I have found my breaking point. I need to loose weight.

So I plucked up the courage and stepped on the scales (14st 7lb). According to the very hi-tec scales I should be between 8st 10lb and 11st 1lb for my height of 5ft 5.5in. I have a 5mth old baby and now is the time!

Have any of you been in this position before? Have you done it alone or as part of a weight loss club? I realise I have a hell of a lot to loose but I am determined to do it. So far I have cut out (for a whole day!) sweet treats and plan to stick to 1400 calories.

I reached my breaking point last may (2011) when my GP tried to weigh me but his scales didnt go high enough. I joined Weightwatchers next day and weighed in at 25st9lb. I was so disgusted with myself that i have stuck to the ww plan religiously. Even over xmas. I need the help of a group, i couldnt do it alone. I also find it helpful to stick to the allocated points rather than the free food allowed on slimming world.
I also do some exercise 3/4 times aweek. I started off just walking the kids to school then fast walking home with the buggy but have now joined a gym and am doing the C25K running programme.
I am so determined this time that i will not fail. So far ive lost 6st11lbs.
Are you BF? if so you'll need more calories. Does anyone you know go to a slimming group?

OhTheConfusion · 23/02/2012 11:01

Hi Vaj (loving the name!),

Well done on your achievements so far... wow!

I have stopped bf so that's not an issue but I don't know anyone who is already at a slimming group. I did try a class in 2010 but everyone was pretty much at target weight and not overly friendly :(

I have increased my walking already and plan to do a boxercise session once a week but seem to be hungrier today having had a breakfast as opposed to having skipped it!

Can I ask how old you are? I have 18mths to I hit 30 and have decided it's now or never.

Hi confusion. I'm at breaking point. Have about 3.5 stone to loose. Have been messing around since January trying to go it alone and have been wondering about going to a slimming group. I have done ww before and lost loads of weight for my wedding and now its all back on again :( I really don't want to count points again as it bugs me, so I'm joining slimming world tonight.

OhTheConfusion · 23/02/2012 11:15

Hi morecoffee,

I may need to join you! Wish I knew someone in my area to go with or to buddy up with exercise together. All I can think about is food!!!

I'm 32. I spent most of my teens and all of my 20's being obese and i cant believe i allowed it to happen. But i cant change the past i can only change my future.
I hate spending all day thinking about food it makes the day go so slowly. What did you have for breakfast? I didnt like it at first but love it now is having porridge for breakfast. It really does keep the munchies at bay. I have a cuppa and snack of fruit mid morning but i think thats more out of habit than a need to eat.

OhTheConfusion · 23/02/2012 12:07

I had two weetabix with a scraping of butter (I hate soggy cereal) but I do like porridge so will pick some up for later in the week.

I had two belvita breakfast biscuits with a glass of water at 11.30 and so far seem to be coming in at 420kcal. Have soup planned for lunch with an apple and then homemade 'healthy' curry for dinner (I can enjoy watching the family eat nan bread!).

Think I also need to up my fluid intake.

Sounds like me, January 16th 2009. I decided I'd had enough, weighed in at 16st 10lb (think I'll always remember these stats!)

I lost 4st over a year, to be honest a 9 month period as I kind of lapsed... I started off low-Gi as I'd been advised to try, for my PCOS. The I discovered Rosemay Conley, which is also low Gi but has the benefit of exercise in the classes. I never thought I could do group exercise, or anything like that, but as it was part of the slimming club there were all sizes and ages there some a lot bigger than me so it was great. I did two classes a year but... the times changed and one class on the weeknd closed, so I had to stop going. I cheated and was crap and then lost my job and my home and moved abroad!

Anyway in December last year I kind of had that revelation again. Weighed in at 15st, not as bad as before (my highest weight ever in my life was 21st when I was 19) but still, I'm 5'2!

I started low gi, low cal, low fat then did a ton of research into the right diet for me. I started doing a VLCD which is pretty dramatic but works for me so far. Not for everyone, not even for most people. But I feel so much better on it, I've lost over 2 stone since December and I feel awake and lively all the time, and never am all bloaty and crap.

Am researching plan for when I get to goal- or close to goal- and am seriously considering low-carb. Makes so much sense to me after all these years trying on low-cal alone. I'm reading several books on the subject and I really hope it helps when I get there. I'm already low-carbing now, thats what a VLCD does but it's very different having food from packets to cooking for yourself.

OhTheConfusion · 23/02/2012 15:03

Thanks Scarf,
I don't think I could do the VLCD (I had to google it). I would really like to try and keep the family meals simmilar if I can (Just minus the good bits for me).

Now all I need is a diet buddy in Devon!

I'm sure you'll find someone, have you looked at minimins? It's my lifesaver right now! All the support I need, no way I'd have got this far without that support.

I would recommend having a look at Rosemary Conley, can offer a lot of support. Even if not getting to a class the mag once a month is great, I found it really useful and still buy it now!

foreverondiet · 23/02/2012 22:36

I was 12 5 when DS2 (DC3) was 6 months old. I am 5 foot 4. I got down to 8 10 (took around 6 months) and have maintained the weight for almost a year now, which is a stone lower than my pre-pregnancy weight!

Tips - myfitnesspal write down and weigh everything. Join MFP thread on this board.

Cut out sugar, grains and limit fruit and starchy veg.

I get my carbs from dairy and veg. I will be lowish carbing forever. Now that I am at target I can go off road at weekends, and also have fruit every day but I don't eat grains.

And 30 day shred or some other exercise

Hi confusion. I braved the meeting on my own and it was fine. Got all the info and seems quite straightforward and no calorie counting (or points!) Weight was awful! 14 stone 8lbs! My biggest ever. I will not weigh that amount again EVER!

OhTheConfusion · 24/02/2012 10:40

Well more coffee I have went to a meting this morning too... a few women made small talk but no one really chatted other than one woman who asked would I always be bringing DD as some of the others (but not her Hmm) frown upon it.

I am 14st 7lb and now officially ON A DIET!

Forever, can I ask why you limit fruit and no grains? Need all the tips i can get.

I was at that point last Easter. I cut all chocolates, sweets, biscuits, crisps, cakes etc and lost a stone in 3 months. Then I cut portion size and most carbs and lost 3 stone 4 pounds in 5 months. Going from 13 and a half stone to 9 stone 3 pound.
I found it best to go completely cold turkey with the sweet stuff as I was really addicted to sugar. It was hell for 2 weeks but then got a lot easier. Once I got rid of the sugar I cut carbs and then my appetite reduced significantly making things a lot easier.
My biggest tip is to say to yourself dieting does get easier and it is worth it. I am 42 and just went shopping for holiday clothes and everything I brought is a size 10. I haven't been this size since I was aged 26.
I also reward myself with non food treats such as magazines, candles, bubble bath or I paint my nails in the evening while watching tv instead of scoffing chocs.
Good luck.
