I know I know. I am very sad, but I quite like reading diet books. It seems to motivate me for a while Blush

Have you any favourite books you recommend?

I have already read Blush Zoe Harcome, India, Dukan and Paul Mckenna.

Forgive the lack of question mark in the title. (ooops)

I'm reading Escape the Diet Trap by John Briffa. Very,v very interesting so far. I have Wheat Belly on order, looking forward to that. After payday I want to order another- I have several books like this, this, this, this, and this in my Amazon wishlist! Plus I get them from the library.

Thanks Scarf,Grin ooh you sound like me Grin
What is the Gary Taubes one like Scarf?
I have just bought Marissa Peers on Kindle. I thought I would try a new approach.
I quite fancy Escape the Diet Trap also.

I love diet books have read most -

I need to know more though about what sort of stuff you are interested in how overweight you are and what sort of diet you want to follow.

Ideas based on what you said above - south beach, lean and clean, adore yourself slim, tom venuto, jillian michaels master your metabolism.

Hi, Forever. Thanks, I am about 1 stone, (ideally though 1 1/2 stone)over weight, but put weight on very easily and struggle to lose without cutting drastically. To complicate matters, though I have fibromyalgia (like CFS) so try to stay away from wheat anyway and suffer with sinus issues. (I have mentioned this because I was thinking dairy could be a culprit.)
I quite like diets with rules but struggle to keep to them long term. I can do really well all day and then when hubby comes home it goes to pot. So I like to read things that keep me motivated.

I can do quite well with the NLP approach as gave up bread the PM way.
I like the idea behind the blood type diet but can't seem to buy into it.
However, would love to find a diet where you magically feel great.
Hope this all makes sense [hmmm]

I haven't read anything of Gary Taubes yet but I've seen it recommended a few times on minimins so thought I'd try!

Jealous you only have a bit to lose, I'm 2.5st less than I was in December- but I still have 3-4st to lose! I'm on a strict diet but I read all the books to keep me motivated. I love going and looking at the health section in bookshops and just adding all the diet books on amazon....

alfiemama · 27/02/2012 14:07

Sorry Scarf, I was distracted with someone coming to the door.
2.5 stone since December is an amazing loss. Which diet do you follow?

I love books in general. Unfortunately, I am dangerous with my kindle. I also love to go to the book shops. I'm like a kiddie in a sweet shop. Hubby says my eyes light up at the rows and rows of books.Blush

The Tom Venuto book and Jillian Michaels great for explaining what you need to do to stay slim longterm - exercise plus basically healthy eating, nothing processed and only carbs (grains) if you exercise.

I also like the south beach diet - very healthy and not faddy at all.

I think the best diet is the natural one. No wheat or gluten and no sugar. Limited (or no dairy). Meat, poultry, fish, pulses, eggs, veggies, nuts, seeds, fruit. Grains like brown rice, quinoa and buckwheat if needed. Natural fats only: olive oil, coconut oil, butter. Obviously fruit, nuts, seeds and fat not good for weight loss but fine in maintenance phase.

Why does it go wrong when your DH comes home. My DH eats the same as me in the evening (I cook it!) but he might have a bowl of cereal at 10pm if he's hungry which is fine by me.

alfiemama · 27/02/2012 14:17

Thanks forever, sounds good.
He is a feeder Grin I cook our meals, but he will snack late at night, or suggest a take away or sit and eat chocolate and wine. I can have amazing will power and know what works for me, but as soon as I come of low carb, BAM! It goes on double.
I bought the Marissa Peer book as someone on Amazon said she puts you off the bad food by putting disgusting thoughts in your mind. As I'm quite a visual person, I think this would work for me.

Thanks forevernadiet.....I just downloaded the Venuto book on your recommendation. I have been looking for a good book to take me to the next step.

Also thanks for the tip about thyroid blood tests. I actually had end this morning and after reading what you said, did not take my mess before I went. It will be interesting to see the result as this is the first tests I have had since loosing over 100 pounds.

I also recommend Escape the Diet Trap. If you're having trouble sticking to gluten free then Wheat Belly is well worth a read - it'll put you right off the stuff.

alfiemama · 27/02/2012 16:09

Thanks Kotinka, I have read India and Neris. I really enjoyed it but again didn't end up sticking to it. Blush I got a bit bored being on phase 1 for too long.

Atkins, I read the first one years ago but hated it to be honest. I have also read somewhere that high-fat foods are not good for arthritic conditions.

Queenstromba thanks, I am now very intrigued by both. Does the Diet trap one just tell you how your body works? also with regards to gluten free, I shied away from them because they always look quite high in cals and carbs.

It's good to know I'm not the only one obsessed with Diet self help books. Grin

alfiemama - re: your DH being a feeder - WTF - can't you explain to him the impact he is having on your diet.

ScarfOfSexualPreference · 27/02/2012 19:12

alfiemama I'm on a VLCD called Slim and Save. Drastic measure but needed. Not recommended for you though, with so little to lose!

kotinka Thanks! No one ever gets the reference though Grin

My copy of Wheat Belly just arrived, will be reading that as soon as I've finished Escape the Diet Trap!

alfiemama · 27/02/2012 19:13

forever, I think I painted him in a bad light. He is good really, just likes his choccy biccies which then makes me hungry. We also like to cosy up with a bottle of wine together.

OP posts:
foreverondiet · 27/02/2012 19:17

My DH likes his biscuits too and chocolate. But he knows I don't want to eat them so would never encourage. And he'll say something like - do you really want to eat that - if I eat something I said I didn't want.

My copy of escape the diet trap arrived also today.

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 27/02/2012 19:31

The Secrets of Skinny Chicks by Karen Bridson.

It's not a diet but very eye-opening and motivating.

alfiemama · 28/02/2012 12:18

Thanks mychild I will check out that book. Thanks.
Well I am finding Dr John BIfa book amazing. Really good. Has anyone changed to his approach and had success? Forever i see you're on Dukan, Dr BIfa suggests high fat will you change do you think?
Sorry on iPhone

Yesterday I bought a book called 'But I Deserve This Chocolate!' by Susan Albers. All about the excuses we make about why not to lose weight, why not to start today etc. Good read so far!
