON isn't going to 'fix' that?

Iamseeingstars · 04/03/2012 19:14

Totally agree. That's why it's good to hear views from other people.
