how do you stick with eating fruit and not crisps?

I really want to know how to change my habbits and tastes I guess. I have bought lots of fruit and we have run down the "junk" in the house and I would like to stop eating crap and drinking diet pop.

but how do you stick with it as right now I really could eat some toast and not a lovely healthy yogurt and grapes!

what makes you change what you want?

Can't you have one round of toast and some fruit? That way you won't feel like you are missing out but won't be going OTT on carbs either.

winnybella · 22/02/2012 09:51

I remember when I pg and they suspected GD the midwives put me on a sort of diabetic's diet, where there were sort of even proportions of carbs and protein etc. I actually started losing weight in the 7month of pg, while before that I was gaining a kilo a week.

So basically it was fine to have natural yoghurt and a bit of baguette (which is much better for you than sliced bread). OTOH having lots of fruit, or fruit on its own, was not allowed.

Don't eat lots of fruit-they have loads of sugar.

Re: getting used to eating healthier-it will take few days to get used to it and then when you'll start to see results, it will become easier. If you eat lots of salts and sugar (crisps, sweets) you get sort of addicted to it, so the first few days may be a bit hard. Just don't buy any of it.

Have some dark choc as a treat.

winnybella · 22/02/2012 09:54

So instead of loads of fruit, have no more than 2 a day plus avocado, small handfull of nuts, bit of proper bread (ie wholemeal, not crappy sliced white) etc and obv.loads of veg.

KinkyDorito · 22/02/2012 10:10

Join us on Paul Mckenna thread and be brainwashed into liking it. Grin

I am fruit and veg queen at the moment. Gillian McKeith would be proud.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/02/2012 10:20

Really shouldn't have posted in this section as I'm not losing weight or ever have, its just the title that caught my eye. Just wanted to post one last time in response to *winny".

"Don't eat lots of fruit-they have loads of sugar." I find this a really odd statement. I'm quite petite yet I eat loads of fruit. Have always loved it and would rather have fruit than chocolate, although I do eat chocolate too.

Telling someone who is asking for help to change over from crisps to fruit to "don't eat lots of fruit" sounds like really, really odd advice to me.

Racheybabez · 22/02/2012 10:34

find a nice yoghurt first low calories/fat and work into it i love strawberry mullerrice 107 calories less than crisps and from there once you have tricked your brain into think yoghurt is better you can then go to natural/greek whatever yoghurt is better

also fruit is definetly lower fat/calories than crisps so its a start in the right direction

willpower is need alot of it if your determind to change your eating habits

Mallinky · 22/02/2012 11:22

Just do it.
Although the thought of eating fruit cannot compare to the thought of the pleasure you may get from eating crisps, once you've eaten that apple and had a big glass of water, the craving for the crisps usually disappears.

PMTIsMe · 22/02/2012 11:28

Isn't the avoid too much fruit thing because there is alot of natural sugar in fruit? My mum is diabetic and cant have juice etc because its too sugary. I was under the impression that with regard to the 5 a day rule, its better to make that veg heavy rather than fruit heavy. On a related note, my DCs dentist hates the boys snacking on fruit and says it should be cheese/crackers etc because of the sugar. Fruit in moderation with meals he say. (Apols for slight hijack!)

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/02/2012 11:31

Surely though its better that the OP has an orange or pear etc rather than a bag of crisps? The crisps can't be doing her teeth much good either.

Ephiny · 22/02/2012 11:33

I do the Paul McKenna method too. So if I'm genuinely hungry, and I really fancy some crisps or a slice of toast, I have it, and eat it slowly and enjoy it. In the past I'd have made myself eat the fruit because it's 'good' and 'healthy', then had the crisps/toast anyway, and probably stuffed myself with everything in sight after that out of guilt and a feeling that I'd 'ruined' the day anyway so might as well.

If I'm not properly hungry, I don't have anything, not even fruit.

You don't have to eat lots of fruit if you don't like it. Do you have veg with your meals?

PMTIsMe · 22/02/2012 11:33

Eh? What would crisps do to your teeth? [confused emoticon]

ifancyashandy · 22/02/2012 11:38

Because the more you eat the healthier stuff, the more you end up re-educating your taste buds.

I lost 4 stone on WW (so no 'banned' foods). I like eating so would think 'do I really want to eat this piece of cheese / bar of chocolate / bag of crisps which will mean I've eaten all my points and thus can't eat anything else today or shall I eat this apple and then be able to have chicken, veg and new potatoes for dinner tonight' and I would choose the apple. Eventually, my taste buds changed and I no longer really like crisps / chocolate / cheese. I actually taste the fat and they taste 'claggy' and unappetising.

