Lost all the weight, but now i can't relax

Finally got down to my target weight, but for some reason i don't feel happy. Just quite worried about putting the weight back on and finding it hard to increase my food intake and have the odd treat. I just wan't to relax and enjoy my food again, but there is a barrier there. Has this happen to anyone else?

I'm sorry to tell you this but, for most people, once you've been fat you have to watch what you eat for life if you don't want to put the weight back on.

Fluffy1234 · 28/02/2012 11:44

It will happen. I was like that for a while but learnt to relax quite a bit but then be mega good on Mondays.
I actually missed my diet and the weight loss each week but now I am buying clothes in my new size it is really helping and the weight loss seems more real.

cheermeup · 28/02/2012 12:41

Thank you for the replies. Are you very good all week then allow yourself a few treats at the weekend Fluffy? And do you manage to maintain your weight like that?

Thats exactly what I do. I still don't touch chocolate, cakes, biscuits or icecream but do have crisps most weekends. I didn't think I would enjoy eating anything ever again but it does come back slowly. I now look on it as if I put on a bit at the weekend I have all week to shift it as I now know how to. Plus I do things like if I'm going to the cinema and want a tray of the nachos and sauce I will be really good all that day. Or at the weekend if I'm eating out I may just have a nice starter if I am full from the day before.
Since 3rd January my weight has stayed at 9 stone 3 pound and I lost 60 pounds last year.

Thanks Fluffy, i am starting to see the light! Well done with your weight loss, and sticking to it!

You're in a transitional stage still.

Just be nice to yourself and you will learn to relax.

Going clothes shopping when you are feeling tense won't be relaxing as you'll be doing something to do with your weightloss.

Replace the idea of treats from foodstuffs, to trips, books, music, and other non food items.

Reward yourself this spring by putting in some rose bushes or fancy plants in your garden, or flower boxes. You'll enjoy them every summer.

Fluffy1234 · 28/02/2012 13:04

Thankyou and hope you start enjoying your achievement soon.

Well done for getting to your target weight!!
It is hard to start eating normally, I know as I'm in much the same position as you, I've lost around 4.5 stones and am now at my target weight and I still get a bit nervous at eating some things in case it (this is what my irrational head tells me) make me suddenly balloon!!

But I know that if I eat within my daily allowance the weight will not go on although sometimes knowing that doesn't help, but you will slowly start to eat normally and if you find yourself putting weight on then cut back slightly.

I don't eat the way I did before obviously not the quantity but also not the same types of food. I can't stuff my face with high fat and high calorie food now if I want to maintain my weight. I eat much more protein, not so many carbs and lots of veg.

Sometimes I have chocolate, but I know that I can't eat the whole family sized bar. I will probably have to be careful forever about making sure the weight doesn't come back on because I don't want to be one of the 80 or 90% of people who have lost weight only to regain it all or more!
At the same time I want to enjoy my life and go out for a nice meal, because I now have lots of lovely new clothes and they are no use to me if I don't go out anywhere! It's not easy to make the adjustment but I'm sure it will come.

Also I think it's important to do exercise (if you don't already), I now run, not very far I can do 25-30 minutes but I'm trying to build it up and I also do weight training. This not only makes me look better Grin but when I run in the morning I don't want to eat crap for the rest of the day, but at least if I do eat more than I should it won't have much effect.

foreverondiet · 28/02/2012 18:18

I could have written that post. What works for me is eating whatever I fancy on the weekends and if we go out for dinner / socially etc in the week and being careful the rest of the time. And I stand on the scales every day apart from sat and sun. Even if I totally overindulge at the weekend I put on 6lbs which I easily lose during the (obviously not every weekend!) and if I end up not eating much at the weekend I enjoy a treat each day, eg some ice cream!

AuntFini · 28/02/2012 20:12

I spent 4 months losing 2 stone and have just put it on IN ONE MONTH!!! I don't think i've even eaten that badly, and I've done exercise all the time. So I'm starting again. It's so upsetting but I'm going to the doctors as well as I don't think it's normal to have gained that much. Hopefully it comes off quickly and I'll be more careful next time. I'm so shocked though.

foreverondiet · 28/02/2012 21:19

auntfini sadly totally normal to put on quickly after weight loss diet (what sort did you do?) - body has sensed starvation is over and seeks to replenish its fat stores.

Should def weight weekly after diet ends and if you see weight going up can take steps immediately to deal with. If you are doing calorie controlled diet need to gradually up the calories, if you are doing low carb, gradually add some low GI unprocessed carbs.

cheermeup · 29/02/2012 12:05

Thank you everyone. It is good to know these feelings are normal. I have started cycling 1 hour 3 times a week and i really enjoy it. It is true that you feel more inclined to eat healthily if you exercise more. Good luck AuntFini. I hope you succeed with your weight loss.

Auntfini, I didn't think it was even possible to put on 2 stone in 1 month!!! How did you lose the weight in the first place?
The only thing I can think of is that you maybe ate more than you think you did, you would have to eat according to our new weight so if you ate more or less the same as you did when you were 2 stone heavier then maybe the weight would come back on quicker.

I do agree with forever, you should gradually introduce more foods to get your body to adjust.
But really unless you ate nothing for the 4 months then suddenly started to eat loads of food for the month then the weight shouldn't have gone back on like that. If you eat 1500 cals or even 1200 cals you're not starving Grin

AuntFini · 29/02/2012 15:38

I lost with weight eatchers. I'm massively disappointed and so shocked, I was only losing at a rate of 1-2lbs a week so nothing drastic. I had been running every other day and swimming 4 times a week as well.

I can't even fathom how it's been possible. I'm counting points agaain now, I'm definitely going to continue point counting after I get to goal again. Sigh. I have a doc appointment tomorrow too.

Sorry to derail!

Blatherskite · 29/02/2012 15:56

I'm having the same worries. I've been doing Weightwatchers and am 8lbs from goal now but I'm worried that either I won't know how to start eating to maintain by the time I'm finished or I'll revert back to my old ways and put the 2st back on again in weeks.

I'm doing it online so no free 'gold' membership once I've reached goal but I'm tempted to carry on paying for a month or two to help me maintain my goal weight.

VeryStressedMum · 29/02/2012 17:20

I do know how you feel because 'I worry about the same too. I've lost 4.5 stones and it's a major headache to try and stay at this weight!
I have to think about what I eat, make sure I've got all the right foods in the house, count how many calories I have eaten and roughly how many I have left and I have to keep up my running and weights routine. If anything it's harder work now that I have lost the weight!!

But I'm determined to maintain my weight, so I have to accept that I will have to monitor it for possibly the rest of my life. It's easy to do a few years ago I lost over 2 stones and in the following 2 years I put 4 stones back on!!!!!! I have now lost that and a bit more and it will be the last time!

Gradually you'll realise that you can eat a bit more than you were without putting weight back on, and if it starts to creep on then yo know you are eating too much for your needs.

Blatherskite, I would do that as it's a good idea to get used to eating for your new weight while being monitored. It's not a waste of money.

Good luck Auntfini. xx

Sorry think I repeated most of my previous post there! Didn't remember what I had written. Smile