I guess it's the 'fake it till you make it' method!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/02/2012 11:39

Not an expert, got my info from QI Blush. Ask your Dentist next time you go Smile.

Ephiny · 22/02/2012 11:45

Agree with ifancyashandy - well, sort of. Part of the Paul McK thing is eating slowly and mindfully, and sometimes with foods like crisps, cheap chocolate etc, if you really pay attention to how they feel and taste in your mouth, you realise they're actually not that nice - there's a greasy feel and the flavour isn't really as nice as you thought it was.

So you could end up finding you prefer the fruit after all :)

theruby · 22/02/2012 14:50

thanks for all the response, I went from being 13st down to 8st 12lb I'm now about 9st11lb and its creeping up. I lost the weight with WW and to be honest its a rubbish long term solution but it got it off and now I want to eat an apple instead of watiz and actually like it.

every evening meal we have has peppers, mushrooms, onions and corgettes in it and tastes nice. its just in the day time and snacking. I'm trying to get back to pointing because it worked but I want to change my habbits to eating the better things for breakfast and lunch. cause at the moment I really eat far to many crisps and drink too much diet pesi.

I will look at Paul McK for inspiration, also crisps are really bad for your teeth because of the sugar and because corn snack ones stick to your teeth.

I snack on ham, tiny bits of cheese or crab sticks. I find these quite filling and not too 'moorish'

ifancyashandy · 22/02/2012 15:43

What about eating zero point foods as snacks? I eat gerkins, rice cakes, cherry toms, carrot sticks more gerkins etc.

But I've stayed counting points since I lost weight three years ago. Appreciate that might not work for all.

alessthandomesticgoddess · 22/02/2012 16:13

I'm going through the same problem but not with crisps, with chocolate. I drink sips of water between every bite to make me feel full and think about the 1lb weightloss.

Iced water increases your metabolism but room temperature water makes you feel full.

I also eat fruit in sections. I cut them up and eat them slowly which tricks my body into thinking it's getting more.

theruby · 22/02/2012 18:01

I'm a veggie, I used the old WW points system but when your counting 3 rice cakes are 1 point but a bag of watzits are 1.5 and french fries are 1point! so it not a great system for making healthy choices.

I think I need to just get rid of the junk and go cold turkey, I'm going to count points because its useful and we have a monthly food planner for evening meals but I think I need to do one for the day time too and plan my full days.

KinkyDorito · 22/02/2012 18:03

theruby I'm vege too, and combine Paul Mckenna with WW (not that you have to with him as he doesn't like diets) it's working well. Smile

alessthandomesticgoddess · 22/02/2012 18:32

I don't like point counting as I feel a lot of the choices aren't healthy. I count calories but make healthy choices within my calorie allowance

Trickle · 22/02/2012 18:46

I'd have some advice that's not very conventional BUT it works for me and my mum. Don't eat low fat - low fat makes you feel hungrier and makes your body take more from the food you've eaten becasue it was expecting more calories so assumes there is something wrong - same thing happens if you use sweetners. Full fat yogurt doesn't contain that much fat in terms of heart health and all those other healthy indicators and the fat will make you feel full and satisfied (this bit is a lot about portion control too though and Paul Mckenna is great for getting you to realise when you are full, hungry is easy, full and not just wanting to eat for pleasure/comfort is a whole other level of difficult ;) )

So I'd have natural unsweetened full fat yogurt (couple of dessert spoons) a piece of fruit and if I was extra hungry I'd add toasted flaked almonds (more fat and a some protien but they go further and you feel like you've had morethan if you used whole almonds).

eating like this, not being very mobile but doing quite a bit of swimming I've shocked my midwives by being lighter than I was when I started my last pregnancy :D

foreverondiet · 22/02/2012 20:36

Don't snack too much on fruit, lots of fruit sugar and not very conducive to losing weight. A couple of pieces a day enough if you want to lose weight (can eat a lot more than 2 pieces for maintenance) although I suppose relatively fruit better than chocolate or crisps.

I have been healthy eating for so long now that crisps just taste greasy and salty, and chocolate sickly sweet (love 85% choc though). I log everything I eat so I knew if I had the chocolate wouldn't be able to have any dinner and I'd be going to bed hungry!!!!

I snack on veg, wish I could stop - cherry tomatoes, sugar snap peas, mushrooms, carrots. Can't seem to help myself but all v low in calories.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 23/02/2012 09:18

Trickle I agree with you. I never eat anything low fat or low sugar.

Ephiny · 23/02/2012 10:43

Agree with Trickle too, I never eat low-fat cheese, yoghurts etc - for one thing they're never as nice or as filling, so you can easily end up eating more in an attempt to feel satisfied, or eating something else afterwards. Real foods, in small/moderate portions, is the way to go IMO.
